Whether it's worth it or not really depends more on you. Depending on what you enjoy about playing Hearthstone, it might be the right mode for you, or it might not.
I'll just tell you my own story, as it pretty much explains how I answered your question for myself:
I started playing Hearthstone shortly before it was announced that the game would be split into Standard and Wild ( December 30th 2015). When I read the announcement, I thought there's no way I'm ever gonna play Wild. I learned Hearthstone during the time of Face Hunter, Secret Paladin and Mech mage. I constantly saw all those GvG and Naxx cards that I didn't have, pretty much every other deck contained Piloted Shredder, Dr. Boom or Sludge Belcher. I just wanted Whispers of the Old Gods to come out, so I could be more on the same level as everyone else, because TGT sucked anyway. But when it was announced that old adventures wouldn't be available anymore after rotation, UNLESS you had at least the first wing, I felt like maybe I want to have those cards someday and didn't want to miss out.
After that, I pretty much ignored Wild completely for a long time. I might have tried it for a game or two, but I only really played Standard, because to me, Wild was still that place with all the cards I didn't have anyway. But then, 2017 had the first Hall of Fame rotation, and I had to say goodbye to one of my most favorite cards of all time, Azure Drake. Also, I liked playing Zoolock, and Power Overwhelming was going to leave, AND I had always hoped to finally get Ragnaros the Firelord from a pack, which also rotated. But since we were allowed to craft it for free then, this was the first time I thought that I might want to play Wild from time to time.
But the time I actually got into Wild was in mid/late 2018. I was disappointed that Boomsday Project had a pretty low impact, my favorite decks were either nerfed (first Spiteful Druid, then Token Taunt Druid) or not good enough anymore (Even Warlock), and Rastakhan's Rumble looked so weak I already knew I wouldn't buy many packs from it (and I didn't). So I had a lot of gold, I was tired of Standard and I was looking more and more into Wild decks, especially the somewhat obscure Big Deathrattle Control Shaman with Reincarnate. And then, after more than 2 years, I made the decision to extend my Wild collection, and bought the second wing of Naxxramas, and then a few more wings of LoE and Blackrock, and crafted a few commons from GvG. Early 2019, I played more Wild than Standard, and in March 2019, I bought the rest of Naxx and Blackrock just for completion's sake and realized that I just enjoyed the mode a lot more. I liked to try out decks I never got to play, I liked the variety in decks and strategies I played against, and it was just more interesting for me to see how I could improve old decks with new cards and vice versa. After Rise of Shadows, I mostly switched over to Wild, and now, I only play Standard for a bit when a new set comes out. For months, I'm on rank 20 in Standard, because I just don't care anymore. In hindsight, I'm so glad I bought that Naxx wing.
If any of what I wrote resonates with you, than you might want to give it a try. I think the biggest decision you have to make is whether you want to disenchant cards after rotation or keep them for Wild mode. Ultimately, Wild is just one click away, and you don't need a whole different collection to try it out. Some Standard decks work just fine, and several Wild decks are fairly cheap. Secret Mage is arguably the strongest deck in Wild right now, and it costs less than half of most current Standard decks.
At least for the option, to have that foot in the door as I did with that first Naxx wing, I would recommend you to keep most cards (not necessarily all of them) that will rotate in April this year. It's easier to make that step when you know you have some options besides your Standard collection. See for yourself what interests you more. If you like to see completely new decks and frequent meta changes, than you'll be happier if you stick with Standard. But if Wild is in any way interesting to you, you can't really go wrong with getting a few cards for it, or at least keep those you like, since they'll always be around.
Wild is all about ultra-optimazed decks, a LOT of cards was played in Standard never was played again after rotation because the power level to be included in lists is insane, what means aggro killing you in turn 4, control being extremely efficient in deny everything you try and combos finishing the game before you can get the 10 manas crystal.
If you have a deck can deal with all this and you like to play then go and don't look behind, in long run is much more cheap than Standard.
Personally I like Standard more but everytime things gets bad, like Shamanstone, my quest highlander mage is there to a break.
I mainly play wild, once in a while I play a bit of standart and I enjoy wild much more, why? Well in standart even at rank 25 everbody is playing the same shit.. Face Hunter, Zoo, Gala Rogue... Sure in wild it's the same thing from rank 3-legend (Secret Mage, Mech Pala, Cubelock or Mechalock) but at rank 5-4 it's a lot of meming and there is my joy.
If you want give it a try, go with mech Pala the deck is pretty cheap.
Dk if you like Reno decks, I love it, but a lot of them run the package of Reno + Emperor + Zola + Kazakus + Zilliax + Zephyrs
Wild is a blast (mostly). I made the switch a few seasons ago, now I love playing both formats. In Wild, sure there's still a lot of the same decks, but there is more variety and if you get a decent homebrewed deck, you can catch people off guard since there's such a larger pool to pull from and they can't anticipate what you are playing.
WIld, imo, is the best format in the game. I have the most fun on the Wild ladder between ranks 20-5. So much diversity. As others have mentioned there are many viable decks for each class so you can never really be too sure what you're going to come up against when you queue into a game. You'll see a ton of crazy home brew decks there as well.
The only downside is that it's not a cheap format at all. It's a big ask for new players to get a decent Wild collection together and keep up with the Standard meta. But if you have a good collection and have been playing for several years then you can't go wrong with Wild.
i'm exclusively a wild player and I would highly recommend u trying it out!
The only thing insufferable about wild is when u're up against res priest (arguably one of the most brain cell killing archtype to play) but they're not too common and suffer heavy against aggro. apart from that the meta is actually pretty decent
I love standard, I really do, but it is tiring since the limited card pool results in 2-3 overplayed decks.
Wild is rarely repetitive and always exciting, since everyone has access to the craziest, most broken builds out there... so long as you have the cards to build with.
I think depending on how committed you are to wild, you could invest a small amount of gold/dust/cash to cards and packs from the past, specifically cards that are useful year after year (Loatheb, Sylvanas, Ragnaros, etc.). As new sets come out, you can figure out your best course of spending your different currencies between standard and wild-only cards and packs.
Short version: wild is worth it if you're not going to change your mind about it in 6 months.

I would say competitive standard is superior to compettive wild - but casual wild is miles better than casual standard - and I don't mean actual 'casual mode', I mean just staying in the lower ranks and playing decks you built yourself or stuff that is fun, rather than a meta deck you copied. There is also much more potetional in wild to take one of these self made decks and climb with it if that is what you want to do.
Honestly though, in terms of gameplay both modes are inferrior to both arena and battlegrounds IMO. BGs make constructed play feel so goddam slow these days.
Yeah I find Wild a lot of fun and I bounce between both formats depending on which I'm enjoying more or am less frustrated by at the time. In terms of investment into the game Wild is a better deal because you're not constantly shelling out cash to stay competitive since the meta game develops slower in Wild. Having to dust you cards at each rotation for 1/4 value, then dust again next year at 1/4 value is gross.
I switched to playing wild only when it first came out aka got separated from "standard". Its much better mode than stale standard, and it will always be. On the other hand if you like grinding and playing same neutral cards with different classes then standard is your cup of tea.
Ive said this 1 billion times. the 2 modes we have r like all or nothing. we need a mode that rotates monthly with like classic, basic + 6 random sets... that would b great!
