This is the 2nd time I feel this way, been playing since beta. There are by far too many legendaries and epics required to get a decent deck in order to be able to keep up with the meta.
I've been kicked around by a bunch of free to play decks that work to this day. I also know how it feels since i've only pre-ordered 2 expansions and the rest I simply winged it with gold. Try some of the free to play decks on hearthpwn, they aren't as magnificent or cool looking as top tier decks you'll run into, but they work.
I've refused to buy packs for this expansion. Blizzard's behavior regarding the Blitzchung suspension can only be addressed by hurting their bottom line. So, I feel your pain; I can't build a good deck either, even after plunking down 3800 in-game gold.
But even when I purchased a pre-order for past expansions, of 40 or 50 packs, I still couldn't construct a good deck. I think the real problem is that Blizzard simply doesn't provide good value per pack. Another reason not to put down hard money.
The price of trying to have all Hearthstone decks is insanely high, either in terms of time (grinding) or money. It is simply not worth it. There are so many other games around, Hearthstone is not worth taking too seriously, in my opinion. After the first 2 weeks of an expansion, things get boring anyway.
The best way to approach Hearthstone, in my opinion, is to only play for fun (never grind for gold), never buy packs, and play what you open. Plus craft a few things, whilst being stingy with your dust. You have to be selective.
My best opening so far, (I got 4 legendaries), however It isn't enough
I mean, I got Alextrasa which is sweet, but the other are for classes I can't afford to play (because It would mean crafting at least other 2/3 legendaries)
Dusting them isn't smart, though, cause from 3 legendaries I couldn't even afford crafting one..
However I manager to craft a whole Big Spell mage, back in the days, with Alanna and so on (It was the most expensive deck at the time) and during last expension I had to pick affordable decks over the crazy ones that I May have enjoyed more (Highlander Mage, for example)
Although I crafted a wonderful Anka-Sari Highlander rogue which was a ton of fun
I think (and this is my personal opinion) that people get wayyyy too focused on trying to "Collect them all". Im not a F2P'er but I don't typically spend much on the game. I will typically do the cheaper pre-order bonus (which is like 30-50) and thats every 4 months. To me this is a pretty small price to pay really for a game I consistently enjoy.
I mean otherwise lets pretend I wanted to play a game all year, most games these days do not have as much replayability. So it wouldn't be crazy for some people to buy 3-4 games a year. To me this is similar to buying a cheaper game every 4 months and honestly it feels completely reasonable.
At the same time I came from the MtG days from long ago which as anyone can tell you is INSANELY expensive to keep up with. Sure you have physical cards you can sell for money but that's also a gamble too (And when you factor in what you spent....you really aren't making that much).
Typically with me doing my Daily quests and doing a pre-order bonus im able to build about 3-4 meta decks. If I don't have a legendary I don't sweat it because honestly most meta decks do JUST fine without ALL the legendaries. Most really only have 1 or 2 core ones. With Galakrond being free that's even easier.
For instance my Treat druid deck I've done well with only has 2 legendaries and honestly Cenarius could be ditched easily. Taking a look at a quest Shaman Galakrond deck for instance: https://www.hearthstonetopdecks.com/decks/galakrond-quest-high-winrate/ You could easily remove Nithogg and even Kronx Dragonhoof (Believe it or not people are finding him to be not as good). That leaves you with your free Galakrond card and your 1 legendary quest card and 2 epic cards (Which could honestly be replaced easily).
Doing this I feel like most people can achieve many meta decks. Yeah some decks are SUPER expensive but there are always versions that can be made that have only a SLIGHT less win-rate. I think the key is to understanding that you don't need to have every card or be able to play every single deck out there. I feel like I play at least the vast majority doing it this way though.
I know a common argument is "You should be able to have every card with what you spend", and I sort of understand where people come from. But in reality blizzard does give out tons of free packs and if you save your gold per each expansion you can get enough to play by saving gold and buying smart to play a lot of meta decks out there for free!. Thats just my 2c.
Why shouldn't it be more of a grind as f2p? If it was easy and everyone did it then there wouldn't be a game.
You realise this game costs money yeah? To develop, maintain etc, they have to make money.
Be glad that there's an awful lot you can do as f2p, there are plenty of budget decks that do a very good job and multiple content creators make play lists specifically for these decks.
Yes, if you want all the best cards and multiple, competitive decks you'll need to put some money in (there are those who manage not to but I'd think they're more the exception rather than the rule) and my question to all free players on Amy game is 'why shouldn't you have to?'
No issue with people being f2p on things but at least be grateful man. Other people keep these things going for you and you expect to have the same access as them?

Right but if everyone did that you wouldn't have the game at all. I know people like to piss and moan about it but I'm sure a large portion of that crowd would be really disappointed if the game shut down. You're quite literally encouraging people to think the best way to play the game is a way which means it can't survive. Fair enough of you play for 2 weeks every 3 months but that simply doesn't represent the majority of the community.
I'm f2p since I started playing in 2014 and I've always been able to play any relevant meta-deck. I rarely play more than 30 mins a day and yet can open about 100 packs on every release day (which usually is enough to get all rares and most epics). I must be doing something wrong.
btw: if you do the math you'd realise that you can complete the shittiest daily quests and never win a single game and you'd still be guaranteed gold worth 60 packs on release day. And that doesn't even include all the free extra packs and quests and what not we get throughout the year. Add that too and play like 15 mins a day and you're probably at 80 packs already, which imho should be well enough to be able to play at least 75% of the meta decks.
I have a $5-to-play account (only $5 spent on the Welcome Bundle two years ago). I recently switched to laddering in Wild on that account, partly because of the cost. I ladder in Standard on my main account for which I buy the pre-order.
I could certainly afford some Standard-viable decks on my $5TP account. I keep up with my quests, play Arena, and receive the freebies, so I have a good amount of dust. The problem with Standard ladder is variety. At least three of the classes are unplayable on ladder at any one time, and usually four. That's not the case in Wild.
As FTP, you are very constrained as to what you can play on Standard ladder. Wild is easier in the long run for cost and variety, especially if you were able to buy the adventures with gold.
It's not so hard nowadays. You just play aggro. One similarity that most of the shiny legendaries have in common is they are late game greedy cards. You dont actually need them and often they dont even help very much. On the other hand building a modest deck of scrappy low cost creatures tends to be more consistent and especially right now when very few ppl know what the hell to do with said legendaries you can climb yourself up high.
Don't forget, valiant serf, thine goal is to hit RANK 5 every month (to get that spicy golden Epic card you can sell to fuel your collection) not to make a deck with 10+ legendaries in it (which even us whales usually lose with...)

How do you feel about it ?
Yes you absolutely can.
The prize ? Only your Life.

You're pretty much limited to a few classes that you want to play, but I think if you play regularly it's doable.
Yeah, that's the way you're intended to feel. They want to pressure you into buying packs.
And if you value your time and want to play a wide range of decks... buying is actually more cost effective than subsisting as F2P.

Doesn’t Whizbang solve that?
Spend wisely your resources and focus in one class, maybe two, this way you can play competitive without spend money.
But if you like variety and try many classes you have to spend money or much time in the game.
As a f2p I opened 43 packs

This shit again -.- we get one of these ''impossible to be F2P despite proven otherwise many times before'' threads every day.
9 legendaries from 161 packs (one being a golden Ancharrr).
1 legendary from the pre-order (golden Dragonqueen Alexstrasza).
31 epics (28 after disenchant).
5165 dust + 1700 after disenchanting some golden cards (i don't care for golden cards) .
And it will be worse with the upcoming 35 cards from the adventures in January.
LMAO
I feel that for over 2 years.
