It's pretty much universal that the more popular a game is, the more toxic its community becomes.
Smaller communities are great at self-policing -- either correcting the behavior of bad actors or driving them away. But that grows exponentially more difficult as you add more and more people to the mix.

I feel like you just aren't hearing what I'm saying, and just keep repeating the same thing. I never said it's assholes all the way down. Please take a deep breath and know I'm not talking about you. I am simply expressing the simple observation that the toxicity of the community seems to have greatly increased in the past years. I've been back at it for only a month or so, but the sheer number of people spamming threaten, roping me all game, etc. has skyrocketed. I'm not trying to offend you, I'm just curious who else feels this way. I understand that you don't feel this way. Thank you for your input.
No Paabo, it didn't "skyrocketed", it's just you, and that is what I'm trying to tell you: it's still a minority. Sorry for not being 100% clear, english is not my first language, :)
I'd say 2/3 of the friend requests are for trolling and 1/3 are to make friends.
If you have a thin skin, you should never respond to a friend request. Otherwise, there is an entertainment value to accepting salty friend requests, double if you engage in "cross-trolling".
I always accept requests because have only two possible outcomes:
1- The request is from an asshole don't know losing and try to do with empty words what they can't do in the game, just ignore.
2- The request is from a person who want to comment something interesting about the match and in the future can result in an invite to 80g quest, a godsend feature for people like me who don't spend real money to get the cards.
The benefits trumps the downsides.
