I usually do two things to people I haven't squelched who decide they need to contact me with some truly original slur or threat:
1.) Unbearably nice. I congratulate them and completely ignore whatever garbage they're trying to bury me in. I actually befriended a guy once who couldn't believe I wasn't retaliating. He got mad, then madder, then asked what my deal was and we added each other permanently. Turns out, he had a really awful day at work and me beating him just sent him. Sometimes, people are just having a bad day and deal with it poorly.
2.) Try to keep them going for as long as possible. Salt adds have a hilarious way of devolving from a quick hateful message to a frustrated torrent of copy-paste accusations and mockeries, because the anger only fuels so much banter before they stop responding, at which point you have burned them out. "Wow great job top decking," and some horrible thing about my mother and a group of young gentlemen, and I just respond with "yeah but I won" or "oh sorry didn't even notice I won, I was playing two games of chess and solving an advanced physics equation. Hearthstone is just how I kill time. I don't even know what the names of the cards are sometimes!"
My favorite was the player who threatened to get me banned for beating them in a brawl.

I really enjoy accepting friend requests because I turn their anger and frustration into something fun for me. I act as it were true what they are saying and mocking them. For example, someone said sarcastically how did I learn to play such straightforward deck (don't remember what deck I was playing) and I replied with "I went in a special school where only winners like me are allowed and losers like you aren't" and the person cracked. I don't let anything ruin my day and mood, especially people who are crybabies when they lose a game.
Sometimes, people are just having a bad day and deal with it poorly.
People who usually treat others badly just because they had a bad day are not worth my time, neither should yours. ;)
Those who can't usually control their negative emotions towards others are the worst and the most dangerous.
Does trolling others count as mistreatment though?
#askthechaosgod
Yes, it counts. But I always did it on purpose and totally aware of the consequences, which allowed me to never cross the line and never make others feel really bad. At least that's what I believe... :P
Just yesterday, I met someone who sent me a "friend" request after he (I just assume it was a guy) lost a match, and I thought hey, why not see if it's someone nice.
Of course it wasn't. After some insults, he asked me whether I have anything to say for myself. While he was waiting for my great retort, I filed a report for harrassment and then blocked him with no comment. Normally, I simply ignore friend requests. This guy, the first after a dozen or so, had the chance to convince me that the Hearthstone community is not full of hyperaggressive man-children, and he blew it.
I assume nothing will happen to him. But maybe, just maybe, that guy receives a message someday that his account was temporarily or even permanently banned. Maybe I wasn't the first one to report him, maybe I won't be the last one. I'll just hope that someday, he gets what he deserves. And from now on, that is the only response I will ever give to such people.
I won't go report someone who parks in the wrong place just for the sake of it. Neither would I sue someone for trivial reasons, even if I could. But I have little to no tolerance for someone outright assaulting others, even if verbally, and I certainly had enough of it when playing Hearthstone. There is criticism, there's parody, there's humorous insults, and then there's people who just lash out at others with no respect or a sense of decency.
This is not the schoolyard where we fight it mano a mano, and only "girls" will go scream for the teacher. I mean, even in school that attitude was wrong, but if you are online, I have to assume you are an adult or at least mature enough to know better. And if you know no other way to deal with your frustration than assaults and hatespeech, it's your problem, not mine. I don't have to come up with a response, because I don't need to tolerate this shit.
This guy, with this behaviour, simply has no place here, no matter how commonplace such behaviour sadly is nowadays, especially in the Hearthstone community. As Argent Protector says: "Not on my watch!"

Agreed! I just can't determine that from one interaction, so I base it off my on mood and actions. I generally ignore it and squelch emotes from chatty players, but when I don't and I accept a request and they get ugly, I try to kill em with kindness. Most often they shoot their one line of hate and unfriend me, and it doesn't bother me to dig in with kindness and see where it goes.
Now if this were some repeat offender? I wouldn't even bother.

Cool, i don't have to change my alligment from chaotic evil to chaotic neutral now.

LOL... XD XD XD
Note: Don't worry jainaishot, I neither changed my alligment :P, and I'm not going to attack others for doing the same I used to do, I'm not hypocritical. I just wanna see my beloved community happy and I'm going to try to encourage others who have a similar purpose from now on, instead of trying to have fun all the time, hehe. XD I hope others do the same too. :)

You know, that is kinda trollish, and I love to do it too!!! :) As long as someone is trolling for a greater good, I'm perfectly fine with it, hehe. ;)

Ehem... Yeah, you aren't supposed to reveal my real intentions here, my dear right-hand man... You should have sent me a private message, for f..k's sake!!! >:-(
This is not the schoolyard where we fight it mano a mano, and only "girls" will go scream for the teacher.
I always saw such a thing as one of the dumbest rules ever, a rule "kinda imposed" by the dumbest part of our society to kids and teenagers (and to adults to some extent). The concept of fairness in a fight, except during most sports events, is retarded for me to say the least. Of course, I don't like either when, in Hearthstone, Uther says: "I will fight with honor!", one of the most cliché and silly quotes in the entire game. C'mon Uther, are you seriously going to put at risk your life, the most precious thing you have and something no one can give you back (well, at least in real life :P), while limiting your actions just for something you believe makes you better than others (honor in this case)??? Are you really that stupid, hehe??? Of course, he is not, and everyone knows he is full of shit, but my point still stands... XD XD XD

Certainly a change of tune from your first comment of "C'mon, dude, as you said this is pretty pointless, chances that you will interact more than once with the same individual while playing Hearthstone in your entire life are very, very low (sometimes happens, but it's not the norm). If you were being bullied by, let's say, your classmates or co-workers in real life I would gladly help you, but this is not the case."

Well, I forgot to mention that is usually how I handle things in real life (and fortunately many people out there do the same) and not in Hearthstone... You know, it's usually easier and much more safe to act nicely, but at the same time a bit trollish, with annoying people to avoid bigger problems. ;)
I'm just a common person with fears and doubts like anyone else, and it's not my intention, neither I care, to appear to be something else here, as some try in vain. ;)
I always always ALWAYS accept these requests when they come in after a game. 1 out of 10 is a nice guy who wanted to say good game, ask me about my deck ,etc.
When they come in hot and salty, though (yes, read that just like you imagined it), I always reply with:
I'll give them a spoiler from a recent movie or something if I can think of something recent :p Usually I just report them without saying anything; if they're on your friends list, ironically, that is the only time you can report someone.
