I'm a returning player and started with a brand new **free** HS account (like don't even have all the basic class cards yet) and wanted to know people's thoughts on the best way to:
build my collection
farm gold
farm dust
I've played a lot of HS back from the golden age of Dr.7 up until the dreaded Jade Idol was born but I was never good at farming gold & dust. Since then HS seems to have some new changes and I want to know how to be efficiently growing my card collection. Also which legendary would YOU craft first?
Do rank 50-25 for free stuff. Do single player modes for free stuff. Purchase welcome bundle if that's still a thing. Purchase other bundles that offer bulk packs for cheap. Complete daily quests. Hit 100 gold per day from getting wins. Play ranked and try to hit at least Rank 5 each season to get a golden epic that you can keep or DE for 400 dust. I think sometimes tavern brawl offers rewards? (never done it).

Tavern Brawls always offer a pack as reward (but more with some).

This is the best advice, and most cohesive.
As for the first legendary to craft, it depends on your playstyle. If you like Aggro, Leeroy Jenkins is always a must-have. If you like slower decks, Zilliax is a very safe craft. If you like the Highlander decks, Zephrys the Great is your best bet. All of these Legendaries are incredibly strong.

Play Arena. It's the fastest way to get gold and dust without having a huge collection. Requires some skill though, so that you get 5+ wins each run on average.
Farm ranked play with a cheap tempo rogue deck (rogue is always pretty much the same deck for years so if you have classic rogue cards you can build a deck from it). Once you feel comfortable enough with that deck (reaching rank 10 or 5) you can start spamming arena : it's the most effective way to get gold and dust. Rogue is the best class and fairly easy to play if you get notions of tempo and hero power's dagger uses.
Not too hard to get 5/6 wins even with a bad deck. Use hearth arena to draft your deck if you're not good at it at first, they're not always right about the best pick but they can build good enough rogue decks !
go to the wild section of of the hearthstone shop on bnet and claim the knights of the frozen throne adventure for free, prologue rewards one of the 9 death knight hero cards which u can dust for 400 if u dont plan on playing wild and 3 packs i believe from doing the actual adventure which if ur lucky could yield u the guaranteed first 10 packs legendary
Where can I play "wild"? I don't currently see that mode- does it have to be unlocked somehow? All I can do is -Play- and then it's -Ranked-
Wild becomes available when you acquire your first Wild-only card, by any means. If you don't want to spend money or dust, you will have to spend some gold on at least one Year of the Raven pack and wait for those cards to rotate out of Standard. (next april)

you have to play a tavern brawl where some wild cards are played, like the current one, you just have to see your opponent playing a wild card then you'll be able to craft one in your collection and unlock the wild mode

You have to craft/unlock at least one wild only card. Any card from the sets Gobilins Vs. Gnomes all the way up to Kobolds and Catacombs, or one of the adventures like Nax or Blackrock. But I think all you need is ONE wild card unlocked in order to play wild format.
You can farm gold and dust easily enough by questing and ranking, the problem is TIME. If you want to strictly be a "f2p" player, it is easy enough to do so, but be prepared for the grind. It takes a while to get the necessary 100 gold per day alone if farming's the method you want to use. Not to mention ranking can be a nightmare if your budget decks can't compete with control warrior or combo priest. As of now those two are the meta decks dominating ranked from what I'm told, at least until the nerfs hit. Once the nerfs hit though it may just be a whole new ball game.
That said I'd be a bit cautious with spending dust to craft things at the moment...with the nerf bat about to swing down you don't know which cards for sure are on the chopping block. If you're a new/returning player for the game Id wait until sunday before you start going ham bone with crafting cards with dust, by that time the nerf announcements should come.
All good advice but would like to add my own insight from years of playing. Especially if you are going to stay Free 2 Play.
Trump (not the president) has some good videos out there on Free 2 Play accounts.
1. Don't try to build 1 deck for each of the 9 classes. Stick with 1 or 2 classes at best and work on getting them in a playable and winning state.
2. Don't craft class legendary cards UNLESS you intend to always play that class. Start with Neutral minions first.
3. Play Daily Quests, Play Single Player content and Play Tavern Brawls. These are easy to do and most of the single player stuff is initially free. Extra wings might cost you gold.
4. Stick with Standard at first. Wild is a bit overwhelming and your decks will not fare so well against the really good decks out there. Also, Play Arena a few times. It allows you to play with cards you don't own and get a feel for the cards and if you would want to craft them later.
5. Don't craft cards or build decks based on the 'flavor of the week'. Don't fall into the trap of investing your dust and gold into a deck that might be very terrible and requires EPICs and RAREs you will never play in another other deck.
6. Add friends so you take advantage of the Play a Friend quest. You both get 80 gold. Also adding friends allows you to watch them for Spectate a Friend quest when they win, you get a pack.
