You know, or they are telling you that you played well.
Your name tells me you're part of the problem. I could be wrong but, I'm guessing i'm right. Saying "well played" is FINE if it was a hard fought game for both players and it was tooth and nail the whole way. But when you have 2 health and your opponent has 20+ health and you have no way to win it and they KNOW it. Then saying well played isn't what you imply to be a good sport. It's to mock. Pretty simple really.
It's all about how and when it's used. Even on a non verbal level you can tell why something is being done and with what intent (to a certain extent).
Or it's my Warcraft character that's a Troll Engineer. I think you're just hyper sensitive and taking a simple emote personally because you lost.
I say well played every single game. EVERY SINGLE GAME. If my opponent plays well, I say "well played". If they play poorly, I say "well played". If my opponent let the rope burn every turn and never actually made a play, I say "well played". If my opponent is playing shaman and clearly isn't even another human being, I wish that bot an equally mechanical "well played".
For me it has nothing to do with good sportsmanship, yet still as nothing to do with poor sportsmanship. It's just habit, plain and simple. I think this is probably true for most people.
The emote that I personally find very frustrating is "Greetings". Whenever I start a game and hear "Well met!" I cringe. What a self-righteous prick. I find it highly unlikely that the opponent is actually glad to meet me, especially given that he hasn't truly met me at all. And "The pleasure is mine" is especially rude, especially if it's the first emote of the game. "The pleasure is mine" is something one would typically say in response to a greeting. I haven't even greeted the person and I hear "The pleasure is mine". They are clearly just mocking me. How condescending can HS players be? Jeez.
I could kind of see adhering to 7 if you have the self-discipline (I do not). I've noticed if I get roped, spam emoted etc.. I have a greater chance of going into the next game salty, and thus am more likely to do the same to my opponent. A vicious cycle of saltiness ensues.
I think that there are two things that mostly contribute to a lot more perception of BM than there actually is.
"I hate when someone draws out the kill turn". Why do you not concede? "Because they might make a mistake". Do you not see how that's BM in itself? Are you the same person who keeps playing in Monopoly when there is no way for you to win? When an opponent has obvious lethal showing and you pass the turn to him, you're basically saying to that person that you think they could screw that up.
Or as others have said, missions and stuff.
The other one is
"Why do people say Well Played when it's a lopsided game?" Because it's the "polite" thing to do. It's the high school sports extend the hand, make nice to the other team no matter what the score was. There is NO reason to assume that they are mocking you.
I hardly concede. I usually let them finish me. By doing this , you can learn more. Every turn is a learning experience and knowing what they had back is important to know how far behind you were and maybe can help you make an adjustment to your deck. I will usually concede to hunters and zoo when I'm certain they have lethal, because let's face it, they are all identical. Nothing to learn from watching their last play.
I usually say Hello at the start of a match and Well played at the end of the match, before or after lethal. I don't do it to mock people, it's for sportsmanship. If someone BM's me during matches, I don't usually care, the game is too situational to take it personal. I just think, if they only knew this terrible mulligan I got.
Emotes don't bother me, the most annoying thing that bothers me is when people say sorry all the time and that's just cause I get annoyed with weakness. I do like pointing out peoples mistakes with a "not quite what was planned' woops" that's probably the only time I have BM. I find that when I do this, it helps that player move along. Usually when someone makes a mistake, they let the rope burn insted of just saying, woops that was a mistake, and finish their turn.
When you are about to lose a game and you know it and your opponent knows it. And they say "well Played" am I the only one that finds that horribly mockitive and condescending? I mean why ever have emotes. It seems more trollish then anything
Also when someone has lethal instead of just attacking and ending it, they flex up by playing everything in their hand just to show how much overkill they have? No one cares? Am I the only one?
This thread is really good, I'm glad you posted it.
In my mind it's kind of rude to assume your opponent will make a mistake and not just concede when you know you've lost. Sure at tournament level people still screw up but we can save a lot of each others time by not carrying on. I usually do pass the turn to let my opponent see his next draw and will draw as much as I can myself to see what else was coming up so as to get a better handle on my deck.
"well played" before lethal is BM, After lethal it is sportsmanship. If you steamrolled your opponent, dont say well played, because they didnt. Saying well played when your opponent didnt play well is BM (unless it is after lethal, then it is just GG or something. a game could be good even though the opponent played bad.)
This is silly. I always say well played, and it's always immediately before I start dragging my cursor. Because I'm a bad sport? No, because that makes the most sense logistically.
I sometimes even "well played" at the end of my opponents turn if they don't do anything to prevent me from winning. Because I'm a bad sport? No, because I want to give them ample opportunity to concede, rather than forcing me to swing in with 7 minions.
The ONLY time "well played" should be construed as bad sportsmanship is when it follows a play that was obviously poor/a mistake.
Coin, pass? That probably wasn't intentional, and if the opponent says "well played", they are doing it to be rude.
Save that scenario and similar ones, you should always assume that "well played" is equivalent to "gg".
I think it's pretty amazing that we can have this topic at all, bodes very well for this community. In a world riddled with prepubescent and/or mentally challenged psychopaths, this is really a fresh breath of air.
I vaguely remember a unscientific study where it was stated the more moves you make the more xp or whatever your character gets, so the more moves you take before you end the game the better? was this proven wrong? because i do that sometimes where i dump my hand before taking the kill shot.

I don't condone Necro-ing but surely this can't be a true? A win is a win, isn't it?

I bm the living shit out of hunters since I usually main handlock, besides that anyone that bms me but loses gets bm'd hard.
