I recently posted about Token Druid and how I reached rank 6 on RoS day 2. The push from 18 to 6 involved a lot of gaming, so yesterday I took a break from Hearthstone. Well, I'm finding the climb much harder now. Came back today, and I'm finding myself winning and losing about as much as each other. I guess a 50% win rate isn't bad, but my eyes are set on rank 5 and every loss is frustrating me. At rank 6 I am consistently guessing, and dreading, the exact card in my opponent's hand to counter everything I do. I'll shut up on that; this is not a salt mine.
What I'm curious of, is for those currently at rank 5 or better, do you find you need to make considerable changes to your decks in order to keep winning? Or is it simply a rough grind of persistence? I understand folks on the higher rungs have better decks, and are better players, I'm just seeking some direction and motivation to hit rank 5.
At the moment I keep drowning to 7, surfacing to 6, then back to 7. Having a hard time keeping up above 6 (am back there again now--0 stars!) and feel I lose easy once things seem to start going well. I probably suffer a little tilt, too. Regardless, I'm pretty chuffed at reaching rank 6 this month. It is my best so far. Rank 5 is just so close, yet so far!
Any advice for that final push (to 5, I don't think I have the fortitude for Legend!) would be highly appreciated.
I wouldn't worry about making "tech" changes to your deck at such low ranks because the meta is more volatile. Deck refinements, however are always welcome this early into the expansion
Like climbing at any point in the ladder, either play really good decks or ones you really enjoy. Good decks will get you to the goal fast. Enjoyable decks will motivate you to play more. 50% winrate isn't good, but you'll reach rank 5 eventually due to win streaks
If you want to reach legend, you'll need a better winrate than 50% though. Contrary to popular sentiment however, reaching legend from 5 is NOT a grind. You can reach legend in under 100 games easily if you play good decks and play well. It's only a grind if you're playing poorly or playing meme/f2p decks
Stick with what got you there. Don't change a thing. Go back and look at who you're losing to and try to adjust your mulligan accordingly. Keep pushing, people at rank 5 tend to play around with meme decks. It's easy once you're on the last star. If you've been winning games consistently then you'll eventually push past it.
Consistent Rank 4ish here. I always push hard with an aggro deck during the first week of every season (this month it was Odd Mage). My best advice would be the following:
1. Pick a deck with faster games. Not necessarily a pure aggro deck, but if you're looking to make the grind shorter I'd avoid things like control warrior.
2. Once you've picked that deck, stick to it. You're going to get frustrated when you face several counters in a row, and that's fine. You'll learn how to play better in those matchups in the future.
3. Stay positive. At the end of the day, it's just a game. Whether or not you beat someone in a video game shouldn't determine your mood.
Cheers for the input, NightCrawl3r. Always appreciate your advice.
Fun versus effective, that's a good point. I think the token druid is a bit of both: good and fun. I probably just need to work on my playstyle. I am quite aggressive, and this can really screw me up. Last game I played saw me play Wispering Woods for 7 minions on turn 4 against hunter, and I thought 'I bet he has Unleash the Hounds and Scavenging Hyena'. He did. I Wispering Woods again. He Unleash the Hounds again.
Maybe that was just lucky for my opponent. Maybe I was stupid building a board of 1/1s while he had the hyena out. I keep seeing most my matchups, at rank 6, play out similar to this. Things seem to feel more normal when I fall back to 7. Could be all in the head.

Cheers bud. I think I've been mulliganing a bit hard lately. Like dropping everything if nothing is what I want (Wispering Woods and Acornbearer). I do hold swipe if I'm up against shaman or rogue, assuming an aggro setup.

That's some good points. I generally steer clear of heavy control decks. I definitely feel I've been piloting this deck better the more I use it. Had the same feel with Odd Paladin (when I previously hit rank 8). I think I do need to find a way to be persistent, and positive, even when running a string of losses. Right now I feel too scared to play as I don't want to go back to rank 7. Stupid, hey!
Your final point is a really good one. One I should definitely keep fresh in my mind right now. I think I might be taking this a little too seriously right now. I mean, I have nothing riding on it, other than the fact it will improve my PB and a golden epic. Certainly not worth getting cranky over.
Up to rank 4 it is pretty easy... But rank 3 to rank 1 is cutthroat... I wouldn't recommend changing deck though. Maybe swap couple of tech choices based on meta, but that ia about it... For me it is usually just lots of grinding... But also getting better at game as i go, learn from my mistakes, determining best plays in various situationz remembering how every match up plays out and playing towards that... Also knowing the meta helps. Like i already know the gist of top 10 archetypes in current meta...
My recommendation is not trying to add tech cards against the matches you always lose, try to teach against the close matches that you have, those close to 50% wr should be your objective when adding tech cards. If most of the decks you play against are a bad match up for your deck, and this cannot been solved with a few tech I highly advise you to change your deck.
