I really want to know what I have to do to become even a semblance of decent at this game. Perhaps someone can "spar" with me and tell me if I am just misplaying constantly. I was really hyped about the new expansion and especially things to come, but I can't say I find any of the decks swarming ladder right now to be super fun or anything.
Watch videos, there are a lot of streamers out there that post videos to youTube for the sole purpose of educating and helping others. Don't just watch streamers who play. Watch those who talk out each turn, and you will learn from them. Take your time between each play. Think about what your opponent is going to play after you. Know your win condition and your opponent's win condition.
Play A LOT. You have to commit to playing to get better. Also, install a deck tracker and re-watch your games. Analyze how you could have played better.
It takes time so don't give up! But, if you aren't having fun, it's not worth the effort! Have FUN!!!!
if you are not aiming to be hyper competitive dont sweat over it.
What matters is your having fun and playing the game.
IF you do want to improve there is MANY youtubers out there that can help. Regiskilbin has alot of great tools, helpful and good time on his twitch streams. Brian Kibler is also a good suggestion.
Watching Kripp or Kibler play on Twitch/Youtube has definately helped me get better at playing Hearthstone.
I'm not OP, but I'm struggling to become a better player, too. Interestingly, when if I watch the streams I can predict the good plays quite well. I think to myself: "Ok, in this situation I would play this and this" and the streamer makes the plays. But when I'm playing myself, I don't find any good play...

This is deck building problem... Remove cards which sit in your hand because they are bad plays and add some which would be good plays in those situation... Kibler spends hours refining his "fun" decks...
I just feel like I'm always stuck in super low ranking 20-15 , I want to climb higher, but is seriously feels abysmal sometimes. My issue is I want to play decks, that in my opinion, are more fun than competitive yet you'll go nowhere playing a fun deck. I had the same issue in Magic the Gathering as well actually haha I would ask friends online what they thought of a specific card or deck idea and I would always get "that isn't competitive" . So yeah I've definitely always like fringe deck ideas. But, what are some good decks for climbing right now? I have tried Murloc Shaman but...that is way too boring/linear. I enjoyed playing Dragon Paladin but you definitely get stomped every two games you win one. I tried bomb warrior once and somewhat stale seeing literally everyone else use it. I keep hearing bomb warrior is decent for ladder tho.

I used to have exact the same problem. Now i can be anywhere between rank 20 and legend. What made the difference for me?
The time i spent playing in a season or expansion. Once i have a deck that is strong, its not so much about my deck, but about knowing what im facing. Especially at lower ranks you dont meet a big variety, so once you see a class, you know what deck you are facing. Then its all about the mulligan and avoiding the worst scenarios:)
Like atm im at rank 8 and its already hard since i didnt care about the new cards and while i know my gameplan, i have no idea what im facing and i get constantly surprised.

In particular in the beginning of a new expansion when the meta is forming, linear and straightforward decks a generally the best to climb. The wincondition is quite clear, the good curve is easier to refine since you only have to watch your proactive gameplan. Good 1-drops, 2-drops and 3-drops, a few 4-drops, curve toppers like Leeroy Jenkins and synergistic cards and voilá, you have a decent aggro deck when the control variants are not yet refined. Additionally, linear and quick decks make you rank up quicker as well since the amount of games you are playing in the same time is higher than with combo or control decks. I made a druid token deck with Keeper Stalladris , lots of smaller minions, buffs and Soul of the Forest that had decent success. But I must admit that I presently still play mainly magic so I do not have a very large sample size of played games.
If you insist on playing whacky decks with interesting cards on top of you playing suboptimal (what you stated, not I), you just have to accept staying in low skill ranks. If you want to climb, you need to get better or play better decks. My advice: Play good decks and you will automatically also get better. After that you will be playing your own decks better as well. BUT: If you want fun and playing linear decks is boring for you, then keep on playing your fun decks and try to not bother about losing.
If you want to have fun then just play and have fun. If you want to climb, then watch a streamer play ONE deck against other meta decks and take note of their mulligans against specific classes and how and when they use specific cards and combos.
Also, play with one of your friends that is a higher rank then you and have him watch you and analyze your play.

Yeah, I don't really have any friends who play Hearthstone, so that one isn't really possible currently. :^(
Watch streamers like Kibler, Trump, Disguised Toast, and Thijs.
As they play, pause the video and think to yourself what you would play, if you were them. Then, watch what they do and listen to WHY they did what they did. You can learn a lot about the mechanics of the game, and how to "think around corners", by benefiting from their experience and explanations.

It is known as Spectator-Knowledge. While you are watching, you put yourself and your body in stress, because you want to win and try to do your best to achieve a win. It is stressful. - When you are just watchin, you don't act for sth, so you are more relaxed and can come to better analyses of the game, because you aren't handling.
I experienced this in the game of go, when i played in tourneys more years ago.
I found myself in the same boat and came up with a decent solution for me. I always have a laddering deck and a bunch of fun decks. The competitive one is the best performing deck I can put together with my collection without regard to the fun factor or if it is considered 'cancer' or 'brainless'. I give myself a (small) goal for the day, either games played, ranks earned, wins, or some such and play to achieve that goal. Then I go have fun with everything else. Usually I play these games in casual or wild ladder, where I am in the teens, but if I'm at a rank floor I'll play standard ladder. Some days I have no patience for the ranked deck and only play my enjoyable ones. I've only ever gotten to rank seven playing this way, but I enjoy a large percentage of the time I spend playing .
Watch the pro players videos, they all have a youtube channel. Some youtubers are really fun to watch like kibler, trump or toast but they are not the guys you want if you aim to be better at the game. Watch rdu, deathstarve, thijs, firebat, they are top ladder players and go to tournaments. I learnt a lot from them and they explain most of their moves, so you have a better understanding of each situation. Play top tier decks before trying to play fun decks, by learning how to play these decks, you will know why these decks are good and you'll become a better deckbuilder. Then you can try to improve your own fun decks.

Nah, you can still climb playing homebrew decks, espeically right now. I made fairly close to a meta bomb warrior, barely lost a game, but also played my own mage using just about every spicey card available including toki, kalegos, antonidas, and as many new cards as possible, hardly lost a game. Then a played some howmebrew hunter following the same idea, and that was good too.
You just need to get good, seriously. Hearthtone is one of those games where RNG matters, but its amazing how good players make the RNG work for them by planning ahead, playing around what the opponent is likely to have and manipulating the board. In one of instances you can blame RNG, but RNG is no excuse for sucking for game after game after game.
the biggest thing that helped me was watching HCT's in 2018 which is the year i started playing. Watching all the best decks from different kinds of players and seeing the different ways things can go is better than watching any one streamer, IMO. That probably doesn't help much right now because this expansion just came out, but keep an eye out for the events.
If want to add me I don't mind watching some games and talking about it, I finished top 500 legend the last couples seasons but I still dumb plays sometimes and I haven't played a lot of these new decks much. Bumping token druid to legend right now, currently rank 3.
Understanding the fundamentals of the game is probably the most important thing. Knowing when to play for tempo and when you need to take risks to swing things back, how to play around opponents decks and hedge resources against them. You get better at playing every deck when you understand these things better. When i first started playing I often focused too much on comboing things out and synergies when I didn't realize how much tempo mattered.
It sounds like a big problem you're having is finding a competitive deck that you really enjoy. Having a deck you love is super important in my opinion, because it makes you WANT to learn things about it. It's not easy to just take the highest t1 deck and pick it up because if you don't give a shit about it you won't learn the nuances of it and what makes it win. Shudderwock shaman was my favorite deck but then they nerfed it. After that I really started to enjoy deathrattle hunter and that is what I was taking to legend in Rumble. Right now I like Big Shaman and Token Druid. Big Shaman is suuuper fun.

Bro. I would LOVE to be friends. Just PM me and we'll share usernames. Yeah I could definitely use "tutoring" i guess .
Play and watch people better than you play. This is the best general advice I can give anyone to get better in ANY competitive game.
And to be honest, I wouldn't bother with "fun" streamers like others suggest, I'd recommend instead to watch tournament players doing both ladder and tournaments.
