I was wondering if anyone knew approximately how many packs was needed to complete a set? No need to get all the cards from the pack, using the dust from dupplicates to complete what's missing counts too. Any ideas? I was thinking around 250 but I have no idea.
I can't quote exact numbers, but assuming you start with 0 dust and 0 gold, i would say around 180-200 packs. The "no-duplicate" legendary rule established last year really helps save a ton of dust, thus making it more cost efficient.
If you do have the inclination of buying packs at any point, i would always advise buying the bundles and i would always suggest doing so (and any pack buying in general) via amazon coins, since you save a good bit of money and get extra packs while at it. The bundles also give you a guaranteed legendary, per bundle.
Disclaimer; I am in no way sponsored by amazon for the coins, though i wish i was.
Hope that helps.
P.S it would be considerably more for classic set, as it has almost double the cards of rotational expansions.
You get a legendary every 20 packs, so it would take, on average, 460 packs to get all legendaries only by opening packs. A complete set costs 56,940 dust. Dusting a full pack gives, on average, 100 dust so it would take 570 packs to get the full set IF you dust all the contents of the pack. Obviously, getting card you don't own pushes the average dust value of a pack significantly (getting a legendary mean you are saving 1600 dust, or 16 packs equivalently). The truth is that there isn't a fixed number of packs needed to get a full collection. A good estimate is probably around the 250 packs as you said but you may get there before that, or after.
Actually, this time you can do it with less packs. Assuming you don't want to touch wild never ever again: you can dust all the 3 previous set. Assuming you have a decent collection, have al the Hall of Fame Cards and some golden cards form the Year of the Mammoth you may get a collection with 100-150 packs.
Assuming, once again, you will not play wild. Just for Baku and Genn alone (not golden) you will get 4k dust if I'm correct (1600 value per each + 400 dust). That are 10 epics or 50 rares or 100 common.
I'm going to answer your actual question, which was "how may packs do I need to buy to complete a set while using duplicate dust to fill in on the back end?"
The answer is roughly 240 packs. I base this not on any calculation, but on the fact that I always do this, have always done this since the beta, and I've never taken more than 255 or less than 232.

Thank you all! I'm asking this since I have 10k gold at the moment (so 100 packs) and 10k dust (another 100 packs), so wondering if I should buy the bundles or not...
The "no-duplicate" legendary rule established last year really helps save a ton of dust, thus making it more cost efficient.
Not to derail the actual conversation, but do you think the "no duplicate" rule is what caused such a decline in Hearthstone's revenue? Obviously they have lost some of their player base, but the large revenue drop could also be attributed to the "whales" not buying as many packs to complete their sets.
Lately on YouTube I keep getting suggestions to watch old pack opening videos from Kripp and I noticed a lot of the old videos are 700+, 1000+ packs. Newer videos are maybe 300+. But no one talks about the impact that rule may have had on them financially.
Back to the actual topic, I'd say about 250 packs is right.

you should buy the bundle. even if you get a bit more packs than necessary.. you'll get extra dust for the other expansion 4 months later.

I upvoted this comment and also wanted to quote it for more visibility, because there are so many wildly incorrect estimates in this thread. This is a great piece of information.
I can add that I have opened between 190 and 230 packs of all expansions and I do not have all the cards of any of them, but I have got close on some of them, so these figures seem reliable to me.

This has also been my experience, after the no-duplicate-legendaries rule kicked in.

200-250 gets you all the playable cards on average. not all the cards. I have a spreadsheet to track every pack I open. I have opened over 250 but less than 300 for every current standard set except rastakan (180packs), I don't have a single complete set and only have enough dust to complete 1 set. I have all Commons and rares but I'm still missing a bunch of legendaries and epics. Most of these are trash tier, but still.
I want to complete the Classic set. From calculations I've done, it seems like I'll need to buy another 400 packs if I craft cards using dust from duplicates, if I don't get dust from other sources, like Arena (I really suck ass at Arena).
I'd say ~250/300 and on top of that you will need to craft cards for something like 15.000 dust. Last 2 sets I've got all legendaries (crafting 5 legendary in each, 8.000 dust) and I still miss 14 epics in TBP (5.600 dust) and 12 in RR (4.800). And in both sets I crafted 3 epics (so another 1.200 dust)
I got the full collection (wild and standard). I almost neve desenchanted any gold card and also crafted a lot of golden leg or golden discovery effects cards. Can't say how many packs I opened, but I can tell you that 250 packs are average what u need for have a complete expansion, not collection, expansion.

around 400 I guess. this exp. I have opened around 300 and still need 12 leg and 18 epic. I currently need 26400 dust to complete set.

lmao no way this is accurate.. 400-450 would be if you don't use any dust from your duplicates.
More like 200-250 depending on RNG.
Full collection is way too much effort. But you can have all the meta decks, from around 200 packs from each active set.
It depends. A bit over 200 if you dust your goldens, closer to 250 if you don’t.

Remember that's average. You can still go 40 packs with only 1 legendary.

Yo!
Very useful pack opening simulator.
