It seems like the development team has run out of ideas. I havent been playing since Beta or anything, but even I can see redundancy in the cards coming out. They are bringing back old cards, similar themes etc...so, does this mean the game is in its twilight years? Or will have it enough newplayers from China for example, to keep it going? Is that a good thing for the game?
With the "failure" of other card games to take over from HS, like Artifact, are we players destined to just seeing repeat cars and ideas from now on? It has been out for 5 years now, and games seem to fade away after that long. Especially a game with so much RNG intractions, which are its charm by the way, runningout of fresh ideas.
Personally, I dont mind, cuz I didnt play HS when Goblins and Gnomes was out etc....so I havent had a chance to see these themes in action, but what about long time players? How does Firebat, for example, feel about this? Does it matter what he thinks? Is the game primarily for new players now?
I have been playing for about 4 years, and this expansion has brought the least amount of hype for me. I am more excited to see certain cards leave standard than I am about most of the cards that were revealed so far. I am not saying that I am a creative genius who has better ideas, but the recycled themes seem like a cop out to me.
This! Every new year and expansion these threads pop up. The game can be stale or even boring for some periods of time but it’s still one of the games I keep coming back to.
I think the recycled themes are supposed to be about reconnecting the fanbase to the previous successes of the game. I think having mechanics return is fine and healthy as long as they are brought back in a way that isn't stagnant. For example it would be stupid to bring back Odd and Even cards that work in exactly the same way as Genn and Baku, but the odd/even mechanic could actually work really well (just not adjusting hero powers).
This release does feel a bit like a cash cow - it's more variations on stuff we've already seen before, with the rather cheeky setup that you need to buy in if you want to keep playing standard above R20.
However, that's far from running its course, Blizz will keep doing this for as many cycles as it sells. In reality, this is probably what a lot of fans actually want, rather than an expansion with a ton of original (and inevitably broken) ideas that completely change the way the game plays.
I don’t think it has but I see where you’re coming from. I’ve been playing since beta and they seem to be recycling cards more often now. What was a legendary a few years ago is now a common card today.
Of course each expansion is filled with deck fillers so as long as they keep implementing new ideas and mechanics, I’m ok with a repeat card every so often, especially if it’s printed better this time around
I keep seeing people saying that recycling mechanics for sets is a bad thing and I do not understand. Recycled mechanics are a sign of growth in card games, MTG has recycled mechanics again and again. All it means is that they think they were onto something in the past, and they think they can flex the mechanic to make it even better. It's not a sign of decreased creativity in fact I think its the opposite.
Also as kind of a side point, a card game being big enough to reference its own past is an amazing sign of progress!
I am actually quite happy and hyped with the new expansion so far, so I don't think the developers have run out of ideas (at least not yet).
And in Magic for example (a game with 25years of history) they have reprinted quite a few cards for all those years and the game is still alive and kicking - so, that can be THAT bad of a thing, can it?

Just because I'm bad at something, doesn't mean that that something is bad.
I don't nkow. I guess I see it differently from others. I heard people go "Oh my they just grabbed all of the villains from the past 5 years." and "Oh they are calling back old mechanics." and "Wait, what are they going to do for the 5th anniversary?" and just blend all that together.
Feels right for the 5th anniversary to revisit the past 5 years, all of the old villains, all of the old ideas, bringing in what worked, fixing what went wrong, remixing it to see what comes from it.
@*$#)( one of the most enjoyed brawls was litereally bringing back old sets.
#*($&#(&*$* one of the biggest complaints was in how they keep bringing in broken OP cards that overwhelm everything.
and one of the OTHER big coplaints was in how they 'give up' on old mechanics. How many "BRING BACK INSPIRE/ECHO/MECHS/EXT" threads have we had?
So given all that, it makes sense for this to be a big nostalgia trip. Along with this apparant 'new mentality' to try to fix the mistakes of the old crew. Spare parts that are nice to have. A decently powered 'echo'. An attempt to see if the legendary Dr boom card would stand up to a new meta? Seems interesting.
and if it all fails, well we can't fall back to the old DK/Kobolds meta we keep hanging on to. So we'll have to find ways to make last year's cards, which we mostly ignored' work. So either we actually USE cards we've ignored or we get new cards to use. Works either way for me.
That's my headspace. I'm not so much OMG HYPE but I'm happy for what's coming up.

On the eve of a new year and new, awesome looking release....
A topic appears like this.
No, HS hasn't run it's course.
No. And if they continue with this new approach that they show now, the game has a lot of years to come.

HS is far from over.
No :) I don’t think so.

There we go again. Every expansion this same thread is opened with the same title, which should probably be enough of an answer.
It's not rng if you call - Amaz
yes

Probably not. It may have run its course, though.
No. These threads have roughly the same frequency every expansion. Which is a good indicator.

New expansion seems to be promising - based a little closer to original WoW lore than bullshit like Mean Streets.
If they keep this up, then HS still has some life left in it.
