Just an opinion here that came up in a recent discussion.
Many of us have seen streamers opening hundreds, if not thousands of packs. I've always felt though that just buying the full collection outright kind of takes away a large part of the fun.
I've always enjoyed the experience of trying to balance my collection, thinking about what I want to dust and what I need to craft. I find this part of the game of resource management, and working towards that point where I can craft that legendary I've been grinding for to be one of the most rewarding parts of the game.
What does everyone think? I've added a poll to see where everyone is on this topic. Also, I used to be free to play, and I've payed out for whole collections. For me, buying a single bundle and working to fill in the gaps of my collection has been the most enjoyable experience.
Meh... I’m like you where I’ll buy one bundle and work for the rest (arena, etc.) but it’s hard to be ftp when all the competitive decks are gated behind must have legendaries and epics.
If I had to pick between the two, I'd pick being able to put down hundreds of dollars on the game to get all the cards I want. I mean, seems like an easy choice to me. However, since I'm not able to put down hundreds of dollars on the game to get all the cards I want, realistically I can spend like 20 dollars per expansion...and only being able to work with 2-3 legendaries, while limiting, does add some flair/flavor/fun to what you can realistically do, and what you can work for. But I'd take just having all the cards over that any day of the week, only problem is that's not realistic (for me) so mine is more of a make do with what you have, make the best of it sort of situation. It's still fun, challenging, and rewarding in its own way. Just not as nice as being rich
Variety is what makes HS fun. Playing the same deck over and over again is just dull, particularly considering that the rewards for playing are so weak.

You can still get a lot of variety in play by still being relatively budget (buy a bundle each expansion).
I guess my point is it's kind of similar to the Rastakahn Rumble single player content. It wasn't that fun because everything was offered up from the get go. There was very little rewards or progression.
The game is more fun when you work towards things. Of course, climbing ladder is one part of that, but I think for many people there is a lot of fun in working towards that next big craft. I just noticed it's not a part of the fun of the game that gets talked about positively.
I wouldn't necessarily call it more fun, but f2p certainly has its own charm. There's the element of collection management strategy that you never experience if you're buying a lot of cards
As for streamers opening packs ... well, that's their job. They need to be able to show their audience a wide range of decks. There's probably a lot of people out there who watch streamers because they can't afford the decks themselves. It doesn't mean streamers don't play with the concept occasionally though. There's plenty of them who do f2p challenges. It used to be all the rage a few years ago
Its been a while since I started buying packs instead of grinding them, to tell you the truth it is more fun to have whatever cards you need to experiment whatever decks you want, instead of grinding them
I definitely have more fun now that I’ve said fuck it and just pay to get the cards I want. It’s opened up way more deckbuilding possibilities (obviously) and It helps keep the game fresh when I get tired of playing one type of deck.
I’m not really a competitive player, though, so the mindset may be different. For me, variety is what keeps me coming back to HS and I wouldn’t be able to stick with it if I couldn’t play whatever sounded fun at that moment. I actually first quit the game back during TGT (came back for Boomsday launch) because I simply couldn’t afford to buy enough packs, nor would I ever have had the patience and dedication to grind out enough gold for a complete collection. Ironically, now that I can just play whatever I want, I play a LOT more. Just goes to show that the HS economy can be really problematic for some people who would otherwise love the game.
If they had more ways to get money from whales outside of just buying packs (which, by the way, has an upper limit) and made the base game less expensive overall, they’d probably have a much bigger playerbase without sacrificing the bottom line.
OP, your topic reminds on WoW and how you'd have to grind for the various raid/conquest gear. Many players took a break when they hit that 'gear bench-mark' and couldn't progress further until a new patch. I think of HS expansion grinding somewhat similarly. People say that if they had all of the cards right away that they would be more inclined to play more. I'd have to disagree though. People would play more often at the start of an expansion, but then they would surely help increase the crowd of players later on that would bemoan how they are suddenly bored of the metas and felt that they were playing the same game over and over until a HS 'patch' came out.
Long story short I think it is better when players have a goal to work for instead of having everything all at once. Having everything does nothing but increase the likelihood more players quit due to burn-out and/or boredom.

That’s a fair point, but that’s why many players have been asking for the devs to add more goals besides ladder rank to the game. Whether it’s season-long quests, achievements, more meaningful leveling, stat tracking, etc. It’s true that grinding for a certain card is a goal and a lot of players enjoy that aspect of the game, but it’s not for everyone.

If you have everything, you get bored more quickly.
If you have enough to win but still have gaps, the latter pushes you. Interest pops by watching streamers or opponents with unusual decks or mechanics you are fond of.
If you're F2P, you have to like repetition. Same deck, same deck, same deck for days/weeks/months.

I think this is something for Devs to take note of. I think a lot of people’s interest in playing the game daily is based on can they work towards something. For example, a lot of people say they just do the daily quest.
What would be amazing is if every month you could ‘wishlist’ a legendary, so that you have a higher (or guaranteed?) chance of opening that card when you open golden goodness.
it would certainly make you more eager to grind for packs.
I’ve played since Old Gods released. I played on and off that year and really got into the game hardcore since Un’goro. From then to now, I’ve probably spent about $300 total on this game. That is including the “smaller” pre-purchase for RoS. So 3 full years of having an active account, and I’ve managed to spend an average of $100 per year on HS. I really dont consider this bad since I really don’t buy video games anymore like I did when I was younger. The way I see it, I can pre-purchase the first and final expansion of the year and use the wild dust to fill in the rest. Now that I’m hitting a full year in the game of pretty heavy play, I’ll get to see how big my collection of the new set gets. I think day one I will have every common and rare, a good amount of epics, and a handful of legendaries. This is all coming from 50 packs purchased, an additional 70 from gold, and about 5 from the promos that always happen week 1. 125 packs got me a long way in frozen throne, and now that I’m backed by about 30k dust as well I should be more than ready for the set and potentially have the ability to craft it all if I really see it fit. But the key to my success is what the OP highlights and what the grand majority of voters believe: truly ensuring you want the cards you have. I’f I’m not going to have fun I don’t want it. I’m not a competionist and I’m definitely partial to certain classes. So I’m still missing epics and legendaries from Classic, Raven, and soon to be Dragon... but that is ok. I’m looking forward to slowly transitioning to free to play. Maybe I will even keep some wild cards this time, but when it all comes down to it I’m having fun, and I’m proof you don’t need to spend hundreds on a single expansion just to play and enjoy the game.
I am a F2P and I can tell you that there is more going on when it comes to building a decent collection. I have a gold collecting method to maximize gold. Usually, i collect between 8.5k gold to 10k gold per expansion. Which consists of rerolling 50 gold quests, trying to make 20-30g a day from wins, and trading the 80 gold quest for maximum value. etc.
I spend all the collected gold on the newly released expansion and start saving again for the next one.
I like being the underdog and overcoming all the odds against me. it is not fun when you don't have a decent collection, but the sense of accomplishment might be greater if you achieve your goals with the limited amount of cards available to you and learned how to best manage them. Building decks may be fun, but I like making small tweaks to my existing decks with the ever-shifting meta. During the Witchwood meta, I was able to build 2 decks for the fewest amount of dust by looking at my card collection. I had Rexxar in my collection, so I crafted Rok'Delar and other required cards under 3k dust to make Spell hunter. I had Baku, and I spent about 2k dust crafting the odd rogue. Made small tweaks to these two decks until the nerfs hit the hardest and now I quit the ladder and waiting for the rotation.
I'm F2P with a decent collection and enjoy the thrill of opening new packs throughout the expansion life. A new legendary can point me towards new deck, neglected class or totally different playstyle (like Mecha'thun Druid). I can easily afford to craft two or three Tier 1 decks but often don't do so if I don't fancy them.

Playing Hearthstone in German solely for Garrosh sounds. Sieg oder Tod!
I typically buy the 50 dollar bundle. That mixed with dust and gold built up since the previous expansion allows me to acquire most of the cards I want when an expansion comes out. I will say being able to play with more cards is generally more fun. However it can burn you out quicker if you have everything right away as there is not hgg int new to be gained. So I'd say you can have more fun with the full collection, but longer fun slowly earning the cards if that makes any sense.
Well. This is going to be rather unpopular i guess, but heres my very personal point:
I basically buy every preorder bundle thats available and spent all my gold once a new exp hits (8000-10000 gold) and being very lucky i usually only miss a few legendaries day1. I really love the first two weeks where everythings new and i want to try all the cards... So yeah. Hearthstone is my only game since im quite old and work a lot. For me spending 300ish euros/year still feels fine, cause im having a lot of fun.

I've never really grinded with Arena (mainly because I'm not that good at it).
How beneficial is it to use Arena as your main way of collecting resources?

Agree with all of this. Sometimes opening a legendary mid expansion makes you suddenly start experimenting with new decks and reignites your interest.
