This is something we really need to consider. Quote from an article:
THE REAL COST OF EACH EXPANSION
It costs about $150 plus all the gold you earn from four months of playing to get most of the good stuff in a Hearthstone expansion, and probably about $200 to get everything in a new set without breaking down your golden cards for dust.
That's a lot of money on a single game every four months. And bear in mind that a good percentage of the cards will be pure crap.
That quote is idiotic.
Every expansion has maybe 3-4 good legendary cards and a handful of good epics. Once you buy a pre-order you will already at least get some of those epics + enough dust to craft some other good stuff. The only cards which require actual dust grinding are legendary cards but the amount of new meta staple legendary minions is so abysmally low that the grind isn't even that long or hard.
''It costs all of the gold for packs in four months to get new cards'' no fucking shit, Sherlock, what else are you going to do with the gold that you earn if not obtain packs with them?
The cost is still too high even factoring in "but they gotta make money somehow!" the reason being EPIC cards still come in duplicates (after the 2nd copy), if they changed this one thing like they did for legendaries it would immediately save everyone a lot of money, and more importantly, a lot of grief. There's no worse feeling than getting your 3rd or 4th of the same epic in the limited number of packs you can realistically open. It's a real feelsbadman moment. Yeah theoretically this is costing them money, because people will get all their epics quicker, but I really don't think that's much of a factor tbh...they'd earn far more real dollars by implementing that change, it would make people like me more inclined to spend for packs.
Article is 2 years old. I think K&C was probably the most expensive set in HS history in terms of lots of mandatory rares and legends to succeed.
They are also pretty vague in what exactly they consider ‘cards needed to play the game’. It seems like they want to play every single meta deck the day the expansion drops. For anyone on a budget this is a terrible system.
Yes it's 2 years old but still totally valid. I assume that "cards needed to play the game" are the cards used in the most popular decks considering you need to climb and counter the decks in the meta (at least for one class or two). And no they don't "want to play every single meta deck the day the expansion drops" But it's giving you an idea of the cost if you want to get most of the good stuff in an expansion.

Arena maybe ? Now he can buy adventures too. Honestly I'm planning to do so. well, they will bring probably one wing per week so i can get my adventure gold from my dailies and daily win golds before wings will hit.
Memedeck-seeker. Always tries to build new decks. Hates tournements, streamers, netdecks and poor-o players. ah, but a tournement mode could be great !!!
Owning everything isn't the same as the cost to be competitive.
And the cost of having every tier 0, 1, & 2 deck every time the meta changes isn't the same as the cost of upkeeping a couple competitive decks each month.
You in nowise need to sink $150 dollars to play the game, nor does it cost that much to keep up with two solid decks.
Owning & being able to play EVERYTHING =/= the cost for the average player to ladder up to a decent rank (ignoring the skill of the individual player).
3 months daily wins gives you 90x100 = 9000 Daily quests 60 for 1 day gives you 60x90 = 5400 Events + challenge quests gives you = 2000 - 5000 max.
Total = 23000 golds at best with dailies, quests, events.
so that means you could buy 230 packs with gold in 3 months at best which is quite well even without arena. So if a new player starts the game and buys the first expansion he encounters or only buys pre-order and 50 more packs, he doesn't need to spend any other real money to game for a neraly-full experience of the game.
So it is an illusion, illusion it's a perfect illusioooooooooon...
Edit: lol, what do i think to post that. it is a wrong calculation, it is total of 19400, i really wonder how i could count 23000 golds. I mean maybe I have thought 3.6k leftover golds but it doesn't fit a new player and i didn't remember what did i think when i post that. :DAnyways 194 packs is not bad afterall. lol.
Edit2: Oh I remembered, If you can see the original post it was about it is impossible to collect 50k gold in 3 months and i was exaggerating the daily quests like "if you have 100-gold quest per day". pheeww. I have been worried about my brain for a moment. so; illusion illusion illusioooooon...

100 gold for daily wins which is gives 30 matches (no losses), which is exceptional. One match varies, let's say, between 5 mins up to 20 mins. Let's take an average of 7 mins 30 matches (again no losses) is 210 mins per day for 90 days!! I doubt that most of us have that kind to time to put in HS. Doable but no realistic at all.

and that's why we are facing top tier decks in casual games and that's why the aggro will be always the most played archetype with quick climbing. I mean, I can't also always get the 30 wins per day. I was able to while i'm in school days but not anymore so That's why I have started to spend some real money. I am just saying here there is no need to spend hundreds of real money for complete set. Just pre-order is enough. You can fill the remaining holes of your collection with in-game currency.
I've just mentioned the posibilities.
I am a living example of why you don't need to spend that much gold. I have been a f2p player until boomsday and got almost all of the cards. Because before boomsday, my university life has ended. Before that I could get daily golds mostly and didn't need to spend real money until I have no time for that.

Ok I will shut my mouth up.
Arena still provides you with packs and individual cards and thus builds up your collection. You're still spending all of your gold to build up your adventure. The upcoming adventures are an exception to the rule because we didn't have adventures with wings which cost gold to unlock but don't provide cards in return
Oh cry more.... I am spending $50 USD and I'll probably get every single card I want with the dust and gold I saved up to this point. I did not save since the beginning of RR and I still am on par for about 6k by release of RoS. If I save day 1 of RoS and play at the rate I am now I'll have like 8-10k for the one in August, and at that point the game is probably free to play for me. You all come onto forums and cry about the cost of playing everything in the game like you deserve all the cards. Guess what? Hearthstone is described in the first sentence of it's bio online as a COLLECTIBLE CARD GAME. So if you could barely play, or play minimally, and easily buy into all the cards then what point is there for every player to not open the game and be gifted every set? Yeah turns out it costs a lot of money to be able to do whatever you want in a game that usually requires heavy grinding and a lot of dedicated hours from dedicated fans. Keep playing, you're wasting time falling behind being on here complaining.
the time investment required to unlock everything without spending money is unreal
Its almost as if they didn't want that to be an option...lest every player be running around with free Rank 25 netdecks instead of the ones they paid for...
