I liked the time when Patron Warrior was king. I never got to play the deck before the nerf, mind you, and it was uninteractive as hell. Still, it was the one time when morons were unable to just pick up the strongest deck and drool all over the place. If someone got the Legend card back from that time, you could tell they were good at the game.
On the other side of the spectrum, we have the Yogg days, which were equally amazing. There was so much butthurt from people who felt like their "skill" had been defiled that I found myself enjoying QQ threads for the first time ever. Also, it was quite hilarious to see even the pros not giving a f**k about anyone's delusions of grandeur. Truly, that was the golden age of HS.

The deck was weak against the pros, but it easily tore through pre-legend players.
But I'm nitpicking. If you are looking for a meta which had a high skill ceiling, Patron was a golden time for you.
I wouldn't say Yogg was a good time for PLAYING skill wise. The decks were pretty curvey and not a whole lot of decisions to make. You just need to know which is the best card at the time. Note that I love tempo decks, but I'll admit, they are the mindless archetype.
Old Gods was a good time for deck DESIGNERS though. High tier decks were still being found over a month after the expansion set and the meta shifted around them. There wasn't really an obvious choice (who knew that Yogg then later Y'saarj would be the powerhouses?!) and everything the general public thought was going to happen didn't happen.
P.S. it was even better with pre-nerf Innervates and an extra Savage Roar :)
(If you didn't know, the 3 Treants used to have charge and died at end of turn, but didn't matter because with savage roar x2 you'd just kill your opponent)
hehe i heard that many cried about this too, i wonder if this would be too op now as well.
UGH I can still remember queing into druid as control warrior back then it was such an unfavorable matchup. I can't remember why exactly lol but I can remember dying force savage many a time. Bonus points if they had force savage innervate savage :)
I honestly think we’re about to enter the best meta for a long long time.
The power creep year of the mammoth rotates out. From what we’ve seen over the last year and cards revealed from RoS so far, it’s leaning towards a slower control meta.
Also, team 5 have shown that they are willing to kill stuff early for balance if it’s ruining the fun of the game (bye Genn and Baku).

Combo Druid wasn't actually "too op". Sometimes it was top tier, sometimes it was only brought because it win unfavorable matches sometimes but otherwise sucked. But it wasn't really BROKEN.
The problem with Combo Druid wasn't that it was too strong, but that it was always the best choice for druid. You literally had no reason to play anything other than some variation of the combo. If the combo was too weak, then you just didn't play druid.
Druid was the perfect example of the problem with the Classic set. As to why it was nerfed instead of HoFed, that was mostly because they didn't think to HoF cards back then and thus went nerf instead. The jury is still out whether it's best to leave it in the past or revive it for wild.

I’m super hyped for the year of the Dragon.
Mmmmmmm.... Shadowy thoughts.
