I was so excited to see a new Rafaam card. But when they revealed him yesterday, I was totally stunned, how lazy designed card it is.
I'm tired of Legendary cards that create other Legendary cards. We always get at least one per expansion. There are so many fun, flavourful and creative custom cards in the net, but the official cards always ends up in this boring design.
I'm talking about these cards:
- Rotface
- Sindragosa
- Sneed's Old Shredder
- Confessor Palatress
- Jan'alai, the Dragonhawk
- Toki, Time-tinker
- Prince Liam
- Elise Starseeker
- Face Collector
- Prince Malchezaar
And now Arc-Villain Rafaam.
Why? Really? How long can this go on?
He is an evil relic-thief, an iconic figure in the HS history, and that's all he's got?
I do agree they do them alot, however flavor wise and play wise it makes sense.
Rafaam is Boss of an evil team of Legendaries makes sense for him to do something based on recruiting new members so Turning your deck in legendaries does make sense. Also he comes from LOE with the Golden Monkey, so its a good throwback.
I don't see how Jan'alai, the Dragonhawk is on your list, it's Ragnaros brought back to standard but only for Mage with a condition added to keep it balanced and it's ALWAYS Ragnaros, no random shit there. Also I think cards that don't add anything to your hand but put them on the field (Confessor Paletress, Sneed's Old Shredder, Rotface) are rather fun to play with since they can and often do offer a secondary win condition and have Highroll potential. Besides that, I think they are great designed cards and are very flavorful for what they represent (Sneeds Shredder kicks out his "driver" and so on). I get that you don't like that they just printed Golden Monkey 2.0 without a fun condition and a lot of people are salty about that but value generating cards are often very helpful for control decks and do more than you think.
Like Elise and the Golden Monkey, this card will be used in late game scenarios where the cards in your deck and/or hand will not win you the game and you need more threats, not removal.
So Hellfire is mostly pointless late game when people are playing 8 and 9 drops. But the Warlock can now match the big drops but out value the opponent.
It's a thematic card? but also lazy design? I think it can be both. I actually would have liked something a bit more direct.
Like this...
Battlecry: Recruit 1 Legendary from your deck and Summon 1 from your Hand.
I think that would have made more 'thematic' sense as he is specifically forming a league of people he WANTS on his side. Not a bunch of random scrubs that may or may not be good enough.
Like if you got Bloodmage Thalnos. Is that really worthy of being part of the EVIL team?
I too was excited about the new Rafaam, now I've seen it and all I think is my poor golden elise starseeker being powercreeped. Then I realise.. Elise is neutral... And it's actually a much better competitive card due to its effect being delayed and attached to a 2 mana card that allows you to play elise at any time without ruining your hand.
And then I saw Kalecgos and now I am super excited about the original arch-thief Rafaam getting very serious synergy!
All in all, I'm still more excited than disappointed. But yeah, these legendary generator effects are kinda boring and redundant and in the end, rarely powerful.
Some of them I don't mind, but to make Golden Monkey 2.0 is pretty lazy. It also has nothing to do with warlock
I think the effect fits the flavor of the card perfectly. Arch-Thief Rafaam's master plan in the League of Explorers adventure was to acquire rare artifacts, specifically the Golden Monkey. The fact that Arch-Villain Rafaam has the same effect as the Golden Monkey shows us that he somehow finally acquired it and has the ability to use the power of the Golden Monkey at will. In possession of the power of the Golden Monkey, Rafaam is no longer an Arch-Thief, but a full-blown Arch-Villian!
the design is quite lazy and I would have liked rafaam to be a more flashy card with a cool effect like the old one, however flavour wise it makes perfect sense so I'm not mad they decided to go for this. Also, golden rafaam = tons of golden legendaries so if you open a golden one of him that'd be super value ^^
I think the new Rafaam feels a bit boring for the big villain but as a whole these cards are very fun.
You’ve also targeted the Trollden All-Stars here. They are largely high roll/low roll cards. Many like the RNG element these cards bring. They create very dynamic and unique games.

Obey C'Thun, Praise The Darkness, Pet Hakkar, the Soulflayer, Love Yogg-Saron, Hope's End
I kinda like them.
I feel the same way. this guy was supposed be our lich king 2.0. now all we have is y'sera.
Rejoice, for even in death, you have become children of Thanos.

I kinda agree. Except for Confessor Palatress, that is spot on for her.
I like some of them. Especially those with some requirements added to them (Rotface, Sindragosa, Elise). But totally agree on the Rafaam part.
Lots of people LOVE random legendaries.

I usually like them. I think its a good fit for hearthstone. However this is too direct imo. And definatly a waste of rafam. Hope he gets a new card.
Shout out to rafams infinity gauntlet tho
If you have a deck idea might as well go full ham on it.
Thematically I like Rafaam. Rafaam stole the golden monkey from Elise and is now wielding it.
