Un'Goro by a looooong way. That was just such a brilliant set with hardly any bad cards printed and it led to some of the best times I've had since I started playing (I started between OG Hearthstone and Pre Naxx).
The worst? Ummmmm... Probably MSoG Early Meta. Pirate Warrior made me want to vomit, until I caved in, crafted Patches the Pirate and joined in the 'fun' .. 😬
The worst is when MSOG just came out when the meta is just patches vs reno. I remember when in tournament, pro player just concede on turn 6 because they do not have reno in their hand, if they had, opp just concede...
I'm not saying MSG was a good Meta, but with the large number of posters in this thread talking about MSG being defined by Pirate Warrior makes me wonder how many of them even played the game back then.
I was casually browsing through the posts on this thread, until I stumbled upon yours.
Tbh I kinda missed Aggro Shaman in my previous comment on purpose. I do remember facing this archtype a lot and I will never forget dying to it on turn 4 twice with no way to prevent the outcome. I agree with you, that Aggro Shaman had a far more superior early game and together with tools like Devolve, Maelstrom Portal etc it could bypass all sorts of taunts and stop the enemy's aggression. But back when I was laddering with Renolock, I faced pirate warriors far too often and got tired of hearing "Who goes tharr!" (before the nerf), "Fly, Polly!" or "Ahaa" into "I'm in charrrge here" on turn 1.
Best era was league of explorers. Worst era was MSOG. Pirate warrior crushes jade druid, jade druid destroys reno decks, reno decks just about beat pirate warrior because that match up was basically whether pirate warrior can rush you down before turn 6 and if you actually draw reno by turn 6. But if pirate warrior got the nuts draw, they could kill you BY TURN 3! Seriously when you were playing against pirate warrior, you were under immediate pressure from turn 1 because of how stupidly aggressive and fast the deck was.
We have had broken as hell decks since then, but we have never again had a rock, papers, scissors meta.
The best deck by far in MSOG was Aggro Shaman. It was just as explosive as Pirate Warrior, but it beat the crap out of Pirate Warrior. It's early game minions (Tunnel Trogg and Totem Golem) were better, it ran the Pirate Package as well, and it's weapons (the two Claws) were just as good. But it also had small AOE (Portal), and taunts (Feral Spirits), so the matchup was extremely favorable. It's only when the nerfs to Spirit Claws and Small Time Buccaneer came that Aggro Shaman was slowed down enough to allow Pirate Warrior to "shine".
I'm not saying MSG was a good Meta, but with the large number of posters in this thread talking about MSG being defined by Pirate Warrior makes me wonder how many of them even played the game back then.
Aggro Shaman? I think you are confusing metas dude. Aggro shaman was most dominant in whispers of the old gods with 1 mana rockbiter weapons, totem golems, the 1 mana 1/3 trogg that gained attack with overload, crackle, 4mana 7/7, unnerfed tuskarr totemic that could spawn totem golems etc. MSOG was defined by a rock, paper scissors meta featuring Pirate warrior, jade druid and renolock.
It is my opinion so don't accuse me of not playing back then when my opinion is different then yours. And yes I am salty about pirate warrior because that is the only deck in hearthstone that has ever killed me on turn 3

I know that deck. But in my personal experience Pirate warrior was the main offender during MSOG. I have always found Pirate warrior to be faster during that meta, thats all. Or is my opinion going to lead to a flame war over which deck is faster, because I am only here to state my opinion, not here to argue over decks.

Shaman certainly was not anywhere near the strongest deck in MSOG. aggro shaman actually died off and got replaced by midrange shaman when tuskarr totemic and rockbiter weapon got hit with the nerf bat during the karazhan meta.
There are no surprises when it comes to the top deck, as Aggro Shaman continues to lead the pack.

Aggro Shaman is still one of the most powerful forces on the ladder. Even with other Shaman archetypes on the rise, it is the most popular choice within the class. Spo’s take on Aggro Shaman, which utilizes both a Pirate and a Jade package, is the most common variant of the archetype and the one with the most success currently. Amnesiac finished top 5 legend with a build very similar to Spo’s, with the difference being the inclusion of an Azure Drake instead of a Maelstrom Portal. Some Aggro Shaman lists even include two Azure Drakes, which is the result of the Meta slowing down and demanding longevity from the Shaman, especially in the matchup against Reno Mage.
Shaman did Pirates during MSoG. And better than Warrior did. So while Aggro Shaman did die off for a bit when Rockbiter got nerfed, it came back with a vengeance during MSoG. The archetype was at a steady 30% play rate at legend.
Edit: Also, Crackle was gone from Standard during Whispers.
I knew you were going to use that statistic. Like I said I have a bias against Pirate warrior because that is the only deck in the game that has actually killed me on turn 3, And it is just my opinion that Pirate warrior was the worst offender, The decks I saw most during that meta was pirate warrior, jade druid and renolock.
So that is where I stand. And I have no interest in getting into a flame war over just stating my opinion on this thread's question because that is the only thing I came here to do OK? Peace.
I particularly hated the Raza Priest meta, but I think it was narrowly beat by the recent Hunter meta that has only recently been improved with the nerfs.
As for favorite, I remember the Old Gods being the best for me. I just absolutely adored Yogg.
Aggro shaman (MSOG) and mysterious challenger (TgT) metas were really bad but somehow the game still felt somewhat fresh back then.
I had a lot of fun in LoE, WoToG and Un'goro (post Caverns nerf number 1)
It all went downhill for me in K&C to the point where the game isn't enjoyable at all at the moment.
Hoping to have fun in the year of the Dragon, I do believe Blizzard is capable of bringing the game back on its feet

4/3/19 RIP Keith Flint. 😔
Un'Goro was the best, and even though MSoG was the worst, I still had a lot of fun during that time.
The best is ungoro

Glad that blizzard nerf it months later
I was in charge!! - Patches the Pirate
.
I think Boomsday is the best

No, you are the one who is confused. From https://www.vicioussyndicate.com/vs-data-reaper-report-32/

I'm interested in the Dave Kosak or Ben Thompson metas now that the Age of Brode has concluded.

...
Brb, gonna make a Yogg wild deck now.
Best meta: Goblins vs Gnomes. With so much Randomness, it felt like playing Minesweeper in Dark Souls mode.
Hell, that meta even made me punch my keyboard so hard it broke.
