I started playing Hearthstone in Beta, and loved it as a Warcraft/Blizzard lore junkie. When Blizzard decided to remove the Warcraft subtitle from Hearthstone and enter their own unique uninhibited version of the lore, I understood it would be hard to match and not tread on the Warcraft storyverse as it is still ongoing. However, I still felt like the team did a great job of being unique enough while tying it all back. Since MSoG for me at least, I’ve certainly felt like they’ve lost the care for those tie ins to the Warcraft Universe and certainly removing the Hearthstone subtitle that included Warcraft gave them more creative freedom almost to treat it as its own storyverse. What I’m curious is how many people playing or even following here on Hearthpwn care at this point of the lore, and what they prefer in lore. Would you rather the nostalgia if you were a Warcraft fan? Or is unique material at the expense of ignoring Warcraft lore more important?
TLDR: Is Warcraft lore an important part of the Hearthstone storytelling experience? Or does it not matter as long as the story is good.
As someone who never played any Warcraft games, it's interesting to learn about the lore through Hearthstone, but at the same time I kind of like that Hearthstone does some of its own stuff. As long as they stay true to the universe, I'm not sure what the problem is either way.
The original Hearthstone lore with Warcraft lore was middle ground. Medivh, and Ragnaros are great examples of this. Heck, even the Lich King followed this method and had huge success. There was enough Warcraft lore to keep fans happy, but they put goofy spins on most of the lore they tied back to the Warcraft universe. It was the perfect flavor in my opinion. The tie backs are always harder, but again my interest in current lore since these changes has severely dropped
In reality, both extremes would be a bad basis for hearthstone. If it was strictly wow lore, it would easily run out. If it was their own lore, the connection just wouldn’t be there. The best expansions thematically have been ones where they take an iconic segment of wow lore and give it a new twist like Knights of the Frozen Throne. What if each class became a deathknight? what would that be?
I think One Night in Karazhan is oddly enough the perfect example of Hearthstone both stretching Warcraft lore too far, and being too constrained by Warcraft lore. Karazhan is one of the most memorable locations in WoW, being an incredible cool experience in The Burning Crusade and having a lot of its own deeper lore. Me personally, I first got into Warcraft lore after reading The Last Guardian. I wasn't very old at the time, but this haunted wizard's tower where a kindly soul fell into corruption and was eventually redeemed is a pretty epic idea.
That said, the disco theme is really funny and creative. The trailer for Kara is still my favourite. When I think of Hearthstone, I think of taking a serious concept and finding a way to make it utterly goofy, or taking a high fantasy world and mixing in an alien theme. Disco was a great fit - if somebody was going to simulate disco with magic, it would obviously be someone as powerful as Medivh. Setting a 70s expansion explicitly in the past is even clever.
The issue? The team tried too hard to pay homage to the original while still making it silly. So, instead of this epic, haunted tower, you have a goofy place with Beauty and the Beast dinnerware and a funny zoo and opera house. And instead of disco, you just get generic wizard things. The two styles eep off each other too hard, and its left an incoherent mess. I think the real sign is that the set symbol is a rook instead of a musical note or disco ball or something.
Basically, the more directly they tie into established WoW stuff, the less established WoW stuff will push against what they're trying to create. Un'goro is now teaming with life and cultures - Fire Plume Ridge is now an epic volcano instead of a tiny lump. There can be a cavern of DnD kobolds. There can be a science lab in the Netherstorm. It's so much more open now.
In general, Warcraft Lore is much better than the shit they came up with, but hey, that's just my opinion, and probably a very unpopular one. ;)
i don't think it's unpopular, people will enjoy having a WOW lore more than a cheesy story they come up with.
I only said that because every time I express my opinion and point of view about something here, hordes of people start to attack and insult me like there is no tomorrow, while calling me a troll. But hey, at least that makes things fun, don't you think so? :P
What's the reason of the question? Last expansions are not based on Warcraft lore? Just turn on your imagination. Could troll tribes arrange big gladiatorial games in the name of the emperor? Yes. Could Dr. Boom build a secret lab in Netherstorm, hire scientists as mad as he is and design battle robots? Yes. Finally in postcata Blasted Lands there is a cursed forest and Gilneas refugees who try to purify it. Good place for evil orc witch and her minions, isn't it? So the question is wrong couse HS lore is still a Warcraft lore.

Witchwood is set in the Blackwald, which is a forest outside of Gilneas.

I appreciate you’re rebuttal, but no, I feel like the story team has done a horrible job making anything interesting and connected to Warcraft. Again, I understand it’s harder, but I played the game largely because I enjoyed the nostalgia from the Warcraft Universe. Now I just have small hope that will go back, and the money I have sunk into this game keeping me going. Which isn’t much at all.

Yes they started by using Warcraft lore but realized they needed to be able to change that lore or add to it. So as to not make it cannon Hearthstone became a game that is played by the heroes and npc's in Warcraft itself. So it is now a game that someone in that world would create for those people to experience. That is why it remains rooted in Warcraft but can tell different stories and break cannon. I think that way of presenting the game was the best idea that team has ever had.
=D13=
p.s. my personal prediction for the next expansion will be that it is called Mysteries of Dalaran ... It will be kirin-tor based and set in Dalaran where we can experience Violet Hold in solo content. As for a nice juicy dragon for year of the dragon I would go with Korialstrasa or in mage for as Krasus.
I think we’ll have worst lore ever. Recycled characters, mash up of everything in the past. Super unoriginal.
You mean every continual series ever? Can't believe WoW keeps telling us what Jaina is doing, give me some new characters guys! Smh, so unoriginal.
To answer the question, I'm glad they're doing their own thing. Re-telling Warcraft stories beat for beat would be incredibly boring and predictable. Mixing it up with completely original content and occasionally remixing old content - like Knights of the Frozen Throne or Karazhan - is a far better direction for the game.
So I guess I'm more on Unique New Lore of the two options, with an appreciation for new takes on old lore. In any case, there's little chance of them turning to spouting off old lore verbatim any time soon, which is good - we have an entire year of original story upcoming, and they dropped 'Heroes of Warcraft' from the name ages ago.

Try to look wider. Not killing classic lore but filling it out! It's a game that heroes of Azeroth play in the inn after all :)

Going strictly with Warcraft lore wouldn't have been sustainable in the long, better that they severed the connection sooner rather than later
Shouldn't there be a middle ground answer?

Still waiting for that Burning Legion expansion. Perhaps 2 more years when they finally run out of ideas.
Petition for Jaina's boobs to return please. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I wouldnt mind some starcraft and Diablo lore.
