What is he even talking about, Discover was one of the best mechanics they made, that supported limited RNG - the kind of RNG that needs to exist in more instances. Sure, it was painful to die to a 8-mana Pyroblast, but still, it's a great mechanic IMHO
DKs were fine, discover was amazing, odd/even was cool because it limited your possibilities and the only problem with it was netdecking which will never go away. Don't blame the mechanics if the problem lies in an entirely different thing.
Given that Dean Ayala even asks on twitter how to get back people how quit / play less, I think it is pretty safe to assume that the game indeed loses ground quickly. Whereas MTGA rises, and I also moved from playing lots of arena in HS to just doing dailies, if even, while playing much more MTGA.
The game is just too expensive and sorry, but MTG is just the better game. Where HS basically plays in autopilot mode (ANY deck does, only arena is somewhat challenging), MTG allows more complex interactions and is just more fun once you get into it.
Hold on - you mean to suggest MTGA is cheaper option?
It certainly was and still is. Before they introduced duplicate protection, the game was incrediby generous with the rewards from Constructed Event. At that rate, hardcore players could have easily gotten a full playset over time, without paying anything. Sadly they nerfed the rewards when they added the much requested duplicate protection, but it still is much more generous than HS. You already get lots of cards to start with, 3 weekly packs, and if you play just 4 wins per day, you can open another pack daily. Keep in mind though that MTG has a huge cardpool.

DKs are an issue because they allowed infinite value. It's not DK mechanics itself, just the concrete implementation of broken DK battlecries.
Also, if the problem with odd/even is netdecking, which you say will never go away, then the actual problem still is releasing stuff that becomes a problem as netdecking obviously is a thing.
I think they realized with the first set of hero cards and Genn/Baku that they need to be really fucking careful with Hero Powers, which are the worst part of the game.
Honestly, I think we will come to hate Hagatha and Boom almost as much as we hate the original 9 DKs.
IMO, upgrading your hero power needs to come with a very significant downside. For example, Jaraxxus sets your health to 15. I think future hero cards need to have negative, instead of positive, battle cries.
Upgrading your Hero Power is about the most powerful thing you can do in this game, and they haven't balanced it that way.

It is absolutely impossible to release a set containing ~140 PERFECTLY BALANCED cards none of which will be a problem. The problem is the time it takes Blizzard to do something about the obviously overpowered bullshit that tends to stay on the ladder for months on end.

Do you think not being able to play 2-cost cards is not a significant downside?
Also, Jaraxxus summons a goddamn 6/6 with his hero power. You can't compare this shit to gaining 4 armor.
Player base trends in any game is nothing new, sure HS has had it's ups and down but still survives and will for sometime, the next expansion/rotation will surely shake things up and hopefully the state of the game will improve but as it goes you will never satisfy everyone. I am a casual player and do enjoy the game, yeah sometimes I get bored, disgusted like anyone else. so I take a break play something else but I always comeback as I am sure many others will as well.
I have been a following many streamers since I started playing HS 4 years ago, now more than ever I am seeing more of them having little to no HS content in their channels or uploading old content cause they stopped playing to name a few?
Trump, Kibler, Amaz,Firebat, and Savaj that left 3 months ago as well, wonder when Kripp is gonna start quitting HS as well.
apart from dailies I haven't been playing for a while either..here should be an announcement in 1.5 weeks about the new HS year if there isn't anything entirely new I guess I will just quit as well, I don't know why so many of us cope with this game for so long they keep it stale for too long the meta is solved too quickly and the new cards aren't played at all, as well as Blizzard destroying entire class identities cause they are too greedy to nerf their newer cards that ARE THE PROBLEM RIP druid... (never liked druid BTW)
Lots of people making suggestions based on other CCGs, but if hearthstone is having viewer problems lately it's not due to MTGA or any other card game, but the success of Auto-Chess and Apex. That just the way things go, hearthstone is over five years old now. The game is still fine anyway, it'll keep going for a loooooong time yet.
I'd like it if they started rotating WIld cards back into standard and classic cards out, get a more fluid system going with regular changes.
Do you think not being able to play 2-cost cards is not a significant downside?

1) No. Obviously, it is not a significant downside. And before you ask, no, neither is restricting yourself to odd/even. 2) Are you intentionally ignoring their battle cries? Or the fact that it's 5 armor?
I myself stopped playing a month ago after 5 years (since closed beta).
Game is stale and desperately needs new contents, new ways to get cards/dust without being forced to pay to stay updated.
Less RNG.
Magic the Gathering Arena has less RNG. You get the card draw rng and sometimes land flood/screw, but the card design is nearly without any rng (I can remember 2 rng cards in present standard).
Staying updated is equally grind or money intensive as it is in hearthstone though. Nevertheless, I can fully recommend it.
Team 5 has stated outright that the player base drops off at this point in the expac cycle for every expac. Lower viewership certainly does not mean the lost players won't be back.
Still, the abandonment of Tournament Mode is a huge black eye and the lack of game modes is what I see as the true cause of "staleness" in the game. Three game modes with nothing new since TB1 was released nearly 4 years ago is completely unacceptable. Creating a tourney mode that allows players to set parameters on how each set of games is played would eliminate staleness quite effectively.
The thing with 'Tournament mode' is that it means completely different things to different people. To me I see some kind of lock in system where, you pay some gold and lock in to a 8/16 man knock-out, and the winner at the end gets the rewards. Some poeople think it means a a client for tournaments offline in RL, to improve the pro-scene and 'tavern meets'. Some people think it means a way to play a ladder like mode with bans....etc etc.
I can see why Blizzard can't do anything with hte feedback "We want tournament mode"....impossible to know what that even means.

RNG is what makes part of the game exciting. It can lead to epic clips and missplays, and sometimes it's bad for you, sometimes good. From my knowledge, Magic the Gathering can't have this RNG because blizzard prints cards like "Add a random beast yo your hand", which is nearly impossible to do in Magic when your physically holding the cards. RNG is a good aspect of the game. Play chess for a couple of hours and say that I'm wrong

I understand the issue but an indefinite shelving of the mode is idiotic. It may be difficult and it may be expensive, but it's necessary.
Agreed. Blizzard have to be brave and just do something with the idea. But they know that they are going to disappoint a lot of people with whatever they produce as it won't tie in with what many people imagined 'tournament mode' to be.
It's not exactly a great incentive to work hard on something in the game, when you know, before you even put it out there, that it's going to cause floods of angry posts on reddit and hearthpwn, no matter how good a job you do with it.

It means whatever they think it means. They could release different kind of tournament modes or just one which would be updated according to the circumstances and more or less what the mayority of the player base requests. We are talking about a huge company here, they can do any of this and more, much more. Not having released any kind of tournament mode yet is not acceptable by any means, especially for a company like Blizzard.

Discover was fine.

You can't stop the signal.
You could always go play artifact. I hear it sometimes has as many as 1000 concurrent players!
