Hi guys. I want to share with you this video that I found on youtube. It is pretty interesting because it clarifies a very discussed topic here on Hearthpwn that it is the Hearthstone 's cost.
It is obviously and estimate but at least it is something reasonable without any impressions and sensations.
The calculations they did are useful, but don't show the whole picture. It would be interesting to see how much it cost per year to build the top 3-5 competitive decks as that changes from year to year, and having a complete collection isn't necessary to enjoying the game.
Nothing new as a general info, but nice to have actual numbers and statistical data behind it.

I’d say it would cost roughly $50 every expansion to remain competitive if you want general deck variety. This again is assuming you’re not grinding 30 wins every day.
Ah yes. But this calculation is very difficult and probably pointless because there are the nerfs. Once you have even a stupid card nerfed you can throw away an entire deck. Example Saronite Chain Gang for Shudderwock.
So you can build a competitive deck but is it useful if you have it nerfed after 3 months? You will not have it.
And it is also very difficult because if you build an aggro is cheap and a combo and/or control is very expensive.
You dont even need 30 wins a day. A Quest + 9 wins will give you about 10k between expansions. That is 100 packs and let you play a lot of decks without spending a dime. You wont get every card, but you will be competitive.

Agreed.
I also think people's definitions of "competitive" fluctuate drastically depending on the point they want to make.
Those who want to say that HS is too expensive define competitive as "literally being able to build every single tier 1 deck that ever arises during the course of a metagame."
Those who want to say that HS is relatively F2P define competitive as "being able to afford 2 or 3 decks that you can reach legend with."

I think that f2p is a fine goal. But nothing in life is free. You can either spend cash or time. I dont look down on people who spend money if they dont have a lot of time to invest. There is also something to be said for newer players spending real cash to catch up with the meta. If you are newer, and save gold as well as buy the pre order deal you will have a lot of dust that lets you craft cards you may have missed in the year before you started playing and good neutral classic legendaries. Thats basically what I did in the first year, and now I dont plan on spending more real cash this year. Being f2p also requires you to really think through crafting. You cant just rush in and craft, you have to wait for the meta to stabilize. Lots of people have little patience and end up rushing in and crafting crap.

Even without math I can say that is not true. As F2P player you can maybe build 2/3 decks probably top tier in order to reach legend. After you will have them nerfed and you are screwed. You will have nothing.

I think you need to take that comment into the salt thread.

I calculated it lately...and since the expansions and bundles come every 4 months i never realized how much money i spend on hearthstone. Im playing since march 2014, pretty much from the start and i bought every expansion and sometimes the event bundles.
So yeah, well fuck ....i spend about 1000 euros on the game in 5 years. Its insane. I think i wont be the only one. Then again, i mostly had a good time with hs...even now. I dont work 42 hours the week just to have a bad conscience in the end about some fun i allow me to have. Even when it might be just stupid pixels.
And while it seems like a big waste of money, im not sure if its the right approach to think about it.
If i would see my spendings overall in the last 5 years, there would be for sure a lot of unnecessary things & regrets in it.
But yeah, the money could have been used in a better way i guess:)

This is very difficult to estimate.
It is difficult, but it becomes a lot less difficult if you can make some logical assumptions. As long as you are up front about your assumptions and why you made them then your calculations will be useful to a degree. Assumptions were made in this video so it can be done. No calculations on this subject will be perfect, but imperfect calculations on what it costs to play the game with competitive decks is arguably a lot more useful than more complete calculations of what it costs to have a complete collection.
I am f2p and happily so and still enjoy the game and do quite well. I buy packs for gold and at this point what I receive in those packs are cards that I already have. It's been weeks since I've gotten a new card that wasn't already in my collection. I can netdeck what I want and I can homebrew fun ideas I have and have the dust there to craft whatever legendary I wasn't given in a pack.

There is no salt in my comment. The salt is in your comment when you say that a F2P player can have 2/3 decks. He cannot. He can have it for 2/3 months maybe. Then nerfs and bye bye F2P player.

Dust does not burn a hole in the jar. Be careful what you craft, especially before and right after a rotation.
Agreed.

coming in on not spending ANY money on the game for 2 years now (in fact i refuse to support such a crap company nowadays financially)
there's almost no difference in the amount of cards i got (ofc missing a couple of legendaries, no relevant ones though)
so, i'm just wondering why i even bothered to spend money on the game in the first place
Noone is forcing you to buy or play it. /thread

I'm not disagreeing with you.
That channel has many good videos. Haven't watch this yet, nor the other new about Blizz Laying about the real value of latest nerfs

I'd be shocked that there are still new players incoming after all this years.
Compared to MtG: Arena this is still dirt cheap.
Assuming many games can take 20 minutes that is alot of time spent.
