I'm interested to discuss the different opinions of the community regarding the target gold amount a F2P player should aim for coming to the rotation (and subsequent expacs). Obviously "the more the better" is the answer, but not a very valid comment for this discussion.
As a F2P player, it's all about efficiencies. You need to balance your savings with your current investment so that you can maintain your competitiveness in the current meta, while generating enough resources to continue that through each expansion. As your collection of Classic cards fills out the set, it will become easier to stay up with the meta - but often it's a balancing act through buying more packs and saving.
I'd like this thread to assist any new(ish) players who are wondering how to manage their gold. I know these things have been discussed before, but a comprehensive review of things to consider all collated in one place would benefit others I feel (and I wouldn't be surprised if that thread already exists).
So, fire off your thoughts! Primarily, what # of gold *you* believe a F2P should aim for come the rotation. Also feel free to discuss things such as pity timer management, maximising value4gold with Arena, the "sweet spot" of how many packs one should open per expac before they hit diminishing returns - things like that.
I'm adding a component to my tracking spreadsheet that will help players optimise their gold management, so this thread is basically for research purposes :)
targeting between 8k and 10k, even though I will not spend all of it on packs. last expansion (or was it boomsday?) I got pretty mad when they released brawliseum (right word?) just a few weeks after the expansion. So I wanna save around 2k for that.

I'd say having only lived through 2 expacs, 10K is a tonne of gold to save up for F2P! I see plenty of 10G grinding every day in that target!
I'm not F2P but I'm trying to save as much gold as possible so I don't have to spend so much every 4 months. Right now I'm on 3,500 or thereabouts and I haven't missed more than a couple of quests since Rumble released. So I'm aiming for somewhere between 6 and 7k by the time April rolls around.
I don't play Arena but I imagine that those who do and are good at it can quite a bit more.
When it comes to everyone but whales, cash or F2P:
Packs are for your commons and rares
Dust is for your epics and legendaries
You rarely will be content with just ANY legendary or epic, and trying to score certain ones turns the whole thing into a casino. Thus unless you literally plan on buying enough packs to get every card you could want (which I THINK stands at about 200?) then plan on dust to be your way to get the cards you need.
Thus if pack opening is mostly to fill out your rares and commons, then you mostly need about 60-80. That's the point when you'll get most of the commons and rares. More than that just gives you dust, epics, and legendaries, and see above for the second two. Note that how much you WILL use depends on the pity timer so it's a minimum of 60 packs + whatever it takes to get the next legendary if you didn't JUST get it.
So a good plan is to get 6000-8000 gold.
Now before you go OMFG, it's actually not hard to do this:
At about 60 gold on average a day (minimum 50, but you're rerolling to mostly do 60 gold quests) and hitting the 3-win quest once you're netting 70 gold a day or 490 gold a week, or about 1960 a month. Assuming an April release (Witchwood did such) there's 4 months in between Rumble and rotation, netting you 7840 gold.
Myself I like to start saving a month after the last expansion and keep buying packs for the set a month into the release, so instead of saving at December-April I started saving in January and will spend on the rotation set until May. Mechanically the same, but it feels nice to keep getting cards while the set is fresh.
Note that this assumes that you aren't buying older packs, which you SHOULDN'T be doing if you already have the rares/commons for them and have hit the pity timer. Once you stop trying to open packs for legendaries/epics, stopping becomes much easier, which means you can get on the above flow.
(note, sometimes you don't get gold but instead get classic packs in quests. This is a good thing as, on average, you get 100 dust per pack and you WANT dust as that gets you the epics/legendaries you need. Also note we tend to get free packs and usually some event that gives gold/dust/packs/whatever to balance it out)
TL DR! Summary!
Doing quests and getting 3 wins a day while doing quests gets you about 8000 gold between expansions.
You want 6-8k gold as you want 60 packs minimum + whatever it takes to get the next legendary afterwards.
You don't open packs for Legendaries/Epics. You craft them. Packs are for commons/rares. Thus you don't need more packs than that.
Plan to start saving a month after the last expansion, and keep buying packs during the first month until you hit the above marker, then start saving for next expansion. Rinse and repeat.
Do that, along with getting decent in Arena (4+ win average in arena is much better than buying packs) and being VERY frugal/careful in how you use your dust and you'll be doing fine as a F2Per.
I always try to open 100 packs on launch. About 9.5k usually gets me there since Blizzard often gives out some free packs. After that I start saving up and play Arena every now and again for the single packs until I max out the pity timer. Promotions such as Choose your Champion help towards that goal.
In total I open around 120-130 packs of an expansion, which gets me about 6 legendaries, 25-ish epics, and pretty much all rares and commons. As for how many packs a f2p player should be aiming for I'd say at least 70 packs on launch. 100 packs should get you all commons and most of the rares. After that you have to take into consideration which legendaries and epics you're missing, how far you are on your pity timer, and whether the cards you're missing are worth the gold.
I would imagine that one could give any degree of different responses to this: how long is a piece of string, etc. Normally I try and make sure to have enough to open approximately 120 packs (which should secure at least 3 legendaries, if I am bottom-of-the-barrel on the RnG for the pity timer. So that's 12000 gold. However I will offset this amount against pre-purchases etc.
I always buy all the pre-order bundles and then usually have around 4k at least to spend on packs. I like to open around 150 packs on launch day.
Even 150 packs isn't enough to get all the cards but I usually have most of them. Plus the dust from duplicates means I have enough to craft any remaining ones I want.
It's when you go in an unlucky legendary spree that it gets annoying. Thankfully last expansion I never opened Giftah and I haven't to this day despite only missing around 3 or 4 legendarys from RR.
I aim for 100 packs. The above math is right that you only need about 60-80 packs to get all of the commons and rares that you need. The extra 20-40 is mainly for dust and a couple more legendaries.
The one thing I would add is that, if you are doing all of your daily quests and winning a few games a day, you're going to naturally end up with over 9000. I always try to save 50 gold quests to shuffle them, looking for the 60-100 gold quests. Every rotation also comes with events that will generally provide you with pretty substantial gold boosts.
I slacked off last expansion, and I still ended up getting to 9400 gold, which just barely let me open my 100 with the six free packs. It's pretty easy as long as you stay disciplined, and avoid buying packs from older sets.
1. I do every single tavern brawl, daily quest and one-off promotion. I also try to get as many '3 wins' as possible, depending on how much free time I have. I also only play ranked, so that I get the best end of month reward possible. You have to bleed dry all of the free stuff and get maximum value.
2. I spend all my gold on packs for the most recent expansion. Sometimes, I go for earlier ones, depending on how "lucky" I've been with each expansion.
3. I only spend dust on high tier or flexible legendaries and epics. Cards like Baku, Genn, Zilliax, some DKs, voodoo dolls, primordial drakes/glyphs. Whatever.
3. I always disenchant golden legendaries, unless they're tier 1 and I really want them. "Any Legendary you want" is far more valuable to me than "This legendary, but in gold". I also disenchant all duplicate golden non-legendary cards. I don't care about the aesthetic.
4. As soon as a new expansion has been announced. I stop ALL spending and save it all until release. Usually end up getting at least a couple of legendaries worth of dust tavern brawl packs alone, and enough gold to over 40 packs.
5. Repeat
I may not have too many packs to open on release day with this method, but combined with the free packs that are given away, it's usually enough to get all the commons and rares, as well as a large portion of the epics and a handful of legendaries. But, imo, dust is more valuable than gold, so it doesn't really matter if you get dust from the most recent expansion, or from any other packs.
If you re-roll your 50 gold dailies, and win three games each day, you'll earn about 65 gold each day on ladder. With three expansions each year, you get about 120 days to collect gold. That's 7,800-ish gold for each expansion.
This site has a "Play a Friend" thread - once you get a bunch of friends, you'll be able to "exploit" the quest. I've got about three dozen friends, and get two or three PaF requests each week - I opened a little over 110 free packs for each of the expansions last year.
Now that I'm seeing so many people recommending to save what I think are exuberant amounts of gold, is it that everybody has what they 'need' from every expansion already? I've been playing for a year and I still find myself buying packs from older expansions, especially since most of the strongest decks are heavily influenced by year of the mammoth cards. How do you just stop buying packs?
I know it might sound difficult since you're f2p and get nervous with the gold, but I always play Arena after an exp hits. Going around 4-5 wins gives you a cheaper pack, 6+ usually means you're getting a free pack, but hitting in on regular basis isn't really possible.
Aim for around 6-7k gold at minimum. I'm not f2p, but I always have around 5-6k gold + preorder, and grind Arena to maximize pack amount.
I usually have around 5K, but I also pre-order. This nets me the cards and dust to basically have the whole set. So if I was F2P only, I would double the saved gold. 8-10K.

#7k between each exp
i target to get around 8k every release...
To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffer!

Missing lethal since June 2015.
About 8k. That's not random.

I've only spent gold on release days for the last few expos. From very casual but regular play I consistently build up 8,000 gold every 4 months
I have a process that works for me:
1. I do every single tavern brawl, daily quest and one-off promotion. I also try to get as many '3 wins' as possible, depending on how much free time I have.
