two, totems have no attack. in real life, totems are just small wooden pillars. and in the game, they are small wooden pillars with small magic. therefor, it makes no sense thematically to give them attack, or much stats. so if your opponent wants to kill them, they will. they are just to easy to get rid of, and the totem synergy's are also just plain bad.
WTF did I just read? Did you suddenly forget about the existence of Searing Totem?
WTF did we just read indeed. Forgetting about searing totem is the least of the crimes in this paragraph
Much like how totems are just small wooden pillars In real life, shamans don't conjure the elements or evolve things in real life. Or exist, for that matter. By this logic, we should just delete the shaman class and half of the other ones with it :D
my point is that because totems are a thing in real life, then in the game they are the same thing, but with magic. we can't just change what totems are. if we wanted that, then blizzard would just introduce a new tribe.
but as you pointed out, shamans are not real, and even if they were, they would not conjure the elements. so in the game, they we can bend them to do what we want.
make sense?

Rejoice, for even in death, you have become children of Thanos.
the thing about shaman is that the hero power is random, not reliable, in my opinion it is just about the worst hero power. but i dont know how we could just 'fix' that. you would have to revamp the whole power, and that is very risky.
also one of the big reasons shaman is bad is because of the totem archetype. that is the worst tribe ever. its so bad for 2 reasons, one, its very expensive. all of the totem synergies require a plethora of totems, or a kind of miracle style deck. and it is just to much mana to make all the totems, have the stick, then have the totem synergy.

and the last big weakness for shaman, is the RNG. not just with making totems, but with things like evolve, deal 2-3 dmg, 3-6 dmg, gain 2-4 attack, or deal X damage randomly assigned. not to mention the number of random cards you are getting from hagatha. and hagatha is made worse with all the spells from poor archetypes for shaman (freeze, totem, murloc).
so to make a long post short, shaman is random, totems suck, and hero power is bad.
This really sums it up. My point was that a nerf to Flametongue would be dangerous regarding the overall class balance (hence the notion how poor Shaman performs in Standard - not just at the moment - with only a single viable deck being available) by basically killing any early board development. Since the departure of old Aggro Shaman T5 was, understandably, hesitant to give the class strong early game options such as Totem Golem or Whirling Zap-o-matic and I doubt they'll ever release new cards on a comparable power level. If they really wanted to nerf Even Shaman without breaking the class then Thing from Below has to be the prime target. Other archetypes aren't competitive enough, with Control Shaman being the worst since it's just too slow and lacks a real win condition (yeah, there is Malygos/Eureka, but it's just inferior to other Maly decks - the same issue which plagued Murloc/Quest Shaman when compared to Paladin)
In regards to the heropower, would it be over the top if they added the upgraded effect as permanent? As stated above, the Totems tend to get removed anyway and aren't a standalone archetype such as Murlocs etc. and Shaman would still be riddled with RNG.
Now that Flametongue got hit, this thread is kinda obsolete. I'm wondering if T5 are able to make use of the design space they now have in regards to powerful 1-drops for Shaman. Otherwise the class will probably fade away into obscurity, at least until April.

ITT: people who think Shamans are not real.
Which is actually rather surprising considering the number of people we see complaining about Even Shaman in Wild. o.O
Because it is played a lot in wild. https://www.vicioussyndicate.com/wild-vs-data-reaper-report-15
