On Tuesday, I dropped from rank 4 and 3 stars to rank 5 no stars. It's true that my opponents drew well and I wasn't having the best luck - but even my unfavored opponents were playing really well, always exerting pressure and making the most impactful plays they could. Yesterday and today I played a few games and sailed to rank 3, with like one loss. Even my mirror opponents seemed like they had just started playing the deck, totally off plays. Every player made at least two plays in the match which allowed me an easy win. Does the time of the month really make a big difference? Like over the course of a day? Or is MMR just in my favour?
Generally the only difference the day of the month would make is that towards the end faster decks start to become more popular to try to rank up quickly. Probably just luck.
I don't think there is much truth to it outside the first few days at the upper ranks where legend grinders are going back to legend. After the first few days it is basically the same.
My personal experience has been it's easier to climb at the beginning of season actually, couple days after ranks decay. It usually gets much harder in the middle of the month when everybody jumps in and starts playing net decks to climb the ladder so it becomes very difficult. By the end of the month, couple last days it is easier again as most people are already happy with their rank and are just messing around with meme decks. So I would recommend climbing ladder first/last 3/4 days of every month.
I've always found the beginning of the season to be the easiest time to rank up for me personally. I think it's because when the season rotates, a lot of people just start playing meme decks and less high tiered ones (possibly because they fool themselves into believing the climb will be higher later in the season? Who knows?).
From about the middle of the month onwards the panic begins to set in for players who haven't reached the next ledge yet and they then start to play more aggressive decks and look for ways to rank up quick before they run out of time. I imagine this part of the season is easiest for those playing counter-meta decks since they will start seeing their prey a lot more often and will rank up.
Finally at the end of the season you get the hard core players who have messed around all season and now just need to rank up before the end of the month hits. This is most definitely the toughest time to rank up because the majority of players will be trying to do it here.
So if you want an easy ride up the ladder, get it done in the first couple of days, I would say.
Was true before, now with the resets only resetting 5 ranks, there shouldn't be a difference. Takes some people awhile simply because they don't have the time to grind.
Interesting viewpoints, everyone seems to have a different theory. Maybe I got a weird patch of players changing to an unfamiliar deck.
I'd take the anecdotal viewpoints with a grain of salt. Statistically, there shouldn't be any dispute that climbing at a given rank is easier as the month goes on (unless you're going for a top 50 legend finish or something)
Consider that all legend players are kicked down to R3 at the end of each month. If you ladder at R3 on day 1, you're going to face 100% legend players. Ladder at R3 on the last day and a good portion of the legend players should have moved on to legend again. Meanwhile, you'll also run into players that came up from the ranks below returning to their original positions from before the rank rest
The idea of people memeing early on in the month makes absolutely no sense to me. Why not just rank up to your target rank (usually 5), then meme at the net (where you'll find memers all month around) or causal? Dumpstering your rank early on just means you'll need to "grind" more later
That said, I don't think 4 days (Tuesday-today) is long enough to have a noticeable impact in difficulty. There are other factors at play like time of day, meta shifts and of course, RNG

Yeah I always try to get to rank 5 as early as possible, and everyone I go up against seems to have the same idea.
The later you get into the season, the more players reach legend, meaning the average skill level at ranks 1-5 decreases as the season goes on. This is why the climb to legend becomes easier towards the end of the season.

It is still easier, but a lot less so than before the end-season demotion changes.
