The card names are green here because white text wouldn't work on our light background. Though everything here was also initially modeled off of World of Warcraft, so that is also why they are the exact same color codes as used in the WoW client :P
I prefer the white gems over what green would look like. White is a nice baseline that doesn't add too much to the majority of our collectible cards. It helps to not promote excitement by being neutral, kinda like how neutral cards in Hearthstone are very bland.

yeah I agree that it looking like a an empty crystal or something works for the base level cards. if it were green it may confuse people as well.
Common is white. Grey is vendor trash. There are no "uncommon" cards in HS. So the green wouldn't make sense. Flux already explained why Hearthpwn uses green names for common cards in decklists.
You can however make custom cards at hearthcards with a green gem if you would like to :) Look at the Hearthcards Tricks section in Presentation Tools 2.0.
why isn't the gem on common's green? I mean is it so they look as basic as possible and avoid confusion?
if it is following WoW though, surely the gem should be green? (the card names show up in green on here as well)
I think it must be to avoid confusion and show that these are the basic cards by being colourless.
What do you guys think?
