talks about whether one should disenchant his/her wild collection if one only plays Std. It brought up the following question: What do you think about the endurance of our wonderful game?
How many years from now will it exist? I for one never disenchanted any of my cards. Not even the common/rare fillers. Most probably I will never ever play these cards again (if I even have) but as a matter of principle I keep 2 cards of everything.
How sad would you be if at some point in the future, Blizz announces that our favorite passtime isn't worth their while anymore?
HS is the biggest digital card game ever, by a massive margin, and as long as it holds that title, they'll keep working on it. The three big physical CCGs have each been going for decades, so I don't see why HS can't do the same.
I think this could happen in a few years but right now Hearthstone is still a cash cow for blizzard. I don’t think there is a reason to stop this game for them.
This is definitely the "perfect world" scenario and I'd totally be game if this did happen but I feel Blizzard will continue milking Hearthstone to the point of destroying the game*. They will eventually come up with new modes like tournament mode, maybe some better solo content but I think they will only stop developing content for HS when mobile gaming dies down too, which is likely to be never.
*Example of game being destroyed is when there are 100+ expansions and game mechanics become to complex that there won't be any new players.
How sad would you be if at some point in the future, Blizz announces that our favorite passtime isn't worth their while anymore?
About the same as when I found out Sword Girls died. Or when Trickster died (though it seems to be back). I miss seeing Amy smash someone with a bike. I miss many of my old MUDs,
It sucks. But it's life. It's also the price you pay for online games like these. Though I do note that I don't exactly have my SNES and copy of Secret of Mana either.
I also note that the game surviving doesn't mean as much when you have no time to play. Lusternia is still around yet I have 0 time to ever touch that game again.
You invest time and money into a game for the enjoyment you get right now on it. Thus make sure you use that time and money wisely.
On the one hand, a card you never use until you stop playing the game is worthless. On the other, if I had the mentality of dusting all of my wild cards when rotation started, I would've been bored of the game and left during Un'Goro: I kept playing purely because I remembered Wild existed and found enjoyment there until Frozen Throne. Given that Hearthstone has beaten everything from Gwent to Fire Emblem Heroes to the entire NES/SNES lineup to #()$#) MTG (though heavily because there's no mobile version of MTGA) meant that I gained a lot from keeping my wild collection.
Put simply really REALLY think about what you actually need to enjoy yourself here. Are you fully SURE you hate Wild that much to never try it? If you do play only Standard, is there specifically a deck you MUST MUST have that requires THAT much burned dust from your collection that you KNOW you won't grow bored of after a week or so? You know you can treat old cards like a bank and just dust the ones you need right then to make That Deck, and leave the rest for later.
But whatever you do, just make sure you're enjoying yourself afterwards whereever you are.
And remember not everything is forever. This game can last 1 year or 20. It could last 100 but you stop playing after 1 year. It could end in one month but someone makes a private server to keep it going anyway. This isn't an investment. This is entertainment. If you are avoid about your time/money lost, that's what jobs and stocks are for. If you aren't having fun, make it fun.
HS will last decades. Just look at MTG. (and yes it deserves to be compared to it, simply by the high standard the game has launched in, and maintained over the years).
I mean sure, in the future HS might slowly fade towards a more fringe, but still very dedicated (and paying) player base, which will still justify the development and upkeep cost for Blizzard.
For HS to really take a hit, it'll take something truly revolutionary in the genre. Not just another "me too" game that follows the same formula. Something more like how HS was a massive evolution over MGT by going full digital.
I tend to think it'll be a long time before Blizzard stops releasing Hearthstone content, and even after that, there is a high chance they just leave the servers running. Folks still playing SC 1 and WC 3.
I think they still have good margin to completely overhaul the game and keep it going for decades.
So far, it's lived almost exclusively upon powercreep, distributed on a floating basis.
I doubt they are nowhere near a point where their investment is not retributed with huge incomes...
With the exception of the odd/even mechanic, I think the power level of this years expansions have been a lot lower than before. We haven't had a tier one "beats almost everything" decks since pre-nerf witchwood.
Good question! I find myself wondering about that a lot.
One reason I see that they could discontinue HS, would be that they launch HS 2.0, reviewing the core mechanics of the game and the classic card set. But then again, is that even likely? Given that they have been adjusting the classic set quite a lot, and that the core mechanics has proven to be versatile enough, I think not.
But really, the only valid reason would be if the popularity of the game goes down, and that really depends how Blizzard adjusts the new user experience in the future. But given the current market value of this game, I trust that Blizzard will react quickly in time.
So all in all, I give HS a solid 10 years lifetime from now.

Even if hearthstone will somehow become number 2(3,4) it won't die. HOTS is quite alive even if it is obvious that it will never match LoL or Dota2
HS is one hell of a cash cow, Blizzard is not market-naive in ANY WAY, and they seem to be thinking long term with the introduction of varied renewable experiences like standard, wild, and the rotating years.
This game is not going away any soon, you can pretty much be certain of it.

The three big?
MtG on top (When it comes to age, audience, quality, revenue, etc.) and what comes next?
I have never seen another good CCG. What have I missed?
I think this could happen in a few years but right now Hearthstone is still a cash cow for blizzard. I don’t think there is a reason to stop this game for them.
I hope its not just a "cash cow" cause in Marketing terms that means the profit has stagnated and aint rising. I prefer looking at HS at the "star" product and stuff like WOW is the real cash cow as in its the product that funds all others. cause a cash cow aint rising it means sooner or later will start its declining path and into the Rabid dog status which means the company will either sell it or discontinues it.
considering the WOW subscrition, age etc i feel like its the cash cow and HS is the star even if it generates a massive income i still think it has moments of growth which of course depends on exp hype and how good and fun the meta is making ppl buy more packs.
Look at Magic and their products Magic Online was the digital game for ages, and now it is collapsing cause of Arena. Its devs are already creating a method in which ppl can get a compensation for Magic Online when it closes and such compensation will come in the Arena format. Therefor i dont think Blizzard (a successful company with no end in sight) will screw up and one way or another it will compensate its gamers if something happens to HS, which it wont for at least 5 years (random number)

There is one wildcard though:
*points to Activision* By how the recent stories show, they've stopped being content letting Blizzard go and make money and seem to be butting in with their usual annoying way. I don't think it's safe to assume Blizzard will keep doing what they've always done anymore.
If HS has a chance, it'll because it's an already established "Live Service" cash cow with loot boxes, a mobile presence and a very low cost to produce. The only thing it lacks is an entree fee which is probably impossible to implement.
So I'm hoping it's left as is while the rest of the franchises, sadly, get slaughtered.
The three big physical CCGs have each been going for decades,
What is the third big CCG?

Start of Year: Provoke the failure of 3 expansions, force nerfs on otherwise balanced cards, bring deckbuilding to an all-time low and get rotated one year earlier for being such a threat to the game's health. - Genn and Baku's historical entry on the White Book of Shit Design, shortly before retiring unpunished
It doesn't matter what we think. As long as Hearthstone continues to generate revenue, Blizzard will continue to support it. We all know by now that "money makes the world go 'round".

Why they drop HS ? It still make them multi millions a year and a pretty low maintenance game compares to things like WOW
