I'm not an oldschool player, but I've gone through bouts of absolutely loving this game. When Boomsday launched, it was so much fun. I preordered both sets and trialled heaps of different playstyles. Got down to about rank 6 that month, which is my record.
Since then, I haven't played ranked much. Feels like you must use tier 1 decks (or decks built to take down those decks) which was fun for a while, but then I found myself getting real cranky when I lost in ranked. I'm a pretty laid back bloke, and usually when I lose at a game, I laugh, think of how to improve, and say good game. In Hearthstone I call my opponent all sorts of nasty names and remark how lucky they were that game (at my phone, not the actual person).
So yeah, after Boomsday settled, I've stuck to casual. I'm generally happy whether I win or lose there, and mainly play to get my daily quests. That said, it is starting to feel stale. When the Hallow bundle came out, I initially ignored it. Today I purchased it. Got Tess Greymane (yay for legendary!). Decided to throw together a janky rogue thief deck. Went up against 7 tier1 & 2 decks in casual, plus 1 odd mage. Was an absolute bore watching my shitty, experimental deck get annihilated, especially by predictable combos. Mage still destroyed me, but at least that game was a bit of fun--it was an earlier one, while I was still tweaking the deck.
So my gamble led to a shitty session of Hearthstone. I love trying out new playstyles, even if they are useless in the grand scheme of the game. I play for fun, and it feels like that's devoid from the game right now. I had a fun janky mage deck that could win occasionally, now severely weakened (probably useless) due to the Mana Wyrm nerf. Seems absolutely stupid they nerfed that card when there are so many more powerful, meta-defining cards out there.
Am wondering how I can get that fun vibe back. Is the game far more fun and experimental with each new release? As I said, I loved it when Boomsday came out (I started playing right after Witchwood release). Should I take a break until the next set comes out? I do not hate the game, nor want to ditch it forever, I just crave to have some fun with it again!
This isn't really a new thread, but that's ok. For now you can't get the fun back. It's been the same decks the last 6 months. Boomsday changed nothing other than adding a boring control warrior. Game is in a bad spot now. Take a break until the next expansion. In the meantime, check out Magic Arena and Artifact when it comes out. This game is beyond stale.
I enjoyed Arena last year, but got over it. I was never much of a fan of MtGO, but always loved the casual DotP games.I actually went from Arena to Hearthstone. Escaping the land system was nice.
I prefer MtG in paper. Haven't played the new Ravnica set, but not working thus Friday night, so will indulge in a draft.
I'm mainly using my phone for games right now, as my gaming computer is having some issues. I keep games away from the work computer. Will Artifact be on Android? I've been enjoying Eternal too. Still, I've had the most fun with HS. I want it back! Might just have to wait for next set.
In casual, you have an MMR (matchmaking rank). You start with the noobs. The more you win instead of losing in casual, the higher your MMR will be. Win enough and you'll only be matched with people using tier 1 decks. If you like, you can dumpster your MMR by conceding to return to only playing bad players
You can also check out this hearthpwn thread for meme players. I don't know much about them other than the fact that they are a large group who like to play meme decks together. I'm not a member because the concept is against my beliefs as a player so if you want details, you'll have to ask them
It's hard to give tips on how to have fun with the game. Each person enjoys different aspects of the game and in different ways. I personally never felt bad about facing netdecks and tier 1 things on casual or ladder so I can't really help
Right now, I'm having fun with various druids. The class is so broken right now that you can stick whatever meme cards in there and win often enough. Today I was trying out a quest druid I found on this site, yesterday I was playing with C4 and packs druid, then there's my personal pet projects with dollmaster psychemelon and another that's taunt druid without the oakheart package to raise consistency. I suppose these are all super expensive so it's not an approach for everyone
I thought I'd never make it to rank 5. Then I hit legend. It feels good. When I get to where you're at usually I'll go in and start mass disenchanting cards I know that aren't good. Try and get that Legendary you been waiting to play. Get those couple other good cards to finish another good deck you have. the fun starts over again. You get to rank 5 and it feels good again. Then the next season starts and you're back cursing at every single deck you lose to. Start telling Hearthstone that it's cheating and just wants you to lose.
I also use the deck tracker. Look at your win/loss percentages. Compare those to what decks you play most against, then tech against that Druid or Warlock deck that's giving you trouble. Take out those few cards that are just trash, and lose you games. Spend a little dust on 1 card that will improve your win rate. The fun doesn't actually start until you hit rank 5. You're just getting started.
Oh, and Tess Greymane sucks bad. Never seen any good deck with her. Even though I like the card and tried it plenty of times.
I have to agree. The current meta is super top heavy. Almost all the decks require specific expensive legendaries. If you’re just here to jank and have fun, it’s difficult to rise on the ladder. Personally, I love really long drawn out masochistic control (Odd Warrior) mirrors. I’m apologize for being the very problem you’ve come to hate.

Ironically I am with you on the Casual-Train at the moment. I Reached rank 1 on the second day of this season, so I figured that was this month and next month's ranking out the way, so playing casual has been a hell of a lot more enjoyable with the stress removed from the over-competitive nature of ranked mode.
That said... I have been rather surprised to see the number of people who play decks like Zoolock or Odd Rogue in Casual. I don't mind seeing them - since it helps me test my meme decks against the "current meta" - but more that I don't really know what you can get out of playing those sort of decks in casual mode, as I really only see them as ways to get your rank up quickly on ladder in an easy mode.
It's somewhat bemusing to notice, really. Fortunately, I see a lot more janky Bomb-hunters and Tempo Mages desperately trying to make a 2-mana Wyrm work somehow, so I do get some variety at least! Lol!
I felt the same at the beginning of Doomsday, which I never felt before. Playing decks which I don't find fun just to stay competitive, staying on the treadmill of Rank 5 to Legend month after month, and there have been very few cards from the last two expansions with a flavour I actually like.
So what did I do? Stopped caring about rank, stopped caring about playing decks I hate, I dusted my entire collection and crafted my 3 favourite decks in 100% golden (Wild Dragon Control Priest, Renolock and Renounce Lock, and golden Whizbang the Wonderful just for the hell of it), and I have a hoard of 160k dust to upgrade them with any future golden cards from newer expansions.
It's a pretty extreme reaction, I know. And I'm certainly not suggesting to anyone to disenchant their collection, haha. But this is what worked for me. I play a lot more casually, playing only the decks I enjoy, and I don't have to spend a single £ to continue enjoying the game. My dust and any gold earned between expansions should be able to sustain me.

As for OP, I'm still having fun playing Egg Paladin, my Even Dragon Paladin and of course Brian Kibler's Tespionage Rogue (I unfortunately don't have Tess Greymane so I just swapped her with one Augmented Elekk) you should really try it out link to his video here, I also really wanna take the plunge into wild with a Reno Quest Priest that focuses on Weasel Tunneler to just annoy the shit out of my opponent xD.
That fun vibe can be brought back if you're willing to go down the dreaded RNG route. Like the aforementioned Tespionage Rogue and of course my favourite deck ever Evolve Shaman (In wild. Standard evolve shaman sucks hard). Or you can wait for he next expan, maybe till the rotation so the broken deathknights go away. All up to you.

Yeah, maybe I had won too many games leading up to my playing with Tess. Not sure if I'd go to the massive effort to find people to play with. Like I said, I'm casual. I like to play when I feel like a game, not plan to play at a certain time.
Druid does seem amazing. I just lake most the power cards. I've got none of the top tier epics, and the only legends I have are Floop and his Goop (Goop's golden!). Might be more attractive come rotation. I've had no luck playing druid at all with my cards. I've got about 4k dust, but want to save it for next expansion, or to craft things which are headed for the Hall of Fame.
Side question: if you have a golden version of a card that enters the HoF, do you get a super hit of dust?
Oh, and Tess Greymane sucks bad. Never seen any good deck with her. Even though I like the card and tried it plenty of times.
Not wrong. She looked so cool at first, but really, she's like a shitty Shudderwock (which I don't have, either). She'd be amazing in wild, if she were a priest priest card. I seem to either have her in my opener, and never steal anything decent, or steal and play good shit, but not see her.

Might have to take a gander at that Tespionage deck and try it out. Really want to have fun with the card! I've slowly been purchasing Deathknights with my dust. Such cool cards.
At this point, I share the same emotions you have towards HS; I love the game, the vibe I get from playing it, but it's getting very frustrating and increasingly hard to have fun with it. So I chose to do something I never do; ignore my desire to rank up. I crafted the decks I found most fun, like the Thief-archetype of Rogue, with Academic and Elekk, and Spell Hunter. Where I would've previously made decks that were competitive, like Odd Warrior, I now negate my inner self and play the decks I know I'll have fun with. And surprisingly, both have been doing well for me. Spell Hunter is a sleeper, and is being overshadowed by the other strong Hunter-decks. And Espionage is just pure fun.
So, while I'm not ranking up with the pace I want to, I've embraced the fact that that playstyle is no longer viable for me, on this game. I changed my mindset from seeing Ranked Ladder as the cesspool of tryhards it is, and to be that one of few players to take fun decks to the ladder. For the next rotation, there will be fun decks that are also competitive. It's always been like this. But for now, it's too stale.
Seems like a good way to go. Just play ranked and not care. I guess, being above rank 15, it really doesn't matter which way I go. (well, to 15 is obviously better!)
Side question: if you have a golden version of a card that enters the HoF, do you get a super hit of dust?
Yup, you get dust equal to the golden card's value. Just note that it won't refund you for extra plain copies if it already refunded you for the golden versions (it's capped by the number of copies you can put in a deck). Gloop will never get HOF'd though, if that's what you're waiting for. Only classics and basics get HOF'd
I havent played since april it looks like. I just reinstalled now and played a few games and i just can't get back into it as nothings changed. I am still seeing mostly what Witchwood brought on with a few new additions. I logged in and got my free packs and gold card and i think thatll be it for me until next expansion. MTG:A has been ok for filling the gap for now.
Not every expansion is going to push the game through for people, and i've been here since beta. I can understand this completely.

Cheers for that info. I was more saving the dust (and potential dust) to craft a golden legendary, if it was to go to HoF. No HoF transfers have happened since I started playing. But, I have crafted Ragnoros for wild. Amazing card! Would love to have crafted a golden one for free instead!
Boomsday was just a miserable failure that failed to shake up the game. Every fucking Druid I face plays Oaken Summons that summons a Ironwood Golem. Every single Hunter tries to drop down a Devilsaur Egg and then trigger it with Play Dead. Every Warlock plays 2 Happy Ghouls on turn 3-4.
It's going to be difficult getting useful advice for what makes the game fun when 1) half the players are salty because they claim the meta is boring or in a terrible shape (when in reality it is the most balanced it has been since the games inception). The reality of the matter is, it is really up to the individual to determine what is fun in the game and do that. Some only play ranked play, some only play arena, some play casual, some play wild, some experiment with new and interesting decks and some use net decks. Some players are very competitive and others are more relaxed. Some players log in to complete their quests and maybe grind for their 30 wins a day and others will spend hours playing for no other reason than to play. Some people get enjoyment by plugging into Twitch and talking to people as they stream, and others will flip on Youtube, Twitch or Netflix in the background as they play.
My best advice would be to go out and experiment with what you find fun, whether it means you play for 6 hours a day, or 6 minutes a day. At the end of the day, the only one it affects is you, and no amount of people telling you to do one thing or another in threads is going to change that.
Personally, my playing of Hearthstone varies. Sometimes I log in my main account to just do quests, other days I"ll be on for 3 hours just goofing around and getting some wins (and plenty of losses too). If I start getting overly salty, I close the game down and do something else. Sometimes I log into one of my alt accounts (I recently created a new one just to rank up from 50-25 and see how Blizzard did with that section of the game for new players) and play on them for a while. When all that gets boring or I get overly salty, I log off and go play Minecraft, Halo, Fortnite or one of my other many games to choose from, or just chill and watch netflix or youtube and play some solitaire/free cell/etc.

Go play another game until the next expansion. You'll have less fun with any game if it's the only one you ever play. I know "games as a service" tricks people into thinking they can only play 1 game and they have to play it all day...but you don't!
Oddly enough, since posting, I've found myself enjoying the game a bit more than before. A couple of days I even spent almost 2 hours playing, and enjoying it!
I actually cracked Face Hunter as I was opening Witchwood boosters after the promo. I was at 12 packs without a legendary, so figured it would be decent for the timer (28 more, worst case). Tried the thief deck again and went much better. Tess still sucks. That said, in one game I did Tess me back a King Crush for the win!
As someone who lives in Darwin (37°C days that are humid as buggery) right now, I won't go outside unless you're paying me. Even then, I'd probably rather get another job.

Yep the meta sucks right now. I barely play too. NEVER played this little of HS and I've played since launch!
Seems like a good way to go. Just play ranked and not care. I guess, being above rank 15, it really doesn't matter which way I go. (well, to 15 is obviously better!)
For example :
Legend with : S65 Freeze Mage, S57 Maly Gonk Druid, S57 "Okay" Shaman, S53 Boom-zooka Hunter, S53 Maly Tog Druid, S52 Wild Tog Druid ft.Blingtron, S50 Quest Rogue, S49 Dead Man's Warrior, S41 Wild Clown Fiesta Druid, S41 Hadronox Jade Druid, S40 Wild OTK Dragon Druid, S35 SMOrc Shaman, S33 Jade Druid, S22 Control Priest, S19 Control Priest
It is so boring. It is so sad.
The Lich King

Go play another game until the next expansion. You'll have less fun with any game if it's the only one you ever play. I know "games as a service" tricks people into thinking they can only play 1 game and they have to play it all day...but you don't!
Go outside.
