The new cards are shit. Open now asap to get mana wyrm dust.
This. People keep saying "you don't know for sure they won't appear in a meta deck", but sometimes you just know. The Boogeymonster in theory could find a place in a meta deck too, but this is reality, it won't.
Well Tome of Intellect might make it into quest mage, but I doubt it would make Quest mage into a meta deck...
I, like you, have a massive card collection. I'm not sure how much dust or gold you are currently sitting on, or how many packs you have waiting to be opened but it doesn't sound like either way it will affect you too much. If you are set on saving the dust you currently have (and will get from opening the classic packs) then I would save them until they announce the new cards are released (I think it was sometime in November they were coming out? - I can't remember exactly) and then open them. It increases your odds of getting them, and you can still use any dust you get to craft them if you want them. You really aren't out anything if you don't open them now, and the odds are about the same whether you open them for a mana wyrm now, or open them later for the new cards.
I always thought that packs (like lootboxes in Overwatch and HotS) are generated on acquisition. Which means you won't find any new cards in them.
They are not... storing that much stuff on server for no apparent reason is very inefficient...
As I said Overwatch does exactly that. When new skins were added to the “classic skin“ pool, old classic boxes did not contain any new items. I just guessed it would work the same, because both are Blizzard/Activision games I guess.
You are right though, it's a lot of unnecessary information to save, Overwatch probably just flagged old boxes to not contain new items instead of generating the box on acquisition.

Well it is much easier to make "old boxes" not have new skins, just have a number stored of how many old boxes players have... It will be a single number per player instead of storing ALL the items that the boxes have inside them...
P.S. I'm software engineer myself. So yeah what seems like common sense from physical world point of view, doesn't always work so well in digital world...

Even if the cards are being used, it's a common card, 2 for 80 dust. Right now, you get better cards per pack, so open them as soon as possible. The crappy ones you will get soon enough.

Thats not necessarelly true for people with all the commons. ANY common I open now will be 20 dust (except Mana Wyrms). For me a Sorceress Aprendice and a Thrallmar Farseer are equally irrelevant.

Point is those 6 new commons are also just 20 dust for people with big collection who don’t need budget choices...
No, the new commons are NOT dust. That is the point. They actually add to your collection rather than being only useful as dust.
Or do you not have a full collection of Classic commons because you keep dusting ones you think are bad? That's weird.
I have 4 copies of some commons because I only dust them with the button or when they get nerfed (I don't even go to trouble of dusting golden crap) But on the other hand I don't care about having "full collection", but trying to get potential dust value out of nerfed cards while you can seems reasonable to me...

I'd just open them now. The new cards will see pretty much no play anyway so what's the point unless you want to have those cards.
