I've played this game since closed beta and loved it for many years. I've spend countless hours on this game and spent more than I'd like to admit. I've slowly decreased my playing time the past few expansions because they really didn't excite me and the meta was just bleh. Did this expac change anything or am I in for another disappointment. I was really hoping this game would change, but it changed for the worst. I can go in to more detail in this is people are interested. Let me know your opinions on the games state and if it's worth returning or not. Thanks!
You can try to play the true meme decks like piñata ressumoner priest or elekk + scroll or maybe go to wild and play some yogg shaman.
Another thing is to do challenges, for example win 5 games with a complete autofilled deck, or put 20 druid cards in a deck and autofill the rest and try to get rank legend with it (yep thats how strong druid is right now)
Haha, as fun as that sounds I think I'll pass. I never been much for the meme decks because I liked playing competitively. But getting legend nowadays just seems ridiculous compared to what it use to. I have been watching videos, so I'm not completely out of the dark. I do agree with druids' power atm. Getting more armor than old control warriors is pretty ridiculous. In response to kam, I don't think mage was ever a problem besides mech mage and oldschool freeze mage, which is no longer a thing. Imo, mana wyrm needed a nerf long ago. I'm glad it got hit finally.
Whether or not people enjoy metas is purely subjective. There's always been a huge pile of salty "this meta is terrible" threads littered about every expansion. Even I'm guilty of being part of the babyrage crowd during certain metas but I love the current one. It just goes to show that asking individual people how good the meta is is pretty meaningless
Maybe you should give us some background on yourself like when did you quit and why. What classes and archetypes you like to play and what you don't like seeing from the opponents or meta
Telling us you're a spike (generally someone who likes competitive decks and not memeing) is a good start. If you're a spike that enjoys skillful decks, now is a pretty good time to play. Most of the top decks right now are tough to pilot and aside from the issue of polarization, skill matters more than ever. Combo decks right now are king. Aggro is also in a good spot
What I'm trying to say is that you'll have a good time if you're a druid main. If you don't like druid, don't worry. There's a few decks (most notably egg hunter and zoo) out there that can really give it a hard time and are decent in other matchups
They didn't "nuke" the Mage class. Mana Wyrm was abusive to a degree. I don't agree with the nerf, however, Tempo and Burn Mage got almost the same treatment as a number of other aggressive decks. Warrior and Druid both had core cards of their own "nuked". Some people were annoyed when Fiery War Axe got nerfed, and not many were as irritated when Innervate got nerfed. Saying that Mage got nuked is the same as saying the game gets nuked whenever cards get rotated out. Again, it's only a matter of time before Rogue sees a nerf or rotation of Shadowstep/Preparation.
Besides, OP was asking for you to help them get back into the game. You're not helping.

NightCrawler is pretty much correct with everything they've said here. The meta is pretty diverse right now, with there being several decks played in Ranked by every class. There's a ton of variety, and most matches will feel different from one another. Druid is a bit obnoxious to play against, so if you like Druid, you'll enjoy the game a bit more than normal, though this is just an assumption about how you might play in general. It's worth giving it your best shot, absolutely. Don't let people dissuade you of all this. The people who want to ruin your perception of things here will chime in about how they feel it's a bad time, saying the meta is awful, yet don't quite remember when TGT was in full swing.
Thinking back I think after un' goro the game turned worse for me, but I did play every expansion for some amount of time. Paladin is and will always be my favorite class. The joy it brought to me in vanilla I can't even explain. The hero power, the heals, I loved all of it. I think I was always more of a mid-range player, some decks that come to mind besides paladin were tempo rogue, totem shaman, and death rattle hunter to name a few (even though this could be argued as smorc.) I think they completely ruined that style game play, you just don't see mid-range at all anymore. It hasn't been a thing for a while. Don't get me wrong, I played my far share of other decks, I'm close to 3k ranked wins. Long games and turns does intrigue me because usually the most skillful player wins. So, as far as your description goes you're making me want to take it serious and play again. I always loved old school handlock matchups, where usually the best player won. Knowing the best time to use spells and board clears lead to victory. The whole skill thing, I think, is what ruined hearthstone for me. Even if you were the best player rng had a huge favor most of the time in the later expacs. Now, I understand that is hearthstone's thing and that will never change, but if what you're saying is true, than I might reconsider playing. Thanks for the message and your time. I appreciate it.

Well if you're hyped about skill based games, let me first forewarn you about polarization. Remember freeze mage vs control warrior? It sucks to be the freeze mage and the control warrior doesn't require skill to win. That's a polarized matchup. Before the nerfs, polarization was the worst it's ever been with many 30-70 matchups across the field. This is a consequence of a combo meta, I suppose. The good news is that quest rogue was one of the main causes of this (the other culprits being druids and odd warrior) and now that it's been heavily nerfed the situation should become better. However, most people are not bothered by meta polarization. Pre-Quest nerf Un'goro was one of the most polarized metas of its time. If it didn't bother you back then, it probably won't now
Prince Keleseth is the other main offender of RNG. However, he's only very impactful in zoolock and even then he's not as good as he used to be with Patches rotated out and shadowstep/prince rogue powercreeped. The statistical winrate when drawn of this card has fallen a lot since its glory days
The only high tier paladin right now is simple odd paladin. I'm no paladin expert but rumor has it that the class is pretty unstable right now. The giggling inventor nerf helped this class out a lot by taking blood knight out of the meta. Since the nerfs, there's lots of pro players experimenting with even, control, midrange, otk builds with and without mechs. A new high tier deck from the class might emerge in a few weeks
Tempo rogue = odd rogue; handlock = evenlock. Both of these are high skill decks and the better player should win the mirror pretty often. Evenlock benefited greatly from the nerfs and is a stellar choice for laddering right now. Tempo rogue is favored vs three of the tier 1 decks right now in evenlock, zoo and hunter
Also, I wouldn't call the midrange archtype dead by any means. There's many forms of midrange hunter playable this meta (secret, spell, egg, just vanilla "midrange"). I'd say egg hunter is the most powerful one right now. Some people classify this as a "combo" deck because you're comboing your play dead with your cubes and eggs but whether or not you agree with this classification, the deck is definitely also midrange. It's also yet another deck that's hard to play correctly, possibly the hardest according to a pro or two. Zoolock, odd paladin and even shaman can also be classified as "fast" midrange decks by some people's standards (these are no face hunters!)
Other skillful yet top tier decks include most druids, shudderwock OTK shaman, Quest rogue (now nerfed but people are still testing it) and odd warrior. Togwaggle Druid is generally accepted to be the current most difficult deck to play and personally I agree, so if you're looking for a challenge, you can have fun with that
Hmm, that all sounds very interesting to me. I know some of the decks you mention, but others I have no idea about. I decided about an hour ago to re-download and use an odd paladin deck I used from last season and I haven't lost a match yet. Wondering about a couple tech cards I can put it. I hate this deck, but as I said, I love paladin. This midrange hunter deck you talk about intrigues me the most and I'd love if you'd pm me a decklist. I reckon keleseth with receive a nerf in the coming days. I do remember freeze vs control warrior. I use to just concede at the start of the match because it was basically impossible to win. But I don't think there was a ever a hard counter that bad. I could be wrong, but thanks everyone for the info and enlightenment. You've definitely sparked back up my interest in this game.
As far as techs go, the general rule of thumb is to remove any MCT, blood knights and mossy horror you see from pre-nerf lists because those are anti giggling inventor cards (The one exception is that egg decks should keep running 1 mossy because it's good synergy). Weapon destruction is only relevant for slower decks. Silence is okay; its great vs egg hunter but near useless against anything else in most decks. For odd paladin specifically, you can run a copy or two of Void Ripper if you find a lot of druids and doomsayers. IMO, teching is not so good in the current meta. The diversity is so high that it's often better to use your cardslots to synergize and do powerful things with your own deck than worry about what your opponent is doing
As for polarization, I believe Quest rogue vs tempo mage matchup came close to freeze mage levels but thankfully both those decks are nerfed. Personally, I feel that it does not need to be a 5% match for it to be a problem. 30/70 is enough to make it feel bad because some amount of skill is removed from the game. Of course, if you don't feel this way, all the better for you
Here are the what each of the 3 midrange hunters typically look like. I've selected lists are teched correctly for the post-nerf meta. The first one is the egg hunter I was talking about. Don't be afraid to give the other ones a try as well
@OP: if you are asking us to help come back to your "favorite" game, then this is NOT your favorite game at all.
I have long since moved on from HS and never regretted it (having played since closed beta too). There are many other games out there, not necessarily card-related ones, that are really cool and worth spending time with.
For example, why should I ruin my good mood by playing this "rng shitfest" when I can play any other strategy game in which I can actually control what I do or be given the tools to at least manage what I don't?
I suggest you try to spend your free time in other games and see how that feels for a while.

You misunderstand. What I wrote is a "blame the game" only in your view, probably because of some deeply rooted frustration about this game (most likely).
I simply expressed my view and the fact that the OP kind of contradicts himself. You can't say a game is your favorite if you need help coming back to play it.
Also, the group therapy thread is useless for me - haven't played HS in over a year and I don't have any frustrations to vent there. Actually I felt much better during this time instead of getting mad because of stuff I cannot properly control in game.
I suggest you stop putting words into other people's mouths. Just because you think I blame the game, it doesn't mean you are right. The proof is easy - I stopped playing it long ago. Maybe you should try to build a comprehensive post for the "group therapy" thread... Maybe it'll help you cope.
Why would anyone keep playing something that makes them angry or sad is beyond me... but to each their own. Everyone is free to waste their lives/time however they see fit.
Honestly I haven't enjoyed Hearthstone for about a year now simply because its a very very dull experience. there's always gonna be that one cancer deck everyone hates and you're always gonna have something to be salty about but when it comes down to it the game is always the exact same experience. Hearthstone is one of the easiest card games to get into as it has very little mechanics unlike other card games. Blizzard tries to implement new unique things but the way their game fundamentally is designed limits their design space drastically and I feel like other card games offer a new more interesting concept. if you haven't enjoyed hearthstone anymore the past few expansions that probably also means it's not actually your favourite game anymore and I recommend you don't get back into it. I'm disappointed every time I do and honestly I'm not far from ditching this game forever.

You're the one putting words in people's mouths. Just because you don't personally find something enjoyable doesn't mean others can't. The game is far from perfect, but I still genuinely enjoy it and nothing about it makes me sad. If a game upsets me, then I wouldn't play it
I can understand people who take breaks from the game while still visiting the forums to post constructive criticism, hoping that the game will improve so that they can enjoy it again. You're not being constructive and you clearly have no intentions of ever picking the game up again. Why are you here?
What's really sad is someone that's been sticking around in the forums of a game they passionately dislike for over a year spreading bad vibes and hating on others. Of course, you're also free to waste your time and life however you see fit
I've played this game since closed beta and loved it for many years. I've spend countless hours on this game and spent more than I'd like to admit. They just nuked the Mage Class for no reason, so if you hate Mage you'll love the current meta.

Pretty much all Even decks play as Midrange, and can be adjusted with faster or slower setups.
And Even Paladin is definitely an underrated deck right now, much like Even Shaman.
Evenlock is definitely similar to old Handlock, and equally strong.
