Top 4: 1. League of Explorers: The best meta. It was the best era in terms of gameplay and experimenting; also introduced a great mechanic: Discover. Great solo content. 2. Whispers of the Old Gods: Dark/serious theme. The impacts of the Old Gods and build-arounds. Gameplay was awesome to me at the time. 3. Journey to Un'Goro: Great meta. Too many great epic cards. Primal theme. DINOSAURS! 4. Knights of the Frozen Throne: Dark/serious theme. Hero cards. Another good meta. Great lore characters with rich background. Also it was interesting to see the twisted death knight versions of our beloved heroes.
Bottom 4: 12. Goblins vs Gnomes: The most annoying set for me. RNG-Heavy. Too many bad cards and a handful unbalanced cards that were too good. 11. The Grand Tournament: Failed mechanics (especially Joust). Mysterious Challenger was a pain in the azz. Actually I liked the experimenting aspect of this set but the cards were weak overall... 10. Mean Streets of Gadgetzan: Awful rock-paper-scissors meta. Too many annoying decks. Jades, Patches the Pirate... I only liked the overall theme of the tri-class factions and the futuristic Gadgetzan. 9. One Night in Karazhan: The best class at the time became even better after this set which is not cool. Didn't affect the meta positively. Alright solo content but the heroic mode was too easy compared to the previous ones.
Also: 5. Kobolds & Catacombs: Dungeonesque feel. Great meta. Epic card quality. Dungeon Run! 6. Blackrock Mountain: Fiery theme. DRAGONS! Loved the solo content. Great lore characters... 7. Witchwood: Dark theme. Loved the Rush mechanic better than Charge. Even/odd stuff is cool. Custom classes in Monster Hunt deserve at least a mention. 8. Curse of Naxxramas: Another dark/serious theme. Nice solo content. Kel'Thuzad as a host was hilarious! (Not a fan of the meta and pre-nerf Undertaker though.)
I'm hopeful for The Boomsday Project as well. Not a huge fan of the overall theme but I'm ok with that as long as the gameplay is good and the meta isn't dull. New mechs and the magnetic keyword look good as well. And I can't wait for the puzzles!
i dont know why people love k&c so much. it broke the game with OP cards that were zero fun to play against and completely unfair mana cheating for some classes, while other classes were completely useless and saw zero play. k&c was one of the least fun metas i played only topped by undertaker hunter and the time where 5 druid decks were tier S and everything else had a below 50% wr
9. One Night in Karazhan: The best class at the time became even better after this set which is not cool. Didn't affect the meta positively. Alright solo content but the heroic mode was too easy compared to the previous ones.
you are gonna love the coming expansion then. most nerfed class in the history of hearthstone, tier 1 or at the very least high tier 2 in any meta since shamanstone (18 months ago) currently featuring some of the most frustrating decks this game has ever seen - better give it some of the most broken class cards, because why not :)
1. Whispers of the Old Gods BY FAR. Most fun time to play, excellent thematically, strong and viable old gods, who are actual warcraft characters and not random made up hs characters. Everyone got a C'Thun starter pack to taste the flavor of the expansion. Can't describe how good that time was.
2. Probably League of explorers. Discover mechanic was new addition at that time and it was actually fun and healthy for the game... now its just too overused. Reno, elise. Fun times as well.
3. Probably Curse of Naxxramas. Was the first expansion hs ever had, the power level was very high. Many of the cards are still videly used in wild. But most of all it was a blast experience. Single-player mode with pretty high difficulty. Best adventure hs ever had, rest not even close, even lich king. Although knights of the frozen throne is a close contender for 3rd place if you think about it. Hero cards are great, adventure and thematics pretty good as well.
Worst.
1. Mean Streets of Gadgetzan. Hand buff mechanic failed instantly (but during pre-release grimy goons were the gang i was most scared of). Instead, we got PATCHES THE PIRATE which enabled, The Most Degenerate hs deck ever created - Pirate warrior. So fun legitimately dying on t3-4. Some are hating on jade druid but i believe it is not nearly as bad for the game as pirate warrior. At least vs jade you could actually have some time to play your stuff.
2. The Grand Tournament. Inspire mechanic overall failed spectacularly even though there were couple of strong cards which used it. Dr. 6 Who am i? None of your buisness created 2nd Most Degenerate deck hs ever had, secret paladin. Like look at these two, compare them: Mysterious ChallengerSubject 9 and tell me that dr 6 do not deserve a nerf.
3. Black rock mountain. Dragon theme, which was the main theme of the adventure failed yet again until more stronget support cards were introduced in later expansions. Instead we got boring adventure which was not nearly as good as naxx and ridiculous flamewanker which many people hate even today. Close contender for 3rd worst expansion are gvg because of incredible power creep (even more than naxx) and karazhan.
Top #1 TGT - because burning up secret paladin tokens to a crisp with wild pyromancer and fatiguing them out is fun
Top #2 KFT - because doing dirty broken things consistently is fun, the theme was not bad and Dead Man's Hand is one of my favorite cards
Top #3 Vanilla? - I wasn't around for it but there was a vanilla brawl once and I really, really enjoyed it. A lot of my other favorite cards are classic
Worst #1 KnC - because the recruit mechanic amplifies the effects of draw RNG in the game, making skill less rewarding. Also, the introduction of Kingsbane shat all over wild mode
Worst #2 Karazhan - Barnes was the only really impactful card from this expansion and he's the devil
Worst #3 MSG - the attrition archetype ceased to work from this expansion onwards FeelsBadMan
My predictable opinionated list would probably be:
Best 3 would have to be Old Gods, Un'goro, and Knights of the Frozen Throne
Simply put, WOG had one of the most diverse meta's in the game, which each class having at least 1 viable deck, even if it wasn't Tier 1.
Un'goro, while not the best balanced meta, and also while having all but 1 of the quests fall flat (at that time), still provided cards to fuel a slightly slower meta where nearly all classes had options in either ago or midrange potential. (the cards were also a lot of fun to me! ^_^)
And of course KFT provided us with the Death Knights, that were not only just a cool fresh take on what kind of cards exist in the game, but still managed to have almost all of them impactful enough to see play everywhere, while also managing to keep the meta from becoming too fast for decks that wanted to try them.
Worst 3 would be Goblins vs Gnomes, The Grand Tournament, and Mean Streets of Gadgetzan
I seriously chose GvG because the game's pace accelerated even faster than it did in Naxx but also introduced way too many RNG mechanics into the game that ultimately made me feel like I was playing a lightning round of Minesweeper constantly. Also the theme was very weak (but seeing this was the first expansion it is understandable)
TGT failed in my eyes only because the attempt to slow down the meta by just printing slower cards failed miserably. The power levels were simply too low to see any real use outside of a handful of cards, including Justicar Trueheart, or Undercity Valiant, and the Inspire and Joust mechanics were largely untouched except a couple classes that could use them.
MSG was probably the most tragically hyped expansion imo. The forced meta vision Blizzard had failed, and because of the introduction of all of the pirate cards, left 1 entire faction of cards unplayable, another faction unstoppable in Druid, and the other faction seeing limited use due to it being either stomped by aggro or stomped by Jades. Hopefully they don't try this again.
Simply put, WOG had one of the most diverse meta's in the game, which each class having at least 1 viable deck, even if it wasn't Tier 1.
really??? as far as i remember old gods is either everyone playing some sort of warrior (mostly aggro with the most common being Dragon Warrior trying to get a buffed Drakonid Crusher as early as possible ), or some sort of Zooish aggro deck regardless of the class whose primary win condition was vomiting its hand faster than the opponent because "lol, No AoE" and and aggro shamman with a 4 mana 7/7 that made their Tunnel Troggs into massive threat, and don't get me started on the face hunters runing the 8 manaCall of the Wild, in fact i remember old gods as the time i was the most frustrated with hearthstone because everyone could jus tplay cheap minions spam them and go face unpunished because AoE was mediocre to unexistent. which caused people to run pre-nerf Yogg and hope for a Twisting Nether or DOOM! in case you had survived until that point, the only non vomit hand deck i remember form old gods is C'thun Warrior. edit: Anyfin Can Happen paladin was the other only control deck in the game during that meta. and if i remember correctly rogue and Priest were pretty dead during that expansion, hence the Purify uproar when khara came out.
I don't care if there were 3 dominant decks or what it did to wild for a short time; I loved everything about Gadgetzan. EVERYTHING! Old Gods was just solid. Anyway...
3.) three-way tie between League of Explorers, Blackrock Mountain and Frozen Throne; all very good
6.) NAXX OUT PogChamp
7.) good ol' Classic
8.) tie between Un'goro and TGT; good expansions tbh but largely forgettable because of how defensive and underpowered the cards were
10.) GvG
11.) Kobolds & Catacombs, dumbest meta is the only reason why; cards are actually creative and fun
Dead Freaking Last.) Witchwood, sick of this expansion now tbh.
edit: whoops, forgot about One Night in Karazhan. I guess I didn't play much of that expansion as opposed to the others. I remember most of the set being bad/mediocre/too situational so really I guess I remember it feeling like Blackrock Mountain got an extra season thanks to that haha.
Simply put, WOG had one of the most diverse meta's in the game, which each class having at least 1 viable deck, even if it wasn't Tier 1.
I don't hate WOG but I don't believe "diverse" is a factually sound reason to like it. Excluding the first weeks of WOG where the meta had not solidified yet (all expansions have a fun first weeks with no solved meta), the meta was dominated by only a few classes. Almost all tournament lineups were comprised of Shaman, warrior, warlock, hunter and one other deck. The shaman was always banned because it was the top class by far. Mage, rogue and paladin were tier 3, while priest was trash tier. Recall that people were outraged when Purify was revealed because they were giving a bottom tier class a bottom tier card rather than the help it needed. I think this was also around the time we were memeing about how the famous priest main, Zetalot couldn't reach legend with his favorite class
I mean, just compare the class breakdown pie-charts of then vs now, which isn't even a far comparison because you needed to bring 5 decks, not 4 back then. If the requirement was 4, we would have literally seen mirror lineups across the board because the top 4 were so much better than the other classes

Damn those are some pretty good pie charts, is there a place where you got it from or did you make these? I'm curios about how balanced the Un'goro meta was since it felt incredibly balanced (aside from warlock being dead).

I don't have something witty about this deck, I just like it because Malygos is fun.
I'm surprised by all the Witchwood hate. This is one of the most balanced meta's we've had imo.
Too much BS and OP cards have been printed by now. Not terribly fun to play in this meta, I have to admit.
Best times for me were during year of the Kraken. Explorers, WoG, Karazhan. N'Zoth was one of my favorite archetypes and most classes were viable. Dragon decks were strong and I loved those too. It was a good time.
GvG is probably worst for me. Very oppressive meta. If you weren't running certain cards, you didn't win, period.
I was fairly sporadic starting with MSG up till K&C so I missed out on those metas. But going by the current state of things, I don't think I missed much!
My top three would be The Witchwood, after the changes made to copy interaction. Meta is very good right now. Overshadowed by the impending expansion, I feel many have just washed their hands with it despite how healthy it is.
In number two we have Knights of the Frozen Throne after druid was nerfed. I loved playing Deadman's Hand mill warrior and collecting deathknights was fun. Nice to have a card I wanted for each class.
In number 3 I would say MsoG. Probably the most controversial choice in this thread but that was the last time I remember miracle rogue actually feeling like miracle. It was also nice to play a deck that could obliterate every type of druid in the game.
LoE: Best mechanic ever released - Discover. Impactful cards, fun as hell singleplayer campaign. Perfect.
KoFT: Loved the hero cards. Loved the cards as well. The theme itself might be the only one I actually cared since launch.
KoC: As a DnD player, I loved the theme. The singleplayer game was very fun as well. Legendary weapon cards were fun, but not in the same level as hero cards.
WoOD: Very good theme. Tied with KoC here. The Old Gods thenselves were fun. Kind of a healthy and fun meta.
The worst:
TGT: I was very hyped for this expansion and it disappointed completely. Everything it tried to bring to the game failed.
The others either weren't that good or that poor in my opinion. Perhaps Mean Streets could be better, but I remember how I loved my Renolock back then, one of the most fun decks I played.

You get tired of killing 1/1's, and it feels like Cubelock has somehow lived on through Shudderwock. Also lots of the best cards are just defensive.
same here, I didn't expect that
