So the new expansion is set to be released on Tuesday. As a free to play player I have only saved up about 3k or so gold. From what I can tell most of the good cards are epic or legendary (and there are two legendaries per class), so I'm guessing I'm only going to get about 10 to 20% of the new expansion with my gold. Will this be enough to play on ladder, or am I going to have to go back to just playing casual mode? Thoughts from other free to play player?
It's like any other expansion. There will be decks you can afford and decks you can't. You just have to pick the best one in your budget and roll with it. If you are a long-term F2P player you know you can't continually adapt to the evolving meta so play casual until things settle down and then pick a deck, don't start crafting on day one.
You'll be able to ladder: Most decks will have at most 5 new cards from the newest expansion (unless it's a mech deck), so you'll never have to craft that much. Just choose 2 or 3 laddering decks that you can afford, and use your dust for those. Then, for the rest of the expansion, you can just open packs at your own pace and build towards other decks.
I've been a f2p player for years and I can say yes. Just buy packs with the gold from daily quests but wait with crafting until the meta settles. Try cards from your new pack openings or just play an "old" deck for the time being, it will suffice.
I've managed to save over 5k gold just from the daily quests. This was through the course of the Taverns of Time event, and the Fire Festival. As long as you're diligent about it, it is possible to buy into the new expansion every time, from just the in-game gold.
For your situation however, you'll get 3 packs for free from Blizzard when Boomsday arrives, and that plus your 3k gold, along with the daily mission, you should be able to get most of the commons, and a good percentage of the rares, with a few epics, and 2-3 Legendaries. If you want to play everything new, you'll need to open roughly 20-30 more packs, and that'll only guarantee the rares (for the most part). Some Epics and Legandaries will always elude you, but that's just the game, even for players that pay.
Two wrds - fire festival. I have a f2p deck, playing it for a few months, have all Baku decks now. You just need to play and craft wisely. And, I'm sitting at 2k gold there. You will be able.
Dude easy I'm free to play and have saved about 3200 gold , just play it safe and don't craft early cards because nothing is 100% predictable unless you love fun like me and pray for good luck
Part of the problem is I have been free to play for quite a long time, so I'm already quite far behind on my collection and can only play a couple of good decks at the moment. I'm worried with the new expansion even if it's just a few new cards the decks I'm able to play will not coincide with the playable decks after the expansion releases. For example, I can play Even Warlock now, but if Even Warlock is no longer competitive and is replaced by Mech Warlock (including a bunch of cards I don't have from existing sets), I will not be able to play Warlock anymore.
Another problem I have is I sometimes lose quests since I can't complete them (for example, win with Paladin when I don't have Baku), so I have to wait 24 hours to reroll and don't get a new quest :(
Not to mention one of my quest slots is lost since the Monster Hunt quest now sits there permanently :(

Judging by how bad the typical deck recipes have been up until today, I doubt it! :3

They will be competitive, just not autopilot. A lot of player confuse these things. Streamers can get to 5-legend with these decks, so with skill and patience you can too.
Well the best advice is to wait about 2-3 weeks after the release and see which decks are the best on ladder and then craft one that you like .. i used to be f2p player too and that was working fine .. and don't disenchant anything except duplicates you never know when and if a card will be used.
Also there is Whizbang the Wonderful RNG based but if you dont have a problem you can always craft him :)
This is why you dont dust your stuff and go play wild your collection just keeps growing and you never have to worry that you will miss a card but well that's just me I know not all people play wild and standard is the mode blizzard loves most but too me its a lot more . I always have all the top decks in wild because of this
If you already have some good decks, then those decks will still work most likely, even without new cards.
Also the better collection you already have, the more options you are going to have in BD. I doubt very many decks will have more than 5 new cards in them (although I've seen some that are almost all new cards, these are just theory craft decks though)
I have friends that are just gonna play one of the top aggro decks (odd rogue, pally and heal zoo) to capitalize on people trying new stuff and get EZ legend) so you will definitely be able to play one of those without even changing anything and get free wins VS all the theory craft stuff... just hope you don't face any druids and you'll be fine (druids are already nuts... that token druid is disgusting)

a word of advice for quests. just play with a friend. did you know you can copy a friends deck as well? so even if you have no cards for a class, a friend can build a deck for you that you can use in VS. with them.
all you have to do is get one face down to 15 then concede (unless you must get 3 wins, then the other guy must concede) I've been doing this for a while now. I re-roll for high value quests and if they are for classes I can't build good decks for I just put together anything for the class and challenge a friend.
The key is to befriend some people that don't mind helping out. whenever you get a new quest you go to your friends list and try and complete it immediately.

I'm also f2p with some significant holes in my collection in the epic and legendary areas, so I can understand. I guess the question though is how competitive you expect to be. I'm pretty sure it's possible to make it up to Rank 5 with either an off meta deck, or a meta deck with a few replacements. Sure, it might be harder, but personally I find it more rewarding.
As for losing quests, you could always challenge yourself by trying to build a decent deck with the cards you have and bring it to casual to get the wins if you're concerned about losing stars. It can be pretty fun to have a change up like that. As for the Monster Hunt quest, I'm not sure what's going on there, unless you just didn't do it.
Yes you will be able to play on ladder, but it isn't realistic to expect to be able to craft every tier 1 & 2 deck. You also don't need anywhere close to the full set of an expansion to compete.
Imo a lot more of the epics seem more valuable than many of the legendaries this time around. I could be wrong, but I feel that Psychmelon, Power Word Replicate, Crystalizer, and Augmented Elekk are going to see much more play than legendaries like the pally minion, Mech'thun (in competitive decks), Myra Rotspring, Zerek, etc.

I’m just crafting Whizbang. I don’t even care.

Well, you could... ya know... play monster hunt?
Craft yourself a golden Wizbang and your g2g!
Will the Wizbang decks be competitive, do you think?
