I'm honestly tired of reading comments like "oh it's unfair to new players" and "why should I pay to be able to compete?". Hearthstone is a cardgame and requires the player to be consistently up to date with the card pool and meta if they want to be competitive. Almost no cardgame is "free to play", look at the most popular paper ones: MTG, Pokemon and Yugioh all require you to buy the newest sets and adhear to restrictive lists as to what can be played in their current competitive rules.
The only way the game could be made easier for people who don't want to pay is to have a mode that is specifically for players who either have not paid a certain amount in game yet or do not have a % of the standard cards collected.

I'd be down for an improved temporary matchmaking system for new players. In teaching people learn best through scaffolding, or having temporary supports that are gradually removed over time, but when teaching new players to get better at HS the game adopts more of sink-or-swim approach. I feel bad for players who start the game now than during vanilla HS when there were many more of us that were initially bad at the game and still exploring it.
