So, can we all agree that the Boomsday Bundle is better than the Witchwood Bundle?
WW it's still the best Dust per Dollar value so far, with a base difference (non calculating the $10 hero value) of 20 dust less per dollar spent. BUT if you really like the new hero it's a fair deal.
It's more important to know that it's an astounding deal VS the daily purchases for the standard price. You'll get 71 dust more per dollar spent . It's a 50% off the market standard price.
Thanks for the post. It supports my decision not to preorder. 1.) I have no interest in the hero. 2.) the preorder is a step backwards from WW. 3.) it’s only an “astounding deal” if you consider the standard pack prices reasonable; if you consider standard packs grossly overpriced, as I do, it’s really not good value.
What you consider to be good value is ultimately a personal decision though. I get bored of HS quite quickly after the expansions drop, so for me an HS preorder has much less value than a AAA game (in terms of dollars per hours played).
What an absolute shill thread. If you spend 130€ on pre-ordering loot boxes, you have a problem.
I think people that can afford spending €130 on their hobby are the ones that don't have any problems.
Sounds like you have a gambling issue if you think opening loot boxes is a hobby.
It's a pack of cards, not a loot box. TCG have a precedence that it's appropriate to use the term. Gambling is always a contentious issue, but by what a loot box is defined as your statement inaccurate. You want to debate unfair business practices I will join you happily, but you have to call it what it is before you even begin.

Well, some view this as opening loot boxes, for others its just assembling a collection of cards. Also, I've never spent anything on this game so no gambling issues here.

I know, my problem is enjoying HS and not having enough time to grind every single quest and every single special event there is. I want to be able to pick the game up and build most of the decks I want. Completing on average 3 quests per week isnt going to get me there.
What do you suggest? Should I keep spending money on HS or quit playing it?
Hello folks, I made this calculation and posted it on another thread (here: Activision-Blizzard has gone too far with the Mega Bundle), but it's buried under 14 pages of toxic posting and general misinformation. I think it's an useful tool for those who want to buy a bundle or two, and get an idea of the returned value.
Please don't take it as set in stone as a lot of details regarding pack opening randomness are known only to blizzard itself and the concept of pity timer itself is still somehow aleatory. Below an extract of my original comment (containing the "how to read this" info) and conclusions. Please feel free to correct me or the calculation, this could and wants to be useful to anyone.
"This is a mathematical analysis based on data from Blizzard itself and data on Hearthstone wiki, such as average dust value per pack (102.71) and legendary pity timer set at 40. Keeping in mind that for a new expansion the pity timer is set to an initial value of 10. This analysis keeps the DUST on DOLLARS as a primary unit of measure, since it's the only one that could be applied in this case. Sentimental value for a Hero pic or a card back cannot be quantified and I believe that if someone WANTS that hero, he'll get it anyway.
I also used a theoretical NON GOLD legendary card value as a unit for the pity timer, since it's impossible to calculate the chances of getting a golden legendary, and it's only a plus when it happens.
Please see the attached image, I'm willing to share the google spreadsheet file to anyone.
TL:DR: Blizzard is going far yes...in giving you a great offer. Buying 130 cards from them from these bundles you're getting not only a hero, but a dust/$ value of 151.29 dust per dollar VS a 68.70 dust per dollar value if you buy an individual pack."
I'm seeing that you are using the dust per pack value of 102.71 and you are separately counting the dust from the legendaries you can pull with the pity timer; those legendaries are already counted in the 102.71 dust/pack. The regular purchases are a worse deal, but not by that much.
Moreover, you are counting the 10-pack pity timer of the bundle, but not in the regular purchases, which is also disadvantageous for the regular purchases, considering that you can buy and open the regular packs and they will count towards the 10-pack pity timer.
I would be interested to see the calculations for the UK! The 80 pack deal is most certainly better than the 50 pack, since the price per pack is lower for the 80 pack deal. Not taking into account amazon coins.
I did something similar where I made a program to simulate pack openings and found dust return was more exponential. I'm assuming that people are keeping all of their cards that aren't duplicates - I'll run it again and make a post on what I found... If I remember you need roughly 200-300 packs for all of the cards, but start really seeing a big dust return around 130-150 so that means you could just use the dust to make the missing cards
I believe you are wrong in calculation. These “theoretical legendaries” are already included in the 102 dust per pack so you should remve them. Only pack dust value plus golden legendary dust. Also, theoretically, 70 packs vs 50 packs are better because you will have more commons and rares but this is a matter of discission.
You're probably right. I need to check the source again, and if this is the case I'll update the chart tomorrow night

I just updated the post as per your suggestions, thanks again for the tip!
What bugs me is people getting mad about the hero bundle price. It's aesthetic, nothing more. Heaven forbid should people that actually contribute to the game get something special for themselves. Any F2P player can make a budget zoo or odd paladin deck and easily be able to compete with a P2P player. The hefty price isn't an alarm bell because the only advantage given to those purchasing it is more cards/dust to work with. If you were getting some advantage I'd understand the concern and be right there with you, but if you're F2P you contribute ZERO to the development of the game. It's your choice and I don't look down on you for it, I did F2P for quite a while, but don't complain that something is offered specifically to those who fund the game.
Obviously the golden legendary card ups the value by a lot. One legendary extra doesn't really sound like much, seeing that 20 additional packs on average also contain a legendary and 99 other cards.
This seeming good is more a sign of skewed dust values rather than a good value proposition. I'd rather have 100 cards than 1.
i'd rather have 1 golden legendary that is worth 1,6k dust (in the worst case), best case 3,2k dust (if i keep it), than 1 regular legendary and 99 duplicates of cards i already own, most of which are worth only 5 dust per card
I buy with coins on Amazon and that's the only way I buy packs. I get 10,000 coins for78-79 dollars all the time. I NEVER pay more than $1 a pack, to begin with. So $156 bucks gets me both bundles and an extra 40 packs plus 20 bucks left over. I was getting packs for less than 50 cents when they used to run coin back deals. People wonder why I have a complete 80% gold collection. I don't ever pay full price for anything that's why. With my free packs form gold ill be opening almost 400 packs and I spent $156.00 bucks. I guess some people would say that's a lot but divided out over 4 months since the last release on April 15 and rounding up it's $40 per month or.75 cents a day. People don't blink an eye at the $6 dollar latte from Starbucks they drink all the time but Hearthstone is very expensive to play. I just laugh. Being F2P doesn't even make sense to me. Playing with all the cards is a lot more fun! Playing with the newest top-tier meta in solid gold is worth .75 cents a day to me.

we know you haven't spent a dime on the game, bravo! I'll let you in on a little secret...NOBODY GIVES A F***!
I'm sorry for the OP that this thread has degenerated into more whining, but I'll never get tired of people who act like $130 is some problematic amount to spend on an ongoing hobby.
As I said in the "blizzard has gone too far with mega bundle" thread, if you are a f2p player, maybe you'd consider throwing thanks instead of insults. Pay to play players are the reason the game exists, and one would have to assume that means something to you if you're hanging around this part of the internet.

Helpful Clarification on Forbidden Topics for Hearthstone Forums:
Enjoying Americans winning in the Olympics is forbidden because it is political. A 14 plus page discussion of state-sponsored lawsuits against a multi-national corporation based on harassment, discrimination, and wrongful death allegations is apparently not political enough to raise an issue.
The dust/pack average is currently set on HS Wiki at 102.71, based on the opening of 32,697 packs for a total of 163,485 cards. If you know a better source for this data I'll gladly include that in the table (I'm not being ironic, or sarcastic)
I know that. I just don't like this figure since it's misleading.
I once took a closer look at the tables of pack opening statistics myself and then analysed roughly 1400 packs. I could have done more, but honestly, I did this all in one day and then I was a bit dried out, so bear with me that it's a not a huge number.
Anyway, what I did was to measure the average dust/pack value in blocks of 50 packs. My main problem with the numbers on the wiki was, that they all looked at very large numbers of pack openings, like people opening several hundred or thousand packs. Most players don't open thousands of packs. A more realistic number of packs seemed to me to be 50, since that's the amount you get from a pre-order.
As a result, many of these 50-blocks were under 100 dust per pack. And those that were at or above 100 ususally featured at least 4 or more legendaries or golden epics (400+ packs), which is alreay considered to be above average (1 in 20, 2.5 in 50). And of course, what really skews the results, are golden Legendaries since, as is said, one is already raising the average amount for 50 packs by over 30.
Almost every single block of 50 had 25 or more 40 dust packs. Only one had 24. To give a general idea (no exact numbers here yet), about 35 packs were under 100, and another 10-12 were between 100 and 180.So, it really came down to the best 4 or 5 packs in a block to determine whether it was above or below 100. From a statistical point of view, this is problematic.
If you would try to determine the average temperature in your local region, and found out that the average temperature is about 16°C across the year, but then you had two days where the temperature was 100000°C, while certainly unrealistic, you couldn't really say that the average temperature is far over 100°C across the year. The "average" number is misleading when it is heavily influenced by rare occurences that are far above normal. And that is exactly what happens with packs in Hearthstone. People who claim that the average amount of dust per pack is 100 have to assume, that you open enough packs to get lucky once in a while, preferably with a golden legendary, to end up with that number.
Most people open less packs, have less of a chance to get that lucky, and are more likely to end up with about 92 dust per pack, or even less. .
This is absolutely correct!! +1
