As you progress in the game and play more classes you will increase your win rate significantly. You will know what cards the opponent holds onto and which he is likely to use. A mistake I made when I started was clearing the board of an aggro opponent too early. If you can put some small minions on board that he will ignore and use your aoe next turn to clear a board with even more of his minions on there you will suddenly be very much ahead even though you took some face damage.
Thank you!! Great advice about the aggro opp. For me, I don't have very good executive functioning. Essentially this is all too much information for me to absorb. But I've been playing a tonne of rogue lately, tweaking my homebrew deck, and it's helped me to recognise a few things and anticipate them while playing against Rogue. It'll take me a hell of a long time to get my head around all of them, but if I can at least make some progress and not lose 80% along the way then it should be fun.
Here's my homebrew "Roguey Rogue" deck btw to give an idea on what I've been doing......

I haven't played it with Marin the Fox, just threw it in there to see if the reward was worth it.
That's one of the best DK's. Heck, I'm only missing him for my Druid decks. Druid also has the most deck archetypes out there at the moment. I'd say you hit the jackpot.
Malfurion is one of the better DKs so congrats dude. I would say Lanathel and (presumably) Dorian are safe to dust. I'd hold on the classic legendaries because you're going to be opening more packs from tavern brawl/shop and getting them back would suck.
Sweet! Thanks :D
It's a bit unfortunate that there are legendary cards that cost so much that are effectively (at the moment) nothing more than dust in sheeps clothing :/
Play casual first to get acquainted with the game. You will have more fun as you will be matched with people with similar win rates.
I've got over 100 wins, so I guess that means about 400 games! LOL not quite that many, but still a fair bit. I think it's more a matter of hitting the homebrew glass ceiling with not a great collection of cards and far from a strong understanding of dynamics. I'm feeling confident that the amazing advice from here and looking into netdecks (plus my 20 packs I just opened) will turn my win rate around to somewhere I'm enjoying it.
Thanks so much to everyone (except that one dickhead) for being so welcoming and helpful. I've only got one mate who plays HS, and he hasn't played for a week - so I've really got no one to talk to about it. You've all got orange gems! :D
Now I'm not about to complain having lost to Lord Marrowgar 7 times.....but I think someone in the Blizzard programming department kind of missed this one!
Some players have good decks at very low ranks because they bought/crafted the deck and don't yet know how to play it well, or they may be good and only do enough quests to get their rank 20ish chest since they might not like ladder that much, or maybe they took a break from the game (or just one format and made a format switch) after not playing for a few months.
The low ranks of Hearthstone are almost completely filled with expensive decks. Yes, it seems that only people with money to spend get into this game. At Rank 19, you will only find complete, expensive netdecks. The percentage drops at rank 20, but not that much. Rank 22 is still at least 50% netdecks.
Blizzard helped new players by making more low-level ranks. You'll notice that you still can't lose stars at those ranks, so you're still being pushed to Rank 20, where you'll have no choice but to invest money unless you already have a big collection.

The battlecry and hero power may not look as flashy as Rexxar or Gul'dan, but it's super effective.
Is that figure from Lego Castle on your prof pic ?
Yep, it's a Lego, though I don't know if it's specifically from Lego Castle =p
The Meta is exhausting. Sure many of us have a good collection of cards but ranking up is not very fun.
ranking up is optional though. At BEST I can see a point to pushing for rank 5 for the golden epic, but otherwise the only reason to even care about ranking up is HTC and the competitive route. If you aren't aiming for that then ranking up is a BAD thing. You end up facing against more high tier decks and competitive opponents that will blow unrefined and meme decks out of the water.
Ranking up is fun for competitive 'Spike' type people since they love to compete and challenge themselves. Of course they wouldn't be fussing about top tier decks in rank 20 since they would BE the meta deck user trying to get pack rank 20.
If you aren't that type then seriously, you WANT to keep your rank around 15. That seems to be the sweet spot for finding mixed decks.
There are a lot of solid, inexpensive decks. Not having a good collection is usually not the problem. There are two things that keep people from laddering in this game: Time. If you're playing Odd Rogue with a 55% winrate, you're going to have to play tons of games to start making progress on ladder. Some have that time, some don't. Its probably something you can't control, so don't worry about it.

Yeah I agree with you.
Hearthstone doesn't progress much compared to other games. Yet too many players think that if you rank up on ladder then you're doing what you're supposed to do to move forward in the game. The only meaningful benchmark is rank 5 due to the large amount of dust. Golden rares and a cosmetic legendary card back you only get once are honestly not that impactful of rewards and don't do anything to help you make and afford expensive decks.
And if you're tired of seeing meta decks ladder generally isn't the place to go, it would just serve to potentially burn you out on the game.
Yesterday i've encountered 2 or 3 Hadronox druids at rank 20 (with all cards). People like to win easy and many also to troll like silly cooonts. You can't tell me you can't get past 20 using Hadronox druid, it's strongest deck. It's true also that in order to rank you need much time to grind atm, but. This is only an example, speaking in general i've seen WAY too much powerful netdecks at rank 20 (even worse at 19-18-17). Yeah, lower rank's situation is pretty much non-sense. Latest expansions filled with op decks, new ranked system and presence of many trolls could be some reasons.
Personally I found 15-10 to be the best spot. Folks who want to bottom feed usually sit in rank 20. The folks who can and want to rank up will zoom right past 15 and into 5 quickly. That leaves 15 with mostly folks who just want to sit there with decks not really suitable for newbie smashing or ranking up.
ARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH I cannot win a single fucking game at rank 20. I wish this game was a physical object so I could throw it out the fucking window!!!!

Woot! Next stop, Druid netdecking!
Sweet! Thanks :D

Thanks heaps for that mate! I'll look into the Token Druids

You've spent FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS on this game?!!?!?

Should have specified to look actually at pictures of that =p. It's similar to the carvings on the walls they make to count the days =p
And definitely don't do it on your walls!

Not sure if hyped yet.

One does not simply walk into Mordor,
unless they want to be the best they can be.

Unpopular opinion: Rogue is OP
Yeah I agree with you.

I have about 200 legendary cards, started during GoblinVSGnomes, rank 24 at the moment.
