Hi guys, first post here! hopefully is the right section.!!
So, I've been playing F2P for 4 months now, but I'm starting to get stuck. I have 2K gold, and mainly cards from witchwood. I bought the starter pack for 5 bucks, but then nothing else, just arenas. I can't play ranked cause I'm missing a lot of previous expansion cards (kob, un goro, frozen) and I'd like to ask you for a good "buying strategy".
How should invest my bucks? I have around 800dust and some legendaries I can disenchant. I'd like to start ranking but I'm afraid I'll waste money if I'll buy let's say 50 packs of ungoro, that's about to get out from standard.
Can't really help without seeing your collection. I could then help you decide what to disenchant and what decks to strive for but it's a bit hard without.
It's a collection of mainly witchwood, but I can't play ranked cause I lack really a lot of cards from ungoro and frozen. I'm thinking about buying 10x expansion but I don't know if it's worth it...
I need also to farm dust but I work a lot and don't have time for arenas...
Search for the list which contains neutral common, rare and a few epic cards that are powerful to improve your collection (it's on the bottom of the standard tier list).
Do consider that every new expansion you open, you are guaranteed to get a legendary in the first 10 packs. So if you never opened any KotFT packs for example, you'll get a legendary 100% in those 10. Same goes if you buy some wild packs from the online store
I will recommend to buy classics packs for start. In August un goro will be in wild so don’t invest too much there. Just pick a favorite class or two and start making decks for them, disenchant cards like legendarys or epics you don’t need in order to create one good deck. I’m F2P too and also my girlfriend, we start playing this game in August last year and now we have great collections, constantly over rank 5, bolt of us reach legend.... and it all start by disenchanting all cards in order to make an awesome mage decks. That’s my suggest and wish you all the best :)

So, what do you suggest?
Thanks a lot!
Here's a video that analyzes the best and worst packs to buy, given the relative play-rates of the cards from each set -
Since you are a new player, you ought to focus on Classic packs - they never rotate. When you decide on the kind of deck you'd like to pilot, make a note of the expansions each card is from, and figure out the best purchasing strategy.
You should generally prioritize crafting neutrals, rather than class cards, since you can play them in any deck. I'd recommend Zoo as a great "starter" deck for new players. It uses a lot of cheap neutrals, and it's quite competitive, and piloting it optimally will teach you a lot about how to play HS. Here's a link to a good list -
If you like the deck, search for "TrumpSC, Zoo" on YouTube. Trump is one of the top HS streamers, and he posts plenty of "how to play" videos for popular decks - he also had a 21-game win streak a couple weeks ago piloting his own version of Zoo, and posted a couple gameplay videos of his ladder experience with the deck. GLHF.
Un'goro will not rotate out in August. Only in March/April, along with KFT and KnC. I can't believe after two standard rotations so many people still get this basic system wrong.
OP: after getting a legendary from each set like everybody said, I would start saving my gold. If you already have most of the WW set, I wouldn't play too much arena, as you don't really need the packs. When the next expansion hits, you should buy about 40 packs on day 1, and then play a couple of arena runs per week, and maybe purchase one classic pack each week. This should still allow you to save about 250g per week, which means you will have 4000g at the beginning of the next expansion. also, If at some point you feel like you have enough classic cards, you can change your weekly classic pack to UNG/KFT/KnC. Meanwhile, I would use your 800 dust and WW cards to craft some budget deck, just so you can be at least somewhat competative on ladder. You can find a budget deck here: https://www.hearthpwn.com/news/5494-five-wallet-friendly-witchwood-decks-for-the or in many other websites, or you can upload your collection to hearthpwn and hope someone makes a deck for you.
Hearthstone is not a f2p friendly game unless you are an extreme grinder like me and still you need like a year or so to catch up to a few decks.
If you insist on trying to get good at hearthstone you need to disenchant absolutely every card that has no immidiate use and make a good deck. No point in playing with bad decks. It brings nothing but frustration.
Right now probably the cheapest thing you could make is some sort of aggro mage depending on your colection.
I don't suggest playing arena until you are a high skill player and by high skill I mean you should be able to get at the very least 5 or 6 wins per run. Otherwise you just waste your time and it would be better to just play ranked.
If you didn't already, you should definitely open packs from each past expansions: there is a granted legendary within the first 10 packs (with some luck, no need for all 10).
That is free resources (3x legendaries worth 1200 dust in the future), and possibly cheap good legendaries.
Other than that, just build a cheap Midrange deck with solid drops, and do your best: nothing to lose anyway.
Once your collection grows, you can think about some smart crafting.
Upload tour collection using innkeeper or deck tracker. Then look for decks that you can make or you can afford to craft. Pick one budget high tier deck that looks strong and fun to you and see if you can complete that deck.
Also when buying packs. Make sure you stick to one expansion and don't switch until you get your legendary.
Give preference to crafting classic set neutral cards as you will get more value out of them.
I've been f2p always for 2 years now and my collection is looking good I can make lots of cool decks including a couple of tier 1 decks for every meta.
I always suggest to look at what deck you want to make and see what set makes up the most of the cards in it. But as a general rule if you plan to play the game for a long time, always start bulding your standard collection then get the most recent set because it'll be standard the longest time.
It's always amusing when people say ' it's not worth ' as if you're entitled to decide to what ratio someone's time is worth less than a set amount of money.

Look, I want to tell you something because you're very dear to me. And I hope you understand that it comes from the bottom of my damaged, damaged heart. You are the finest piece of ass I've ever had and I don't care who knows it. I am so glad that I got to roam those hillsides.
As for OP everything's been said already, open a reasonable bunch of standard packs so you'll have an easier time filling in the gaps for a good deck from other expansions.

For someone who wants to play an online card game without spending (much) money, Hearthstone sadly is one of the worst games out there despite the few improvements over the last year. It takes a new player several months to get started, and it remains very unfriendly to casual players until they are about a year in and can profit from a Standard rotation. And that's just Standard; Wild is borderline impossible.
If you really want to stick with the game, expect that it will take quite a while until you feel comfortable playing ranked. As for purchasing strategies, you can get 10 packs from each set to get a guaranteed legendary, as others suggested, just to have a bit to work with. After that, I would actually recommend to get just a bit of Classic and otherwise try to save as much as possible for the set coming out in August and don't bother with older sets.
The daily quests will mostly net you 50 or 60 gold per day, and unless you feel like grinding, that's one pack every two days. At this rate, you simply can't really afford to get into the older sets without falling behind on new ones.
If you do want to buy cards from last year sets for whatever reason, I'd recommend to focus on Frozen Throne. It is a great expansion with many useful cards, and thanks to the Death Knights, a good number of the legendaries is quite strong, even today. Most other sets only have about 5 good legendaries, so your chances of getting a useful one are not that great. However, Frozen Throne will rotate in April 2019 along with Un'Goro and Kobolds.
As for right now... try to make the best with what you have and stick with Casual. You can play Ranked up to 20 without losing in progress, so that's always possible. But these days, even lower ranks can be painful to go through, so don't mind losing a lot of games.
Continuing with Arena is also an idea, if only to get more comfortable with the mode, as it is the only one where your collection won't matter.
Oh my guys! Thank you so much for all the tips! As you suggested I uploaded my collection on innkeeper, so feel free to browse it and see how bad it is!
Secondly I invested my 2k in 10 ungoro and 10 frozen, got my 2 legendaries and some decent stuff too.
I think I'm a good point with the classic cards, but of course I'm missing tons of legendaries. I know I should choose one deck and start building it, and that would've been quest rogue or cube lock, but the first got nerfed badly and the latter is VERY expensive.
I would really like to get a competitive deck, even investing some real bucks, but between the nerfs and the young age of my account I can't really pick one I guess.

well first you need to have a good amount of the classic cards then you can start buying the other expansions
and if you havent already buy 10 packs of each expansion to get your free legendary
you should only play arena if you average out 3 wins otherwise just buy packs
you also have two years left for the current expansion cause everything rotates out every two years

Good luck, and have fun!
I would invest in stock market rather than Hearthstone in these days. :)
Playing Hearthstone since Oct 2015. Favourite class: Warlock.
Aaaand I have 99 skills, but the english language ain't one. :D
To correct this, no sets rotate till next year. Ungoro Is around till next year, April at the very least.
Golden Hero Collections thus far; -
Europe: Druid, Hunter, Paladin, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior (9/9)
Americas: Druid, Mage, Paladin Shaman (4/9)
Everywhere else: Workin on it.. (0/9)
I highly suggest to go look for other games.

Keep playing to get some gold, NEVER spend money on this game, not worth AT ALL.
