So most of the time I enjoy playing the ladder. The ONE game I don't enjoy is the one where you're just one star away from making a level you can't be knocked down from - 20, 15, 10, 5. I don't know if it's bad luck or if I choke in those games but this weekend I was ONE GAME away from making level 5 seven times. And I lost ALL SEVEN games.
I refer to those opponents as “gatekeepers”. No matter what shit you’ve been wading through until then, the gatekeeper is always waiting with a top-tier deck that perfect-draws and tears you apart.
Either that or some janky meme deck. "I've been putting off this boss match for 3 days only to face this garbage?"
I usually end up win streaking over that 1 star point so don't get stuck on that too often. But recently I just find I'm not having fun playing so mostly just doing my quests and logging off.
I made it to legend once. On that journey, I lost to the legendary "gatekeeper" 5 times, once dropping back to rank 3. Those games are super tilting, because it feels like a game of time. Every loss is a loss of 10-15 minutes that you have to make up with a win, so a single loss at a gatekeeper can translate into hours upon hours of time getting where you could have been if you simply had better draw or had a better matchup. As much fun as I have playing hearthstone at other times, those games are no longer for enjoyment.
At least the last time when I actually made it, the murloc paladin rage quite through disconnect when he saw he couldn't win.
In one of my matches I had a priest down to a single point of health while I still had more than 20. That was the lose that hurt the most. It was like being up 3-1 in a best of 7 series and still losing.
It's funny ... I got knocked all the way back down to 8 and then went on an insane winning streak. And then after attaining level 5 I promptly started getting my a** handed to me again. God I love this game.
Happens to me all the time too, I dread playing ladder after beats like that and typically take a 2-3 day break after. It's psychological, but the effect is so powerful that it feels like the meta is changing right under you.
