Since the release of the Witchwood I opened 160 packs, including pre-order and some packs bought with money, others with gold. The results were pretty close to what I would expect, out of the 800 cards 577 were common (72.13%), 174 rare (21.75%), 39 epic (4.88%) and 10 legendary (1.25%). Dusting all the doubles brought about 8000 dust, or 5 more legendaries.
As a result I got all commons, 70 of 72 rares, 31 of 54 epics and (obviously) 10 out of 23 legendaries. Pretty solid, I think.
But now the question I am facing: How much sense does it make to buy more packs. Clearly I am still missing a bunch of cards, but since I have a good chunk of the set already, the chances of actually acquiring new cards in the next pack is decreasing. Lets assume I spend another 20 bucks to get 15 more packs. More than 90% of those 75 cards can be expected to be common or rare, and since I already have most of those, it is safe to assume I would essentially pay most of my money for what ammounts to really not that much dust.
According to my calculations, based on the distribution of my 160 packs, I could expect a dust value of about 1300 for those 15 packs, assuming I dust everything. Obviously, should I be lucky enough to get a Legendary, I would keep that, reducing the dust to 900. (It is often stated that the average dust value per pack is 100, but that is assuming dusting legendaries, which few people without a full collection actually do.)
In any case, once you have a good base in your collection, the more packs you buy the more diminishes your return on the investment, simply because the dust you get increases, but never keeps up with the actual value of the card.
I wonder how you deal with this conundrum. What is the sweet spot of packs to buy and still expand your collection for a reasonable price? Given that spending $20 (or 1500 gold) does not even guarantee you a legendary you want, or, depending on your pity timer and luck, no legendary at all and not even enough dust to craft one.
Personally I decided that about 150 packs is where I stop to actively acquire more packs of any given set and rather save my money/gold for the next expansion to get a better return on my investment, but I am curious to learn what you guys and girls think.
Well, it also depends on your situation. Personally, I am doing fine economically and 20 $ won't change much for me. Thus, if I buy 15 packs and only receive 40 dust pr pack I won't be that sad. However, if you are on a budget and you can't afford buying food at the end of the month then it's probably a bad trade off to keep spending money on the game.

Oh, this was not meant as another "Hearthstone is too expensive" thread. I am in the fortunate situation where I can afford to spend some money on a game I play every day, but still I am conscious of the fact that the more I spend the less I get, in a way. And so I am trying to decide if one legendary and maybe one or two epics (if that) are worth $20 to me or not.
And as Blizzard always states, it is about the experience opening packs (which is what I pay for), and spending any amount of money and feeling like I got nothing (or very little new stuff) to play with is not encouraging me to buy more. Like I said, there is a sweet spot where I feel I still somewhat get my money's worth, and that, for me, is buying about 150 packs per expansion. I do have some disposable income, but not enough to not care about the return on my investment at all.
After 160 packs you already have every usable card from the expansion (or at least enough dust to craft the cards you're missing), unless you're a collector and want every single card i think you should stop opening packs after 120-150 packs (depends how lucky were you with the epics and legends).
If we will take a look at use rates of legend cards from WW in HSreplay (Link) we will see that only 4 of them see regular play (and one of them is Shudderwock that see play for meme purposes), the rest are either unplayable or see some play in niche decks.
I don't think you should spend money just to acquire few more cards that you will never use.

Different people have different ways playing this game. And, unfortunately, opening 150 packs does not necessarily give you all playable cards, especially considering the increase in power level of epics. Getting nine or ten legendaries by no means guarantees you to get the three or four good ones in the set. And WW is kind of an exception in that regard anyway, KFT and K&C certainly had more playable legendaries and epics.
And, as I stated above, 8000 dust only get you this far. Sure, it should be enough to craft one or two top meta decks, but I personally prefer to play more decks, also I like to experiment.
Also, I am not asking for advice if I should buy more packs, I am asking how other people decide at what point they feel their return of investment does not justify spending money or gold.
I wont ever buy packs again.......period......its a rip off.
I dont give a shit about IRL card games........this isnt one......period.
I could go on an on about how IRL card games actually give you something real, but I digress.
spending 160$ on a video game and it doens't net you the entire expansion.....fuk dat shit.
Well summed, I'll NEVER EVER again put a single penny on this game, you pay for a triple A price game and you get 30% of the content, and if only it was a balanced game.
Sometimes I'm tempted to get packs, but then you take a step back and realize you can buy full retail games for $30-60. Meanwhile, my pack luck is below the average according to Pity Tracker, and I am constantly having to spend all of my dust just to try single decks--usually a full expansion later because I kept relying on getting the cards I needed through packs.
If Blizzard actually made balance changes to cards (like once a month), I would absolutely start supporting them again.
I probably opened around 160 packs as well, and I don't see myself buying any more packs for this expansion. I'm at the point where I can craft cards for classes I play but can't craft cards for classes i rarely play (like priest or shaman) and I'm fine with that. Spending more would only allow me to get a more complete collection but if I don't enjoy certain class playstyles what's the point? I'm happy with the packs I got and the collection I ended up with.
Unless you want a full expansion, I don't see any reason to get more than 80 packs per expansion. Once you have all the commons and almost every rare, you are burning money just for small amounts of dust and hoping to find legendaries or epics which drastically range in quality. It's usually just better to craft the good ones at that point.

I did not read your thread as another generic: "HS is too expensive" - my bad if I sounded too negative in my comment. :-) I completely understand your point of view. And I agree. Even though I can afford to spent a fair amount of money on Hearthstone I won't buy packs whenever I feel like it. As you say there is a sweet spot where it's seems redundant to put money into the game. While I don't have a precise number (as you) I go with my gut feeling - however, if my girlfriend feels like opening a few packs I buy them because she loves it.
Though you might get lucky. I've bought 2x15 packs within the last month or so, and it netted me a total of 6 legendaries.
In my experience, it all depends on your skill level as a player. If you are a regular daily player, you will earn somewhere around 5000-6000 gold per month from quests and daily grinding. That means if you save up your gold for 1 month prior to an expansion and do the preorder, you should be able to get about 120-130 packs. Make decks with what you got in those packs and play for a bit just to earn some more gold, play Arena (in perpetuity if you're skilled) for more packs until the meta settles down a bit and you know what legendaries are worth crafting, then dust all your duplicates and craft whatever you want. I spend another $69.99 just because I don't disenchant any gold cards until they move to Wild and I want more cards early in the new meta, but that's just me. But I NEVER spend more than $120 per expansion anymore, even as a collector with 95% of the entire Hearthstone card collection. Good luck!

6000 gold per month?? How?
100 gold per day from grinding, that's 3000 gold per month, and 50-100 gold per day in quests. I reroll all my quests that aren't 60g or more.

I'm not sure those 100 gold per day are feasible for many players. Even assuming a generous average winrate of 60% and an also generous average time per game of five minutes you'd be playing the game for more than four hours every day (50 games a day x 5 minutes = 250 minutes or 4h 10m). Good for everyone who has that much time, but I doubt that represents the majority of players.

Good job a good conclusion, I tend to agree with you.
I opened my last legendary in my 140st pack and I'll stop as soon as I get the next one
