I read from other posts that it takes about 250pks to get a full set. Blizzard charging $50 just to have about 20% packs worth of getting all the playable content is pretty gross and offensive to its customers. Whether you can afford it or not, the rip-off is apparent.
In an odd way, I think both are true: Hearthstone is too expensive, but you can be a competitive F2P player. If you complete your daily quests, wait for the meta to settle after a new release and only craft what you need for a few high-tier decks, you can definitely reach Rank 5 every month as F2P.
If you're like me and don't want to just net-deck whatever has the highest win percentage, you're going to need a large card pool to experiment with. Unfortunately, that means a pretty heavy investment. This is what bothers me, the current system doesn't encourage experimenting and creativity simply because there is a steep pay-wall in front of the cards. Instead, it encourages net-decking and focusing on 1-3 of the strongest decks in play.

I suggest you vote with your wallet! Don’t spend another $ on the game :)

Oh I will be, This one is too far. Soon as Acti got involved the level of greed went up. Coincidence? I think nat!!
I personally don't mind it, I spend so much money on video games and I always play hearthstone so it doesn't bother me as much to spend money on it. They gave us 2 options for preorder so you could buy the more/less expensive one or both if you really wanted to.
They also give you free packs for logging in, voting on HCT champions, etc. They have special events like Toki and the Fire festival, they give you a free legendary every expansion. They are pretty generous with what they give you in my opinion, and on top of what I already got from spending too. Most of this just seems like senseless whining
Canadian here. Bought both bundles. Likely wont buy another pack till next expansion. Will have around 5k gold saved as well. It is costly but I use to drop loads of cash on MtG so I dunno..
it can be pricey if you don't have the time to put into it.. I don't find it so bad now that i've purchased the adventures and a few packs here and there, but putting money into the game certainly speeds up the process of collection
I play 1 arena run a day, never had to spend anything and my collection is doing just fine. I started at the end of gadgetzan and right now I have a collection whereby I can play whatever I want. Its really how much time you are willing to spend, if you’re very busy then maybe the F2P option isn’t for you, but it can be done.
I think everyone knows that it is possible to play it for free but it doesnt respects your time. I love videogames in general as i love hearthstone. I just want to play every class with every stupid deck that exists without needing to take a credit for it. i would even be fine with a monthly subscription for a complete collection without golden cards. Maybe a stupid thought but just my 2 cents.
Well, of course if you're wanting everything and want to play everything then just about any game would be expensive.
Actually playing for free doesn't really get in the way of your time much. You complete one measly quest a day and you're keeping up with your gold input. If you don't have enough time to do that then your lifestyle shouldn't include playing video games at the moment anyway since you obviously have more demanding responsibilities that are more important than a child's card game.
I came here from Magic the Gathering and am the type of player that needs to have every meta deck at my disposal. Compared to MTG, Hearthstone is ridiculously cheap. To stay competitive at the tournament level in MTG, you need to spend between $2000-$5000 per year. With Hearthstone, you really only need to spend a few hundred per year. If you play a lot or are good at arena, you really don't have to spend anything. Sure, compared to a non-collectible game it is expensive. When compared to most other CCGs, it is unbelievably cheap (free in some cases).
This, so this.
"But, but, but" I hear them cry "you have something physical which you can resell"
"Fuck off" they hear me respond "have you every actually tried selling magic cards in bulk, you get tit all" most of the sites I've looked at offer great deals like $3 / 1,000 commons/uncommons and the amount you make from rares and mythics barely makes a dent in what you've already paid. What you actually end up with is cupboards full of magic cards and a wife regularly asking if you really need all that space and why don't you just throw them away so she has somewhere to store her sewing machine and material. Ok I may have strayed into another issue there but you get the point.

That's fairly common in the digital marketplace though. It's a pretty important point as well as if I legally owned the content I'd bought then Blizzard would have to seek my permission to make any changes to it i.e. they couldn't nerf without the approval of everyone who owned that card (or at least a majority vote) which would be a horrendous situation to be in.

@OP, Hearthstone may seem expensive but has a great f2p model if you are willing to put in the time for it. Comparatively the packs aren't as expensive as other card games that exist and the only reason I bring up MTG is because there is an online version. Hearthstone if you have the budget for it will put you out about 200$ USD per year if you would like to purchase all pre-orders which is cheap in comparison to again MTG being 120$ a box per expansion. If you are looking to only spend a little or maximize value make sure to check in on when they do dust events or double gold. :) Cheers
my big thing is they advertise only for it's american consumers...50 bux for 50 packs doesn't sound that bad but if you're anywhere else in the world you get the shaft. Plus you don't actually know what you're spending money on...you could get a good pack or you could get a 40 dust pack. The whole loot box thing is bullshit. If they gave me the option to actually choose what I was getting I'd probably spend more money. I find that Blizzard needs to stop charging full price for what are essentially add-ons. Like look at Diablo 3...there's 3 different copies of the game they've come out with...the original, the one with the crusader, ad the one with the necromancer. All they did was make a few balance changes and add a new character but that warrants the purchase of another 80$ game give me a fucking break. In short FUCK BLIZZARD YOU MONEY GRABBING WHORES!! Fuck i'm salty

Well, if you're salty, so am I. I heard about the Necromancer, got all excited, reinstalled and then went to use it. "Oh. I have to pay more money, even though I've already bought the game.. for one class?" Hm, uninstall again.
Blizzard has not, as a modus operandi, been greedy all that often. But they're heading that way, and it's looking troublesome. As I said elsewhere in this thread; I'll do the standard pre-order, but fuck the mega pack, let alone both.
