Sorry if i missed this. So if I have bought the $5 welcome pack, am I still guaranteed a legendary in the first 10 classic packs? Ty again a ton for everyone's help.
I think the rule just applies to the first 10 packs of any set, doesnt matter if they are bought in cash, bought in gold, earned through quests.
In that regard id say if you have bought the classic starter set move on to one of the other sets to spend you goal, then come back to classic once you have a legendary from within them all
I'm surprised by the 'play Warlock' recommendations, although maybe I just don't know. I've started fresh accounts a few times just to see how things are with Basic decks, and my experience is that you pretty much want to play Mage first if you want early wins, and then Priest.
I always found it hard to build fast or aggressive decks until my collection started to fill out, so you basically need to play a control style -- control the board, and chip away at your opponent's health. Mage has the strongest Basic cards by a good margin. Frostbolt and Fireball are standard includes in almost every Mage deck that ever was. Priest is good because it has the most control-centric hero power and good synergy.
I'll also chip in with the advice to avoid dusting cards for now. It takes a lot of dust before it can make a meaningful difference. In fact, don't dust anything unless you know what you want to do with it in advance, like if there is a good legendary that you feel like one of your decks really needs, and you need a bit more to be able to afford it.
And welcome to the game! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

How is control easier to start?? (Way more expensive cards - for aggro decks, something like Leeroy can be swapped for a budget version, i.e. Reckless Rocketeer or smth...unfortunately, a lot of aggro decks need some legendaries to be really effective; Aluneth, Baku, Keleseth, Leeroy etc.)
I'd say the best classes for a beginner are mage and hunter (even if hunter isn't as strong as it used to be), then warlock...budget zoolock can be built without expensive cards, it won't be as effective, but it teaches the important gameplay skills all the same imo. When to trade, when to push face damage etc.
Anyways, I think OP should build a deck around one of the legendaries he got from packs, and then look to improve it (for example, he might build a Jaraxxus warlock, and open Gul'dan soon, so swap it for a better card).
OP, did you do the Lich King fight? I don't know for sure, but you should still get a free Death Knight from that?

My experience in trying to build Basic aggro decks is that you put in all the chargers -- Wolfrider, Reckless Rocketeer, Stonetusk Boar, Bluegill Warrior, and then any burn or weapons your class has available (which aren't many, even for Hunter), and then you are left with 10-14 spots that you need to fill with cards that have no business being in an aggro deck. You end up with a bunch of those other cards in hand and the deck feels super-weak against slower decks that are piling up board presence.
Control is better for minimal collections because:
Almost every class starts with a reasonable degree of cheap single-minion removal
I agree that Zoolock becomes viable fairly quickly as you start to fill out the Classic set, finding cards like Knife Juggler and Flame Imp. I also agree that it is a good learning deck for learning about value trading, although the skill of knowing when to trade and when to go face is important to pretty much every deck.
Tempo mage is effective and cheap deck . You can climb with this deck till legend if you have skill and it just need 1 legendary card Aluneth . Also even not have Aluneth it still strong deck . See the list that Thijs twiiter EU playoff deck. You can also see Thijs'video on twitch how to pilot this deck .
Hey guys. Thanks everyone sincerely for the helpful posts.
So I spent my gold on 10 basic sets and no there is no legend (I did get one in the $5 set tho so idk if that's why). Anyway I'm now working toward my 10th of the newest set (I get the argument for going for second newest but as I am not very good and lack gold I figured I'd get more bang for my gold this way).
based on above posts I am going to focus on mage more. I haven't used him much in casual. Been using my wannabe zoolock and a control shaman I made myself (which isn't very good but is fun to play when it works). On a side note - is doomsguard a good card for zoo? I added him to my home made zoolock (loosely based off a basic netdeck).
How Do I get to the lich king? For the solo adventures I haven't been able to beat any of them but did make it to level 3 on the frozen night one. And beat enough bosses on each class to get the gold bonuses. Thanks again all.
Doomguard is good in zoo since you run so many 1 and 2 drops the discard doesn't really matter (and you can draw with the hero power). It has 7 health so can be used to make trades as well which makes it more useful than say Leeroy (which is generally only used as a finisher).
You unlock the lich king by beating all the bosses in all the wings (2 or 3 wings, can't remember).
This is tempo mage deck as I said above you just cut bloodmage thanos and add amani berserker or mosquito to be cheap deck. Zoolock for now are not much competitive deck due to there are so many good taunt on the ladder and zoo can not pass it but you can try . Hope that this can help you .
In the comments, you can find additional advice on replacements, even a video of gameplay at legend rank! (I'd advise against crafting anything for it, just replace stuff with similar cards, or cards you feel are missing - someone suggested polymorph for example - for the moment)
What are the core cards for mage tempo that a basic mage deck has? Am I just looking for spells to deal damage, clear the board and cheap minions for early board control?
My advice is build a deck with what you have, and have a look at some of the refined lists here on the site, and then try to go towards that. (Ideally, without spending too much dust on crafting - don't craft too many commons and rares since you'll open them in packs soon enough, just swap them for similar stuff where possible)
Edit: sorry, I completely blanked out at the "tempo" part...well, out of those I suggested, Fireball, Frostbolt and Arcane Intellect are core, you wanna draw a lot and direct your spells at the opponent's face...the strategy with tempo mage is generally try and develop a few cheap threatening minions (Amani Berserker is also used nowadays), chip away some health of your opponent, and then finish him with spells. It doesn't really use AoE spells like Flamestrike, but something like Arcane Missiles (and Cinderstorm) can be used as pseudo-boardclear.

This is good advice, crafting cards is expensive, don't spend a bunch of dust just to fill out a deck list you found on the internet. The best use of dust is when you have a deck you really like and there is an epic or legendary that fits with it really well that you are missing. Also, try to craft cards that are useful in many different decks -- the first legendary I ever crafted was Bloodmage Thalnos because at the time is was popular in all Rogue decks and in many Mage decks.
imo cards like Genn Greymane and Baku the Mooneater are sensible crafts because there are a number of classes that can have even and odd decks, and they are likely to get better as more synergizing cards are released in future expansions. But I wouldn't rush to get them until you think you have a deck to put them in.

Does the guaranteed legendary still apply to the basic packs if I already paid for the $5 starter pack?
in their words if I have already the $5 welcome pack and I buy 10 basics am I guaranteed a legendary?
thanks again everyone. After I get some packs I'll post my deck with the innkeeper app if anyone has time to critique it.

Okay thanks. If I get a legendary that's not useful or will cycle out should I dust it?
Should I start with the second newest expansion?
its so tempting to buy starter packs so I can use them long term. But I guess I should resist that urge and go for the legends? Thanks again.
Excuse my ignorance but to craft I first need to dust?

You can try building and playing this, it's a budget deck with a guide from a team from my country: https://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/1104574-cg-budget-mage

Cards like Fireball, Frostbolt, Arcane Intellect, Flamestrike, Polymorph (and even Water Elemental) are generally considered good cards, and they're all basic...add Mana Wyrm and Sorcerer's Apprentice (cards of Common rarity) to that and you already have 16 decent, cheap cards...they are not always included in a deck, but for a cheap, budget mage deck they are all fine.
