Thanks in advance anyone who takes the time to read and reply to this. I used to play MTG as a kid and now have gotten into this game and been playing for 2-3 weeks. I have read a ton of online guides but have some questions that I found the guides were either conflicting on or didn't answer in a straightforward way.
Quick info. Right now I'm focusing on mage and mostly warlock. I'm essentially a f2p player, did buy the $5 welcome pack, and wouldn't mind spending some money on the game here and there, but nothing substantial. I have 900 gold and have completed most the basic quests. I have gotten everyone at least level 10 and am working on leveling up my wannabe zoolock deck to 20 so I can start doing tavern brawl. I built my decks using the net decks on disguised toast. I have read most the guides out there and have the trump videos on my to watch list.
1) is it a good idea to focus on warlock? It seems I could craft a relatively "cheap" decent zoolock deck to play against other players so that's why I chose this class. I tried to get into Druid but my game was too dependent on getting the extra mana spells early. Also tried hunter (using a beast deck, like I said got everything from disguised toast) but deck seems too slow to be competitive. I doubt I will ever play well enough to really be even semi competitive. For now I just play casual and a lot of one player games.
2) what do I spend my 900gold on? I was leaning towards just buying classic packs so I can enjoy them long term. But I keep reading about buying 10 packs of the other sets to get a legend. What's a better idea? If I buy non classic, should I just get the most recent set?
3) should I dust anything yet or just keep playing for a while? I have one gold card but it's a good one (sorry forgot which) and a lord of jaraxxus (sorry if spelling is wrong) but I plan on keeping him.
4) I read online about the "one night in K" adventure you can buy online to play a solo adventure plus get cards. But I can't find it. Did it cycle out? I wouldn't mind spending $50 for cards if I also get a solo adventure with it cuz I have a lot of fun with those. Besides the starter pack is there anything else definitely worth spending real money on?
5) should I keep playing casual for a while or try ranked? I read some posts here and ranked sounds unenjoyable until you have at least a good budget deck. Also on that note should I bother with arena now or wait til I have a better deck?
6) besides the trump videos and playing a lot, any advice on how to get good? I really enjoy the statistical and strategical aspect of this game and enjoy learning about tempo etc. But I don't want to just play a bunch of stacked decks (as I sometimes get in casual) and lose all the time but I do try to play til the bitter end against better players so I can learn
7) is it a good idea to join a group online to play some even tiered players or learn? If so how do I find a good group?
8) if I only have one device to play on, can I still make a "dummy account" to help accomplish some missions?
9) anyone know other websites with good 0 dust / basic decks that are fun to play?
Okay sorry for the long post. Have some other questions but that is to get started. thanks a bunch for anyone who has time to answer.
1. I think warlock is a fine class to focus on, life tap is the best hero power in the game and if you have low powered cards you can at least draw 2 per turn.
I believe the conventional wisdom is to start out grinding arena to build your collection, plus you get matched on MMR when you're a noob. Classic packs are probably the best when you're trying to build a base of cards. You're also guaranteed a legendary in the first 10 packs of any given expansion so try to at least open them until you pack your legendary.
4. One night in karazhan was an awesome expansion but it has indeed rotated, they don't do those bundled sets anymore which is a bummer because they were great value.
5. casual matchmaking is based on MMR so it's a good place starting out. But play some ranked and don't worry about losing, worry about learning.
6. Don't have an answer but you seem to have a good mindset for the game. Sometimes you can play your cards perfectly and lose, just like in Magic, variance and bad luck are part of these games we play. At least you don't have to worry about mana screw or flood.
Awesome thanks so much for the reply. For follow up on spending gold. I already have the $5 starter pack and got a legend with that.
I like the idea of buying Classic packs with gold cuz if i set the game down and come back in a year I still have those cards. Are you guaranteed a legend on first ten classic packs? In other words should I buy 10 classics then try for 10 of every other class? Or just focus on classic alone for a few months maybe to build up my collection? Thanks a bunch again for taking the time to reply.
As everyone said before; Warlock is a great starting class, it has an amazing hero power and decks like Zoolock are relatively cheap. Burn Mage is also a relatively cheap deck, but compared to zoo it's somewhat expensive.
Also yes you are guaranteed a legend within the first 10 packs of any set you open, but I do believe the best set to open for you is probably the classic set, theres a bunch of cards from the classic set that are very commonly used and every single one of the classic legendaries (bar Al'akir) have spots in a large portion of their prospective class decks. So if you want to be adventurous, you can reach into other packs to see if you can get a legend or so, but a large portion of the cards you'd end up opening from them may be niche or unusable without the rest of an expensive deck, so your best bet is still probably the classic set.
Also, don't be afraid of home brewing a deck; if you have a bunch of cards that you want to play in a deck but there isn't a '90% win rate LEGEND' deck for it online, go for it. I personally don't find a lot of deck lists very final anyway, most of them can be optimized in some way so you can always play around with the decks on here, I know a lot of pros publish decks with the F2P moniker (Free 2 Play) that are usually 0-1000 dust and mostly have been built around the classic set with maybe 1 or 2 cards from different sets.
Another tip for you, borrow a friend's iPhone log in, borrow a friend's android phone download and log.in, that will.get u two extra packs, take a look.at the list of basic in game challenged to make sure you have completed all the easy initial.gold challenges so you can buy packs
Jarraxus is really cool, but not competitive so as sad as it is I would say dust it.. particularly because it's golden
Buy 1 of set with gold until you get a legendary, guaranteed In your first 10 packs for each.. after that I would 100% focus on classic set packs.. I've an ok collection but still smash classic packs, the epics are 50/50 but a lot of them are so useful
The cheapest deck for me when I wanted to rank back in the day was spiteful.. is still incredibly competitive but very basic in play style, I kind of hate it nowadays,
TheTcheapest deck i persinally play ajd still find fun is a kind of midrange hunter deck.. DK rexxar is pretty essential though to win later game.match ups, but a balance.of spells.stones, secrets, solid minions and weapons.. a lot of value...
If I were u Id focus on quests, get your gold for packs, get the legendaries you get from ungoro, kft, KnC and then see if u end up with anything you can build around...
i know this may not be available for you but i would get a friend who is good or someone to spectate your game and guide you through what to do it really helped me and i am now confident in my gameplay and can get to rank 5 instead of being stuck at 14. good luck!
Do not dust Jaraxxus! Do not dust legendaries in general, EXCEPT if they are a really bad one and golden! (So you're essentialy trading them up for whichever you want). The new system doesn't let you open a legendary you already own so while you have a bad legendary in collection, you have higher chances of opening better ones. Also, once Bloodreaver Gul'dan rotates out of standard, Jaraxxus might see a comeback, it's a control powerhouse even if it isn't played right now (because of how insane Gul'dan DK is).
It will be a long journey until you get enough cards to build different competitive decks. If I were you, I'd open ten packs of each standard sets first and try to build decks around the cards if you are lucky enough to get some good ones. Then focus on playing arena for a while since it's where you can already try to win your fair share and get more gokd if you get good. Watch some arena streams to help at first. Casual and ranked can be fun in between, as well as tavern brawls to help you get your quests done
You dont need any cards to play arena. You will pay the entry fee, select one of three offered classes and build a deck from offered cards. It is the most efficient way (gold invested vs gold gained) to farm gold as f2p, but you can actually lose gold, if you do poorly (which you might as a new player), but at the same time, ultimately the "only" way you can learn arena is just by playin it (ofc reading some helpful guides like from shadybunny and watching streams helps). If you didnt use your free ticket, you might want to do that, just so you know if you would like the format and would consider investing the gold you have into it, but knowing basics about every class is kinda a good thing, to at least know what cards can you potentially expect to play against. Goin in blindly might be short lived.
If you rly just started and have only 900g it might be the best to either buy 10 KFT or WW packs (KFT for a chance on a death knight) and WW for the most current cards or just buy Classic packs, generally its best for new players to build up decent Classic collection first, tho the guaranteed legendary in first 10 packs of each set is appealing too.
Btw zoolock is a good deck to start with, you can build a very cheap budget option and since its a fast deck, even if you lose a lot, your games r fast so you can play more games and win eventually :) Tho i would say that tempo mage is not a bad start either, most of the basic mage cards r very good and you just put some good 2/3/4 drops in the deck and usually finish off your opponent with fireball(s) face :)
Dont be affraid to go into ranked, whats the worst that can happen? you lose some stars, like you care about at this point (and if you reach at least rank 20 - you cant even lose stars from 25 to 20 - you will get the lowest end of the month chest, which is some minor dust and a golden common card = basically free stuff, so play ranked at least a little bit, not much time left, tomorrow is a new month) ... but i suppose if you lose 9/10 games that is no fun, so then i would try and stay in casual, tho playin casual is by far no guarantee to not play vs ranked decks, just sayin.
Anyway, good luck and hope you will enjoy the game ;-)

I kind of disagree man, especially if ur new, 1600 dust is such value, could build a competitive deck right there.. u might open jaraxxus normal again.. then just keep it, gold is something for rich completion is the collectors to worry about imo, OP has been blessed to receive such a nice dust offering from lord Yogg
I wouldn't "focus" on a class necessarily. I find that it creates a negative experience simply because if you ever want to switch your classes and have spent all your dust on one class, you're screwed. And good luck!
As I understand it, he has a regular Jaraxxus AND another golden card (he doesn't wanna DE)...and I agree with that, only disenchant goldens once you have them in regular...or if they're really, really bad (Kidnapper or whatever it's called lvl bad)
1) To start, it's probably best to focus on one deck you like to play that you can then use to get more cards. For me, way back in the day (about 3 years ago) it was a custom secret mage deck. Literally nobody knew how to play against it because at the time mages were the 9th most played class, and anyone who was playing mage was probably playing freeze mage. Once you get some gold and dust and things you can then work on the arena to get more cards, or just buy packs if you aren't good enough for that yet.
One thing I did for a long time, after getting my initial deck, was to only craft neutral cards, so that if I changed decks, I could still potentially make use of them elsewhere.
2) I normally keep some gold as a cushion against bad arena runs, and spend the rest on packs.
3) I don't recommend dusting anything you don't have extras of. If you get some golden cards, since they give far more dust, you could dust those, especially if they aren't good cards.
4) I think that's no longer available. (A huge mistake by Blizzard; it literally costs them $0 to have it available for purchase, and it's pure profit whenever someone buys it with real money. If someone buys it with gold... well, they had enough gold to buy something else, anyway)
5) Always do at least 5 ranked wins per month so that you get the monthly cardback. I'd then suggest going to at least rank 20 for the end of month chest as well. I'd recommend going to 15 as well, to get a better reward, and rank 15 should be a cakewalk.
6) Build your own decks. Most people blindly netdeck and have no idea what they're doing or even why some of the cards are in the deck rather than others. If you build your own deck, you'll learn how to make a deck with a proper curve (having appropriate numbers of early, midgame, and lategame cards), you'll learn how to pick cards that work well together, and most importantly, you'll have more fun. Most streamers aren't actually very good from what little I've seen. Two that are good (but only do arena) are ADWCTA and Merps. For constructed... I literally don't know of any that are worth watching.
7) Maybe; I've never tried this. I've got a large friends list going though.
8) I have no idea what this means.
9) Haven't looked recently. I don't netdeck. I'll occasionally look at the front page hearthpwn decks just to see what everybody else is doing so that I know what their decklists are, but that's it.
Best advice ...just play. Understand tempo, value, early/mid/late game etc. Dont become salty and angry at the game. Rng will happen , good and bad. As a magic player myself (since mercadian masques) just try to learn something new each day about the game and you'll become better.
If you really want to invest in this game buy the account that someone quit , it is very much cheaper than you open pack yourself . I mean a lot cheaper. You open 40 pack got by average 2 legendary , you can compare the price . And you will instant have many card and play what ever class you want and know what class and play style fit to you.

This is pretty true. Some people claim it's all rng; others claim it's rigged. All of that is false. There is certainly some rng, but it's a much smaller factor than a lot of people claim.
Your ability to know what your opponent might play, combined with your knowledge of your own deck and how it functions, are very important. Over enough games, the rng factor levels out; this is why the best players in the game always end up at the top of the ranks.
Thanks a TON for all the helpful replies. I have read everything and will be applying it. Plan to read the "bunny" arena guide and try my luck once I get some time off work. Also nearing level 20 on my zoolock to plan to start tavern brawl this week hopefully.
If I buy 10 classic packs but I already have a (non gold) legend from the $5 starter pack, do I still get a legend from classics? If so I'm gonna invest in those then use the gold moving forward for arena and the second to newest sets (have 1K gold now). Just wanna get a little better before hitting arena so I am not totally discouraged and losing gold there. Will also try my luck at ranked.
Also, will I need to craft cards to make a decent budget zoolock? If so I guess I eventually have to dust. For now I will only dust extra/excess cards as y'all advised me.
Other question is after I buy packs since I obviously won't have many cards for a good budget netdeck, after I make a deck myself can I post here or is there a way to get critique on it?
thanks again everyone for the help. Makes the game a lot more enjoyable for me.
2) Like some others have said, opening 10 packs of each type will always yield a legendary, but to expand on that, it's not always the 10th pack. I'd recommend buying each pack individually and opening right after in case your first legendary for the set is actually in the 3rd or 4th pack. Once you open that Legendary, your odds of hitting another one sharply drop, so move onto the next set you havn't got your Legendary from. There's a whole bunch of data pointing to the fact that there is a "pity-timer" for opening Legendary cards. Read up on it before you start opening lots of packs.
3) I'd keep your gold card until you get 2 non-gold, but dusting gold cards is essential for F2P players if they want to fill out their collection
Do not dust Jaraxxus! Do not dust legendaries in general, EXCEPT if they are a really bad one and golden! (So you're essentialy trading them up for whichever you want). He wouldn't get 1600 for lord J. Only 400 as it's not golden. Totally not worth it and Jaraxxus will win plenty of games at lower ranks.
my bad i thought he had golden jaraxxus

You can't stop the signal.
