So let me start by saying, I've been playing Hearthstone since the first few months of its release and love the game. I've gotten countless 12 wins in arena and as far as rank 1 in ranked play. I have played a ton, but have a serious question at this point in the game:
Why play the standard format? I'm not trolling, I'm looking actual reasons why people play the standard format over Wild or Arena. I've played around 50 standard games since the expansion and I probably won't play too many more. It's at a point in hearthstone where, each expansion, everyone gravitates to one of 3-4 decks. In the recent past it's been Razakus, Big priest, Jade druid, to now with cube lock and paladin. So far I feel like 80-90% have been one of those two things - cube lock or even/odd paladin. How is this preferable to playing in wild where there are many more solid decks that you can hit high ranks with? Or arena, where you can have a different experience every draft? Why do people stick to a format where, generally, only 3-5 decks are mainly played?
Again, I'm really looking for honest answers to why people are playing that format. I'd like to enjoy standard, but I just don't see the draw over the other two formats where there is much more diversity.
I know a lot of people, f2p included gravitate to it because it's MUCH cheaper to play, you only have to focus on 3-6 sets as opposed to ones that were released extremely long ago.
Personally i play standard because of the same argument you make regarding standard that everyone plays the same deck; if I drop into ranked wild the decks i'll see are all Secret Paladin, Reno decks and Jade Druid; all 3 of which are ridiculous to try and play against and aren't fun in the slightest.
I agree - you can see way more decks in wild, and more things work
I am playing only mill druid and quest rogue and hovering around rank 3 (missing cards from both but can stay high due to huge range of decks i can beat)
Every time i queue i never know what i will face, vs standard which is linear
Personal whenever a new standard rotation happens i play standard way more often, towards the end of the standard of the whatever year is i shift more towards wild. I played HS since launch so of course i like playing all craziness thats in Wild but i do like standard for its merits as well.
As an avid lover of wild, I’ve recently stopped playing it for two reasons. Not because of loatheb, reno jackson, oracle, or iceblock...none of those cards should be reasons to NOT play wild. My problem with wild is NAGA SEA WITCH. Turn 5 fill your board with 8/8s. Only poison seeds, and lightbomb can beat it. If you’re lucky you have frost nova with doomsayer. It’s incredibly annoying, and also big priest. Those two decks really piss me off.
To answer your question - I think people play Standard for 1 of 3 reasons (or a combo of them)
1) Predictable - which means you can create consistent decks easily (good for new players)
2) Card Collection - some don't have a lot of cards so they feel the barriers to play wild decks is higher
3) Do what Streamers do - a lot of the popular streamers play Standard, so they watch their style, play their decks in the same format
Same boat - currently rank 3 in Standard but I have been playing wild a lot more this season and working may way up and having fun while doing it (From 18 to 7 right now). I switched to Wild because I kept encountering the same decks even 2 days after the release. It seemed people gave up on creativity (at least in Standard), which is predictable...but usually you have a week or so of fun variety. Once I started being able to predict the cards in every deck for 99% of my matches (and only facing about 3-4 decks consistently), I decided to go play for a while in Wild hoping the creativity of the expansion was more existent.
People have said, but Anyone who started playing since the introduction of wild have limited access to the cards and can't afford it
I've played since Naxx, but I still play standard because people are always tinkering with the new cards and the limited card pool. It feels current, and generally fresh. Especially at the start of an expansion.
For me, a F2P account (or mostly free- the pre-order this last time was just too much to pass up on), Standard give me the best experience. I can stay competitive in Standard but Wild, there is sooo much I don't have and won't have- the playing field is a bit more level. I also like how the meta fluctuates more... I mean Old Gods are gone, Karazan gone, Mean Streets gone, those game styles are extinct. It is adapt or die. The first few days of the meta was mass chaos: aside from Cubelock, no one knew what was any good and EVERYTHING was being called OP... I love it. And right now there are about 5-6 decks everyone is playing out there but then the meta is going to settle and folks are going to go back to stuff that worked before... then the nerfs... and then about 2.5 months in things will finally settle and the hype for the next xpac will start up. Wild just seems like a more consistent/ tamer experience. Ya it would be great to have all the cards... and if I did then ya I would probably play Wild more but I really like Standard.
I've grinded to legend in Standard, and now I can stay above rank 5 in standard if I try just a little bit every month.
I don't want to grind from rank 25, now that the 5 star system goes all the way there haha.
Also I've read too many horror stories about giants. Giants, everywhere. And there's more broken combos. I at least know what I'm playing against in standard, and that's a bit more fun (I know lots of people won't like this point/will disagree entirely, but whatever).

For starters, Standard is the competitive format. There are very few Wild tournaments.
The best Wild decks are super powerful. If you choose to play an off-Meta deck in the Wild for fun/novelty, you get blown out.
Arena is a meme. Until Blizzard lets us know exactly what the offering rates are for every class, it stays a joke. Draft great - 12 wins. Draft bad - forget about it.
Please no. If people stop and think how stale standard is for too long they'll come to wild instead and then the exact same thing will happen there.
Seriously though standard is much easier to make decks for though, especially now when the card pool is at its smallest. That said I think there's another factor at play that people are overlooking - I'd be willing to bet there's some people who like to play standard specifically because it's so predictable (not that they'd necessarily admit it). Often you can call out exactly what your opponent's first half dozen turns are just by their turn 1 play and I imagine for some it's kind of reassuring having that level of knowledge about what you're up against.
Personally the main reason I play standard is to enjoy the period of experimenting after a new xpac (sadly seemed to mostly be over within just a few days this time) and to get easy wins for dailies because my standard rank is always in the gutter.

Do or do not. There is no try.

I have c. 15 wild cards... No buying wild packs with gold = no wild for me. Actually, they want that.

It’s actually cheaper to play in wild.
and because turn five 5/5 + six 8/8s isn't fun.
big priest resurrecting fifty fucking ragnaroses isn't fun
mysterious challenger is still broken.
and i like a refreshing meta with cards that don't see any play anymore.
