Last December, I logged out of the Hearthstone client and haven't played since.
I was spending too much time and money on the game ("just one more game" syndrome and over $1200 spent over 3 years). I'm good with the decision to stop and am over the urge to go back.
However, I still follow HS, I watch streams, still read the news stories, etc. Is anyone else in this boat? Does anyone else follow games they don't play?
I follow NALCS (and have never once played LoL), and I've played only a tiny bit of Overwatch but am really enjoying OWL and watch it pretty religiously.
The demographic of those who don't play a game but follow esports competition or streamers who play the game is, I'd guess, one that esports investors are really, really interested in. Will be instructive to see what others say in this thread.

Good for you to have the will to stop, when it was clearly not healthy for you. That being said, you might want to take the next step and stop following the rest as well, or you might fall back into the spiral, tho you might still be there, depending on how often do you check for the stuff around the game :o
When I took a couple years off this game (I was just bored, I don't even recall being particularly frustrated at the time), I still followed Hearthpwn a bit. I got to take part in everyone else's frustration (re: secret paladin, reno meta, shamanstone haha). I think I took the right time off =P.
Other than that, I quit playing League a loooong time ago but I still follow the LCS, and especially follow playoffs and tournaments throughout the year haha. I still haven't even felt any urge to play that game at all, even after still watching it.

No, he/she spent €1200 on entertainment for three years. There are far more costly forms of entertainment. Presumably he/she enjoyed the game for most of that time but started not to so left. Seems sensible to me. Carrying on doing something you’re not enjoying because you put money into it in the past would be more worthy of your sarcasm.
totally true... it's like a 30-40$ par month on a thing you enjoy/hate-love/spend-a-lot-of-time... if you consider playing games a bad way to spend your free time, then I can agree... but new games cost around 50$ and you'll play most of them for a few weeks and throw them away...
PS: I'm also spending around 200$ per expansion, so I know his pain/joy... ^^
I still play but I haven't spent a penny on the game for at least two years. Before that my tally was about £300-400. It's a small but decent chunk of change. I continue to play but I do it casually even more so now since I haven't been bothering to get Legend cause of certain cards.

I have mine too: From time to time i spend 20 bucks in the game too, and im not judging the players who buy the pre-order expansion, It's perfectly fine imo.
But when you spend this amount of money that means 3 things:
You are just a stupid kid: You have no bills to pay at end of the month (also you can reach legend and/or have 4/5 of the FULL collection with some dedication)
You are trying so hard that you are depressive (the fun of the game, once again imo, is achieving all the goals by myself... Not just throwing their money an then leave because even with all collection they are still bad )
You are millionaire
People need to understand that's HS is a Game and (IMO) if, like everything in life, you took it too far it's start to seems desperate.
For sure, there are times when playing a game can reach a point where it can mimic other types of addiction and dependency (i.e. Gambling, substances, etc.) and when this is the case it is best to separate oneself from whatever is causing these feelings. I am a recovering alcoholic and during the early stages of recovery I played an MMO for an unhealthy amount of time and spent a lot of IRL money on it too to the point where I realized that I had replaced one dependency for another. When a game feels like a job you are doing because you feel compelled, from either inordinate desires or external pressures, then it ceases to be an escape and instead becomes a prison in its own right. I'm sorry that HS was the game that made you feel that way, but hopefully one day it can become an escape for you once again and enjoy it responsibly.

Good call on quiting. $1200 is not amount one should spend on any game.
It's all relative, some people would spend that on one meal out with the family quite easily. Would you tell them $1200 is not an amount to spend on dinner?
its your decision, but pls dont stay here to say HS is garbage. just saying....i see so many people here are talking bad about HS, but there still here. makes no sense to me
I'm on the same boat as you. Although the game wasn't Hearthstone, I spent about $850+ in 4 years playing EA Madden NFL. Do I regret it? Absolutely. Now I'm recovering from those 4 years.

I still follow Hearthpwn, even though I don’t post here anymore.

I have no time for games.
I used to still follow YGO even though I stopped playing. But I've stopped following it.

1,200? 400 a year? you only need to spend £50 pre order per expansion 3x a year, you went a bit overboard imo
It's just your opinion.

People should consider that maybe 1200$ isnt that much money in his country. Also good decision.
