I prefer to have a larger collection than a shiny one. That said, some golden cards are too good to pass on.
Anyway I try to be conservative in the dusting, doing it only if I already own two normal copies and only if I really need some dust. At least whenever I use a card from the Basic set I can put it golden!
Last thought: as much as I like golden cards in general, I don't like full-golden decks. I think golden cards should stand out, but if the whole deck is golden this doesn't happen. If I could, I would craft in golden the staple cards of a deck I love to play. Or cards that I like anyway. As of now I'm playing Spiteful Priest, a deck I like but not that much, if instead I loved it I would probably craft two golden Duskbreakers, they are awesome!
I think its a nice chunk of content that Hearthstone offers, but personally don't keep most of my golden cards, unless my non-golden versions of a specific card are less than 2. Gotta have 2 of everything at the end of the day : )
My current practice is to dust pretty much every golden card I get unless dusting that card would leave me without a play-set. I only just recently opened my first golden legendary, which happened to be Lyra the Sunshard. Since she looks cool and can actually be played, I'm not going to dust it, but if it had been Millhouse Manastorm or some equally abominable Legendary, I'd have dusted it faster than you can say "Hostile entities detected."
I have a very competitive and nearly complete collection. When i reach certain milestones, i craft myself a golden card or three. Just hit legend with paladin so I crafted a pair of Righteous Protector and Knife Juggler. And then i ran out of dust... even common golden cards are $pen$o!
I love golden cards. Its a shame the border change too but i like the animations so much. A non golden card looks so dead. My collection has now more than 1000 golden cards. I think im almost alone with this many golden cards. For me its cool to see the animations in every game, it makes the games more alive. :)
The only time I disenchant a Golden card is if it is a Shaman card, it is rotating to Wild, or it is being moved to Hall of Fame.
The only time I actually craft them is if it is for a deck that I absolutely love and know I will play for a long time. Like Cubelock. I have crafted a few Golden cards for it here and there.
I'm very pragmatic and I dusted all my golden cards (some of them I crafted normal later). Another reason not keeping those is my tablet stutter the more animations there are. And the final reason is I actually like static image instead of animation, it somehow affects me deeper and some of the animations are just very poor. There are golden cards that I actually like, mostly purple/blueish color like some warlock cards and some of the paladin cards are very good in gold.
i only preserve golden cards when: - It's a good legendary (no Nat Pagle i.e. which i DE'd and crafted Dr. Boom a few years ago) - Don't have the normal ones (happened with Shadowflame. Got both golden before getting them in normal XD) - It's a pretty good card (Shadowflame i.e.) - It looks nice.
All golden cards of rare quality or higher ( commons just aren't worth the meager amount of dust ) are immediately dusted so long as I have two copies, or one in the case of legendaries, to craft cards I don't own.
The only exception to this rule are golden cards gained through gifts. Meaning Blizz / Itunes gift cards I redeem for packs. Even in those cases, the smile from playing them comes from the thought of the person giving me the gift and not the golden card itself.

For me, I'm not good enough to reach legend. So I need another satisfaction condition. Grinding a full gold classic set helps with that.
Golden Hero Collections thus far; -
Europe: Druid, Hunter, Paladin, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, Warrior (9/9)
Americas: Druid, Mage, Paladin Shaman (4/9)
Everywhere else: Workin on it.. (0/9)

I don't care about owning golden cards because if I actually want to look at them, I can always just look them up on the good old internet.
To me, game time isn't really the best time to be appreciating aesthetics. Indeed, if a card is too pretty (and animated), it might be a distraction.
