I think that due to the nature of MtG, it will always be clunky. There are a lot of interactions, or potential interactions, after every phase and decision, so the gameplay will be less smooth. In HS, for example, you don't do anything when it isn't your turn, and then act during your turn with little interruptions (secrets are the only ones, and you know when they are active). This just feels smoother than MtG where you have the opportunity to act or make decisions multiple time during your opponent's turn, as well as having to wait for you opponent to act or pass after nearly everything that you do during your turn. By nature, I think MtG will always have a tough time converting to a strong mobile model due to all of the interactions and action points without fundamentally changing the game.
I haven't tried it but I've tried some of the others like Hex and Eternal and I just don't like the over complication of blocking, air and ground units, weather conditions etc. It's great for those that want that level of complexity but I just want it simple which is what Hearthstone does right!
Been playing the beta for awhile, it is fun, especially if you like MTG. But with only 2 sets in the beta it limits the builds and variety so it is tough to get a great grasp on the total fun factor yet. Only thing that bothered me so far is the way you tap, it is a small tilt rather then a full tap which is a little odd to me.
Its tough to compare it to Hearthstone, it is just a much more complex game.
Anybody playin the beta of MTG Arena? How does it compare with hearthstone?
Gameplay wise it tries to mimic the card game but it makes each turn... ..clunky... imho
what are your thoughts?

Basically agree.
Will MTG Arena pick up as much as hearthstone though?
Any idea on the player base now?

magic is a far better game in real world but hearthstone is better online
Prepare to be boarded.
