Idk what to do, the only thing left in this game I want is to get Legend, but often times when I lose I just quit in frustration
It's not even that it happens frequently, it could be a standard 55% win rate, which is apparently legend quality. There's something about only winning 11 games out of 20 that rubs me the wrong way. I majored in stats. The difference between 50% and going nowhere and 55% and getting legend is literally 1 win out of 20 games. Except it's more. Because if that loss happens during a win streak, instead of going up a star, you go down 2, for a net difference of 3. It's like a loss is 3 times more than a win.
Idk if there's something coded in me that won't allow me to climb, but it's frustrating. I started playing again for the first time in over half a year a little over a week ago, made a control lock deck, won 100% of the games from 22 to 14, then lost two times in a row and just quit because I rationalized it as it being the best deck in the format but I can't even get past rank 14. But, literally 2 games is not a sample size worthy of anything.
Idk what to do. It's not even an issue of just grinding out more. The rank is reset each month. Like, I can play maybe 1-2 hours a day. That can translate to as little as 7-8 games of control. If I go 50-50, I literally spent 2 hours in ranked to go absolutely nowhere. Seems like a lost cause
You are talking about getting to the top 0.5% of players. Of course its a hard grind! Take any game and it is by no means easy to get to that top rank. It's a hard challenge and its a grind. Just keep it up, don't let it get to you. Play to have fun, not just to rank up and you'll get there in no time. I believe in you.
Successful people experience a lot of failure before they are successful. I recommend prioritizing perseverance. Look at those games as a process of practice/ self improvement. It's not a good idea to make legend your goal. (Unless you are already at rank 5 or so) Only a tiny percent of the population reaches that point so most aren't getting there. You want to focus on improving your play which is an attainable goal that you can feel good about. If you do that you may eventually reach legend. You want to feel good about your progress which is integral to self improvement which is a requirement. Don't worry about losses, you can watch Asmodai rank down from top 1 legend all the way to legend 1,100. He's not deterred by it. Winners lose all the time, don't be afraid to lose. Develop the process, don't focus on the results is an old adage but a true one.
Because if that loss happens during a win streak, instead of going up a star, you go down 2,
I don't know where you're getting this information but that's not how it works. You only ever lose one star for a loss.
I wrote it backwards - you go down one instead of up two - but it's still a net change of 3
On top of that, you're now at the first of 3 wins needed for a win streak instead of already being on 1
And, at rank 5, it just goes away entirely - so now your 55% win rate translates to moving up 10 stars every hundred games, putting you at needing 250 games to hit legend
There are some graphs that might help you out. It was a real eye opener for me.
Also, 1 more thing. It goes in every video-game ever: DON'T PLAY ON TILT. It never ends well and it causes more harm than good. Take a break if you need to.

Err no, it's a net change of 1. You never earned the other two.

I kinda understand what he is getting at tho. It is a net change of 1 but it feels worse than that because goodbye win streak.

That's correct but hitting rank 5 is pretty easy if you play a good deck and don't autopilot. It should be even easier now with the ranked changes, since you need only climb at least 5 ranks to make progress month to month.

Eh, just been playing a lot of getting over it with Bennett Foddy. His words inspire me XD
I find myself getting tilted also by the RNG/bad matchups/opponent having perfect draws/answers. I do 1 of two things when this happens.
1. I say to myself "meh they were lucky, that had nothing to do with my play" (for example I lost a game today where I had 9 cards in hand and was forced to have to play a doomguard...I couldn't afford to lose two of those other 8 cards (gul'dan and voidlord), guess what happened? Yep the system picked those two cards instead of the stupid mortal coils and aoe's (4 of them). Lost me the game. Just had to laugh at the absurdity that of all 8 possible cards to get discarded those two were the ones.
2. Just quit and play something else/do something else like watch tv or a movie or something. Come back after you've lost that tilt.
Hopefully then you'll be in a better frame of mind and can get back on those win streaks.
P.S. also win streaks are much harder to come by after rank 10 where they are a lot easier under that.
dude, sorry to say but if you are getting to rank 14 and quitting you are so far away from hitting legend it doesnt even make sense to think about tis (right now). Imagine going to rank 1 and hitting a lose streak :D
I think you are overestimating this game. Dont let some of the people fool you, HS is not a rocket science. It is way too simple game for its own good. It was designed as a casual game (competitive HS my a**). Starting with only three card is a joke. It means that you have to be lucky to win. The simplicity of this game (destroy your opponent's health) seriously limiting design space.
Game was basically designed as RnGstone. Games are won or lost based on your mulligan, first four draws and your opponent class (rock-paper-scissors). When you are a newbie you don't realise most of these things, more you play more you realise this.
Anyways as long as you dont take this game serious and play it here and there causally you should be alright.

I think your comment belongs in the Salt Thread, so much butthurt in just a few paragraphs. Games are lost and won on mulligan in every card game, that's the nature of card games.
Of course there's a difference of 1 win between climbing and staying stationary. There's a difference of 1 game between staying stationary and losing ranks. That's true whether it's 11 wins out of 20 games, or 51 wins out of 100 games. You'll still climb, if you can spare the time.
And it's not a net loss of 3 stars when you lose on a winning streak. That mentality will only make you more salty; you haven't earned those 2 stars. You're not gambling with 3 stars. You're gambling with 1 star to earn 2.
You're right about one thing, though: I can confirm that it IS in fact hard coded to prevent the username 'ayanakm' from climbing past rank 5. Sorry.

Such a dangerous comment!
With making games we are limited to only our imagination. When people get stuck on antiquated ideas like putting mana in your starting deck (I hate this mechanism in MtG!) we can't create better games. Take for an example Mage Wars card game in which players start with actual spellbooks (card binders with cool art) with all the cards available to them from the beginning!
Imo a great game needs to have a reasonable way to get back in the game even if your starting hand wasn't exactly what you wanted and the opponent had a great start.
well if you can't get past rank14 its a loooong way till legend. don't even bother about that yet. think about getting r10 first, then r5. that way you will have some successful moments.
also stop playing only control lock, games can take forever and then you made no progress after playing for 3 hours so it will feel like wasted time.
i just used control lock and murloc pally for my legend climb for example. that way games will feel different and playing 10 intense contrlock warlock games in a row can be pretty exhausting tbh, so being pissed and tired is defo NOT a good combination and mindset to get some climbing done.
With the adjustment to the ladder system your'e set back 4 ranks every month.
Just concentrate on climbing some ranks every season and eventually you will be at legend ^^
And, to be able to climb to legend (or 10/5/etc) just playing a tier 1 deck and grinding with it is NOT enough. You can't just copy a deck from the internet and expect to get to legend with it.
You need a fond knowlegde of the game, of every matchup, of the cards in your deck and the cards in your opponents deck. You need to know what hes 'probably' doing next turn and what you can do this turn to make it harder for him or what you have to keep to counter his play. Try to come up with a gameplan at the start of the game and pursue it.
Keep playing, keep improving, keep having fun. (It's a game, having fun is the number one purpose.)
If you want to climb and youre frustrated by losing control vs control games after a long time, try playing some aggro stuff? The matches are much shorter :P And, try to play some kinda off-meta decks, the most played decks are the best known by your opponents, they know how to beat you :P Like, i had huge success this season with playing Zoo-Warlock, it's a great deck (around 60% winrate) but you barely (~4% of all warlocks are zoo according to vicious syndicate) see it. So, most people you queue into will mulligan for a cube/control warlock and you have it easier to beat them.

Hmm ... these don't match. Time to re-think. Grinding for legend unless you have huge buckets of free time is kind of insane.
