What is more worthy? If you get 3+ wins in Arena you have the pack and the 50g back, with the possibility to bigger prizes if you run a good Arena. I see a lot of users buying packs, why?
Mainly because the average player will lose gold, so it would be smarter (gold-wise) to directly but packs.
Statistically 50% of the arena runs will end up with 0-2 wins, and only 33% will be a 4+ wins runs, so unless you're above average arena player you will lose gold.
Also because if you grind for 5+ or legend every month, and you have a life outside of your computer, you don't have time for ranked and arena.
In my case, I play mostly arena atm because I'm tired of the meta. I average 4.6 wins, I used to be around 6 during KoFT. To the stats fans above: the more you play it, the better you get.
just last night went 6-3 took about 2 hours 15min, got 1 pack + 75g + 45g. so I bascically bought a pack for 30gold and played for 2 hours. I'd say that average expectation for most players. rewards strongly need to be adjusted IMO
Same as with quests and arena. You grind for gold, getting no fun. Easier to buy packs and just enjoy the game, but you have to have the job for that, where you can put your extra grinding hours into.
I would recommend arena for all new players that need to learn the game while building his collection, ladder or casual will be an awful experience for anyone that has limited dust/collection.
I have played since beta and been legend several times, is not F2p and still grind arena to further build my collection (ya i want a full golden deck in the future). It´s by far the most effective and fair way to build your collection (fair in the way you compete on equal terms).
So ya go play more arena unless you are among the players competing for those top 100 legend spots.

I feel that packs from arena reward have slightly better chance to contain legendaries in them. I got two of my latest legendaries exactly from arena reward packs, same goes for my friend - he noticed that as well. Ofc it might be just some RNG favor, but still.
I would say always do arena if you are good at the game, because every second spent in arena is one second not spent playing against endless walls of warlocks and aggro paladins in ranked. That said, arena can be frustrating. If you win your first couple of games (or sometimes even at 0-0) you'll see absolutely absurd decks and you very well could end up 1-3 or so even if you drafted and played every game correctly. If it were a one-off thing I'd say the safer bet is just buy the pack, but if you're thinking of doing it multiple times I would say go with arena.

I´m very casual(fulltime job, kids/wife and split my gametime between HS and LoL) mostly just log in to get the quests done and yet i get rank 5 every season (just use one of the seasons tier 1 decks). It usually take me about two-three weeks, rest of my gametime i spend in arena for maximizing rewards vs time spent ingame.
I would recommend this for players with a collection enough to build atleast one of the seasons tier one decks(else grind for rank five might not be worth it and would instead be time better spent in arena)

I am a pretty decent arena player .99 percent of the time I get over 3 wins and usually around 5 or better so it's not that I lose gold but I don't gain much either.
That being said I don't enjoy arena at all. There is basically a single strategy that most people play : play on curve and make good trades . While this is fun and interesting for new players it's very boring to play over and over again.
Unfortunately building a fun deck in arena almost always results in easy defeats. That's why I prefer constructed.

Wait a minute. You're saying rewards need to go up because it took you over two hours to earn a cheap pack? Million dollar question: did you, you know, have fun during that time?? Because lest we forget, this is a game that is supposed to be fun. If you're forgetting to have fun and you're looking for the most efficient way to gain cards and gold, then what are you even in this for?
And there's your answer OP, give Arena an honest shot for a bunch of runs to see if you like it. Answer's pretty easy after that.
Mainly because the average player will lose gold, so it would be smarter (gold-wise) to directly but packs.

wow so i might actually be better than i thought. how about that

You're in a forum surrounded by others who are in the forum, all of whom put enough effort and care into the game to want to spend time outside the game talking about the game. You probably watch tournaments where the top players play regularly. You are surrounded by folks who score high rankings, high arena runs, and generally focus on being the top end of the game.
What you don't see is that you are about .01% of the hearthstone population that are involved in these activities. Most people who play know nothing about hearthpwn. most people who play probably don't even watch the tournaments. Most players just log in, play a few games, then move on, the game forgotten.
Simply posting on a forum pegs you as 'above average'. #(*)$# LOOKING at this thread right now has already plopped you into 'above average'. If you consider rank 5 an option.. not even GETTING there, just that you feel you CAN make it there seriously, you are above average.
Even with the stats showing that half of the population can't get past 3 wins on average, that still means every single forum user in hearthpwn, every poster in reddit, and probably every person who watched the HTC championships can all be 5-win average arena players and we STILL wouldn't hit close to 50%.
So yeah, the whole argument that "you can't suggest arena because half of the people can't get there" is bunk. If you are reading this text, there's room for you in the upper half. There's an endless swarm of casual players who can supply the losses you need to get there.
So yes, if you don't hate arena, and getting 3 wins isn't a hard thing for you to do, it's ALWAYS better to play arena over buying packs. That INCLUDES that big mass of gold you hoard for the next expansion. If you're holding 6000 gold at expansion time and you don't mind running 40+ arena runs then (#)$# run them.
Pack opening is for folks who hate arena, folks who are bad at arena, the impatient that want to get right into Ranked, and the folks who can find a better use of their time rather than spamming arena. All valid reasons. But if you arn't among them then yes, spam arena.
I don't do it even if I could "earn more gold" because:
A) I'm busy ranking up on ladder and I'm not a streamer so I can't play 8+ hours a day. I'm lucky to get in 1 hour a day except for weekends.
B) I don't like Arena why should I play it??
C) I can buy packs by playing ranked and completing my dailies and buy packs for the first 6 weeks of an expansion and STILL horde enough gold to buy an additional 30-35 packs with the next expansion.
As F2P I’m not doing either. No packs and no arena... I am saving gold for the next expansion. I would like to play arena but normally I cycle between saving gold and getting as many packs I can until have most of what I want. Then back to saving gold. So I’m pretty trash at arena and it always ends up feeling like a waste.

Arena just takes a lot of time xD (I also enjoy arena a lot)

The goal of all life is death.
like I mentioned before 2 hours got me 1 pack. I'm better off working 2 extra hour and getting paid then spending that money on a 40 pack.

Fuck this stupid, brainded netdeck game. Buy pack and leave.
40+ Trades in Challenge a Friend! quest.

No brain - no pain.

Also, you don't get 10 gold for winning 3 games in Arena like you do in casual or constructed modes.
