And i dont just mean stick a secret eater into your pile of 30 cards and just hope your draw spot on time. I mean whats the current counter deck? warlock plays too slow to beat it and priests dont have any big minions out until turn 4 and by that time theyve been blasted by runes, mixed emotions on paladin because their board is so fragile, full of 1 or 2 health minions; any form of AOE is gg
im tilted playing mages and getting burned out at the last minute every game, i need some time off
Forget the crap eater of secrets, put 1 mana 2/2 both players gain 4 life and 2 manas 2/3 gain 3 armor in deathrattle, both counter 6 damage secret and is not useless vs others agressive decks.
You can't give free turn 1 and 2 for them, you can't recover the game if you do, making this 2 options much better than eater.
Go with Murloc Paladin. The tribal synergies secures a pretty resilient board, and the ability to refill with Call to Arms and Divine Favor (when they have equipped Aluneth) also gives you reach. If you really want to punish Secret Mage, you could tuck in an Ooze and EoS too, but it should normally be quite unnecessary.
This is purely anecdotal, but Eater of Secrets doesn't even seem like that effective of a counter given the trade-off of how useless it is in other matchups. Even if you have it on curve, if they cheat out an early secret with Kabal Lackey, what do you? Do you just hold it and take a bunch of damage to the face? No; more likely you're going to have to contest the board or play some removal and risk triggering them.
Eater was a great tool against freeze mage because when you played it you basically guaranteed yourself a win by destroying the Ice Block. In this matchup it's more or less just a tempo card, and even if you take out an Explosive Runes you're still staring down the barrel of a deck that has 35+ burn damage, incredibly strong tempo plays, and nigh infinite resources if you don't have weapon destruction.
I have a super high win rate with spell hunter. I also run 2 flares in that deck so that works great. In addition there's very little chance of setting off their Explosive Runes. Most likely you set some traps, kill a few creatures, drop the spellstone and they concede.
Control Priest with 2 doomsayers and Duskbreaker is good vs secret mage man. The Duskbreaker is a boardclear without being checked by Counter spell, and you can get more duskbreaker from netherspite too, it is a 50-50matchup if you have The dragon in open hand you are favoured.
Token Shaman destroys secret mage, probably the strongest counter there is. But it's a bad deck against just about everything else so keep that in mind.
Any deck that has a better early game obliterates secret mage, so both murlock and dude paladin are ez game, that deck can't compete with board flods, they can only hope to get a AoE off glyph or they lose, I've played a lot of muloc and dudeadin in the last 2 weeks and -i think I lost like 2 times... the first time was cause my hand was garbage, on turn 3 I had 2 Call 2 arms, Tarim, a Maul that gave minions taunt and I think double blessing of kings with nothing on bard and the mage got a sick curve and the second game he got the nuts, Wyrm coin Lackey into explosive runs into archanologist and then second lackey secret (I think it was counterspell) and Medivh's valet on my terrible tempo rockpool, it also helped that I didn't get 1 of my 8 1 drops, not even protector, other than that secret mage is a laughable match-up for any aggresive/fast paladin, zoolock is also pretty sweet, other than that I guess any other fast deck does fine and as a bonus spell hunter is actually amazing, explosive runes does nothing, you have a bunch of cheap spells to test the counter and the mage can't deal with Barnes on 4 or the Spellstone, they get destroyed.

Anything that goes wide on board really
Secret Mage typically uses no serious AoE, so Token/Aggro decks are a good counter.
Spell Hunter is also favoured, for it lets you ignore the Runes.
Armor/Fatigue decks can also outlast the Mage's arsenal.
That is, as long as you wisely play around Counterspell.

Any paladin deck does the job, after that you've got priests, druids and hunters. That's the winrate of a secret mage deck :
There is no cancer deck in hearthstone ! You are the Cancer !
