Yea, he deserved to win. I loved how fr0zen brought the Mage and the unconventional Violet Teacher Druid to the tournament, but he lost the match when he didn't keep 1 of the UIs in the Jade mirror while Tom did.
I'm not sure he would have got through the semifinal if it wasn't for the super-fortunate draw for him and terrible draw for Surrender. Other than that, he played pretty well, the final came down to the difference between the decks and a few misplays.
I'm a Brit, and take to watching football / soccer often. On occasion my team can totally dominate a match and still lose. The end metric is the result and not the performance.
He won where needed and deserved it. I wanted Fr0zen to win though.
Both players played well in the finals. Either one of them could have won it. Grats to Tom on his win and Frozen has nothing to be down about. He proved the meta is not solved with his deck choices. Special shout out to Sintolol for also bring unconventional decks and proving the meta isn't solved.
There is no "deserve" in hearthstone tournament play. He deserved to make the tournament, but beyond that it is all down to luck and draws and playing your deck the way it is designed to be played. Talent is only mildly relevant in this game. Any one of the players in this tournament are good enough to be considered the world champion. You can't hold it against someone when they don't draw their answers and the opponent does, that is not skill, it's luck.
The real challenge is playing enough to get invited to such a tournament, which is somewhat skillbased but more time-based. Anyone who puts in the effort to get to that stage can win, there is no "best player in hearthstone" like in real sports.
Didn't see the first two matches of the finals, but the last two sucked, and were decided almost entirely by RNG and card draw. There were much better, much more competitive, much more interesting matches in this tourney.
The confetti cannon was a major dick move from blizzard but he kept his cool and showed them all in the end. I loved how frozen was smirking like a little bitch. He showed nerve and had the last laugh, I'm happy for Tom.
Maybe he wasnt the best player, but he is for sure a deserved winner. During these tourneys luck plays a big part, the decks you bring, who you play against and his lineups, deck choices in series and finally the draws.

Tournament play has little to do with the ladder. Completely different formats.
"deserve" is a poor choice of words. Tom "earned " his win. Just like they all "earned" their spot at the worlds. I alsonagree with ababyduck about luck and draw being huge factors in who wins.

Impossible to say it better then this.
All HS competitive scene is a big lie to me, the game fit very well fun and easy plays in free time, not a competitive purposal
If you watch these championships, you can see that HS is not only about being a good player. I watched Kolento playing and he never did any misplay and still he lost 2x 3:2. That being said, you need to have a certain amoun of luck to be able to win.

???
The fifth game was decided by the mulligan - if you are interested, Firebat posted a video a couple months ago (likely on the Omnistone YT channel) explaining the match-ups in which you keep UI in your opening hand - the mirror match happens to be one of those match-ups. With six ramp cards in the deck, Tom was expected to draw at least two of them by turn six. He did, and as he expected he was able to play UI on turn seven, winning the match with the huge tempo boost and refill provided by the card. Frozen didn't keep his UI - he only had about a 50% chance to draw it by the time he expected to have ten mana. Tom correctly played to the strengths of his deck, and Frozen incorrectly played away from those same strengths.
Edit - as a follow-up, I inputted the relevant odds into an online Poker Odds calculator. The chance of drawing two of six "outs" from ten cards in a 29 card deck is 70%. By contrast, the odds that Frozen would draw one of two UIs and two of seven ramps from ten cards is only 43%.
You're never going to see someone win by pure skill in a card game. Ever. Even when the player does something really clever with bad draws to win, they still needed exactly those cards to do it. Everyone gets lucky.

So, here is a poll about our new world champion.
What is your opinion?
Even though I did not vote for him, I think he played phenomenal.
Taking a few risks here and there was probably necessary to come out on top.
He made a misplay that could have lost him the series, but besides that he did fine.

You mean the Leeroy shadowstep, right?
Yeah, that was breathtaking, true.

Ehhh
When you don't win 3-0, you lose 2-3
