I made a F2P account recently just to shake things up and experience life without having a lot of cards and after the first couple days of quests made it to rank 20. I had a quest to win games and thought this won't be too hard, even at the start of the season, if you're playing on a brand new account with almost no cards, the game should recognize that and match you up with similarly unexperienced opponents, right? Nope. Completely wrong.
First three games at rank 20, on a BRAND NEW account that has almost no collection, were against Razakus priest, Aggro paladin, and the Rhokdelar hunter deck. Yes, the Rhokdelar deck isn't tier 1 or anything, but it might as well be for an account that has almost nothing! As far as I could tell these decks had all the cards but I did get understandably destroyed very quickly so I didn't get to see their entire decks.
This isn't a big deal for me because I have a main account with a lot of cards on it and I don't have to worry about the rank 20 experience, but I couldn't help but wonder, how the hell is the matchmaking system so broken where brand new players are getting queued into these kind of decks? Does hearthstone have no ELO system whatsoever? Or do they have one but it doesn't work? If I was actually a new player in this situation I probably would feel so frustrated I'd never want to play hearthstone again. How has this not been addressed or reworked yet after 4 years?
A new player who has very little collection or game knowledge would never be able to win a game again if these are the kind of opponents they are queueing into. I don't know about you guys, but if I'm picking up a game for the first time and don't understand it very well, I would want to be able to play against similar opponents so that I can learn. Getting your face smashed into a wall every time you try to play is the opposite of a good learning experience.
Your previous experience may have led you to this fate. Did you just crush your way to 20? If so, keep trying, it will get easier as your MMR drops from losses. Why ladder even has an MMR is a mystery to me, but then so is 50% of players being at rank 19-20 of 25 ranks.
It's also the start of that month. Everyone has their rank reset, so there's a lot of people at rank 20 with full meta decks. The ranked system doesn't know If you have a full collection or are a fresh account, it just matches you with someone that has similar rank. If you wait until later in the month you will get better matches for a Ftp account.
Also, if you just want to play against other new accounts, most people play casual until they get more/better cards.

There are just so many bad players that don't get the basics of the game... they just aren't that vocal so you mostly don't hear about them other than finding them at the odd ladder rank, my wife is one of those players hahaha
I made a F2P account, built a druid taunt deck, and finished rank 9. I played against many priests and these OP decks but guess what? I destroyed them because they did not expect playing against taunts with buffs... as easy as it gets, I would reach rank 5 if I tried.
It doesnt matter where you play, ranked or not,you will get matched against players who have been legends before,it happened to me when i started my NA arena account.First games where with good decks and some of them were previously legends, and it wasnt in ranked.
Matchmaking mmr and the stuff Blizzard is feeding new players was never true. And like this,i dont see it weird that new players wont give a try after they play for a couple days.
In ranked you get matched with player at your rank obviously.
If you want to get matched with new players as new player you have to play casual and let the MMR and matchmaking do their things.
No idea what you expected. You start with ranked and dont want to get matched with other players at rank 20? Ranked isnt for giving you a good learning experience, it is supposed to be the competitive mode in hearthstone.
Casual isn't a good learning experience either. You win a couple of games in a row then you start matching up with mostly tier 1 decks again. The point is there isn't a good mode in hearthstone for new players outside of tavern brawl and even those sometimes require you to have a decent collection and they're only 4 days a week.

Source? Post the list of your games played in Casual mode, their results and opponents' decks. Besides, if that's true, those players have an MMR so low vecause they suck, and then the matches are actually winnable for you.
I remember as a newbie in TGT and LoE, that i often got matchuped against insane decks, even in Casual - while the best i could afford was a sub-optimal Facehunter. Half my games were against an overwhelming Boom.
It kinda sucks, but how can you avoid it?
As soon as you prove to be worth more than the beginners, there is no way to define in-between opponents, that are neither beginners, nor pros.
One of the issues of HS is that the game as not evolved by a even a bit in all those years under many aspects: new player experience, ranked mode, reward system, matchmaking and so on. Probably when it was released it was the first of its kind and so those things were not so obvious but now that there are lots of new online TGC the flaws of the HS' experience are becoming more and more clear.
Team 5 has now stated for about 2 years about reworking tons of those things to make HS better but until now not even a news or an hint about what and when something will come have been show. A little more comunication will be indeed loved by the community I think.

For what profit is it to a man, if he gains the world and loses his own soul?

There may not be an easy solution. The amount of absolute noobs with all basic decks is very limited. I have an account with less than 30 wins, and the deck i play there has 2 legendaries and only a few basic cards, so may already feel overwhelming to an absolutely new player.
They just may not be able to find an another absolute beginner for you to match up with.....
When first starting the game I had a similar experience. I quit ranked and did nothing but arena for a fee months until I felt I could compete on a level playing field in ranked.
That worked fine, and I think is a fine solution, but some signposting for folks to lead them to arena when they wall in ranked would be helpful.

Not exactly. There is a youtube video of a guy who threw 800 game and faces a rank 25 even though he is at legend.
Hahaha...I can't even begin to imagine the puzzled look on the Rank 25 player when he saw the opponent's rank. "Wtf is that weird number?!?!" I must find this video.
I think that they should implement a system where they also take into account the amount of wins you have on your account. It might not be the optimal way of matchmaking but at least as a beginner you will be facing people with a similar amount of wins on their account. That way, less experienced players will be facing other less experienced players. F2P will be more of a challenge but thats how it's always been.
I wouldn't mind if they took into account the value of your collection. At least a bit. Need to only count gold cards if they don't have the card non-gold and then only as a non-gold card.
Its true, i made a new account, was playing a f2p hunt alone hunter (with the dischanted dust a got) and first day i was 15/0 against new players (all casual games). Then Second day i was matched against full golden heroes and leyend cardback players, razakus, full build jade decks, agrro paladins, cubelocks, etc.

Free to try and find a game, dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain.

Brand new players should not play ranked (past rank 20).

Just Another Legend Player#Kappa
New player experience "like... dog shit" (c) Kripp
And Blizzard said something about improving rank system but still no changes.
One day this game will stop existing. I can't wait.
Well, this is not so new.

There are many horrible Hearthstone players with very large collections
I think that they should implement a system where they also take into account the amount of wins you have on your account. I was born at an incredibly young age
