I'm a long standing player of the game. Friend of mine pointed out that this year a new expansion will be coming and signalling the new Year Of. That means some of the older sets will be retiring. I never play wild exclusively, but I believe I use Wild cards in other ways? I am free to play, and I have been working hard to pick and choose what Legendary cards I craft/or get lucky from free packs. This next round of retiring cards is fairly large for me, and if I'm understanding it correctly, I'll have around 18 Legendary cards that will go to wild - and "never" be played by me again. That is a tempting 7200 dust to be turned around to craft newer legendary cards - but I'm not sure if I still hold fast to the "never dust a legendary" rule. As I reflect, I realize there are certain Curse Of Nax set legendaries that still sit in my "inventory" and I have never played.
So general discussion about what you plan to do/suggestions on dusting or keeping. I understand we have until May(ish) but it will be here faster than you know!

If I were you I would stop and ponder for a while. Ask yourself if you are ever going to play Wild. If not, then dust almost all of the cards that rotate to Wild. Keep the few cards you really enjoy playing in Tavern Brawls.
If you are going to play Wild, you can probably dust 50 % of the cards but I would not dust any card until a card has been Wild-only for at least 1 year. In this way you will not be running the risk of double-crafting.
That is very good article thank you! It is a tough decision because I want to be current and be able to compete, but at the same time I still play just to have fun.

There are plenty of "I regret dusting my Wild cards . . ." threads on hearthpwn, and the subreddit. I've also met plenty of people at Fireside Gatherings with the same regret. Lacking precognition, it seems rash to click the button and get the dust - as you point out, the return on investment is incredibly low, and you'll only get four "free" legendaries for the cost of dusting eighteen. However, you claim to be a "long standing player of the game," and you never play Wild. If you know that you'll only enjoy playing your favourite decks for a year or so, and won't enjoy playing them again any time after that - push the button. You'll have to hope that Blizzard doesn't release any expanded game content in the future which allows Wild cards, and you'll have to accept that you'll have a tougher time competing in some of the Tavern Brawls - but again, if you don't really care, pushing the button seems like a good idea.
I will miss some of the decks? My druid deck is very jade - so I was sad to see that will be going away?
I just face what most free to play players face - long build up of gold to buy packs to dust or get lucky - only to be reset by the next expansion. The retiring of some of the larger sets (like Mean Streets) just seemingly is going to hit me harder than the last one. I hope others will be sharing in my pain?

You are probably the only one who will miss jade lol.
Try to save as much gold as possible for next expansion and try to get as many core cards as possible too.
Blizzard SHOULD do something for the cost of the game this year they said they are gonna change stuff around big time.. (specially ranked mode) this time around so who knows maybe F2P will have better time.. the announcements should come next month they announced the year of the kraken and the year of the mammoth around this time.
There was also talk about perhaps taking some cards back to the the game that have been rotated out, not a full set but like a few cards, like reno is one of those, or perhaps loatheb, so if that was the case, instead of they printing copies of cards taking back intresting cards would be a possibility, then it would be bad to dc.
I hope reno never rotates into standard.. that card is really toxic when the card pool is big.. (every highlander card really)
why? well when the card pool is big having no duplicates is barely a drawback.. having that card without a real drawback is kinda scary.. just like priest is now in wild and even in standard.
IMO wild is the only way to go if you want to be f2p. Because only then you will get most use of all cards that you have ever crafted and no dust will be "wasted".
I've never really thought of it that way? I have always just played Standard, never really thought of playing Wild? It just seemed so unpredictable and chaotic

If you are f2p, Wild actually becomes a better and better option the longer you play ... IF you stop dusting your cards.
You always lose value by dusting cards, so it seems like a very foolish thing to do for someone who is constantly scrimping and saving for every single legendary they craft. If you went out of your way to save up 1600 gold for that card, and you enjoyed using it, why not just keep using it?
Standard is always going to be a hardship for a free player, but Wild only improves over time.

When I start to play, I got Mal'Ganis and after some time I did dust him. It was really unwise decision, but I was in the game too shortly and of course did not know Bloodreaver Gul'dan wil pop up. Even if I "lack" some new legendaries - Dragoncaller Alanna for example, I will not dust any old legendary.

This.
If you mostly play Wild, you'll need to collect far fewer cards with each expansion - and that portion will continue to diminish over time. If you look at the numbers on HSReplays, 18 of the 100 most-played cards in Standard currently come from K&C, while forty-one cards from the new set enjoy play-rates above 2%. Only eight cards from the set see play in the Wild top 100, while only twenty have play-rates above 2%. Given that the F2P model rewards about 20 packs each month for folks who complete their dailies, it isn't too difficult collecting 20ish cards every four months from 80 free packs.
i have to agree with the guys that say that Wild is cheaper in the long run, cards will always cost the same, and since they never rotate out it's not like mtg or yugioh where you have to hand down 100 bucks to a guy for a card of a discontinued pack the company is not printing anymore, standard is great for starting in the game but above all since card prices don't change in hearthstone ocne your standard deck rotates to wild you are far better off crafting wild cards to make Wild adjustments to that deck than disenchanting everything and getting less than 1/4th of the price it costed, it's less than 1/4th because commons just give you 1/10th of their value .
I never played Wild and never will because I started HS month or two before KFT. So I have to craft wild only cards to be able to play just wild. Even after rotation Ill always be few exps behind.
But if you have good "old" cards, then maybe consider trying wild as your cards pool will only increase.
I was the same, a guy who said "I will never play Wild" and dusted my entire Wild collection as soon as I had the chance. The Dungeon Runs showed me the error of my ways. I've genuinely MISSED Reno Jackson, Ragnaros the Firelord, Antique Healbot, Brann Bronzebeard and Duplicate. I just never realized how much. I turned around and crafted Reno and a few other cards and now I have four Wild decks that I play on occasion at low ranks just for fun.

I have written an extended article on the economics of Hearthstone which serves the purpose of helping with such decisions.

Are you ready to abandon some archetypes or interactions you enjoyed?
Are you ready to give up powerlevel in deckbuilding?
In order to stay up-to-date with Standard? If yes, go ahead.
My answer was a decided NO, at least for a selected number of classes + neutrals.
While i keep scavenging even Standard cards from other classes.
Hmmm.

I would cry and then quit the game forever if I did that. For me, collecting and experimenting are way more fun than climbing the Standard ladder.
