Note: I likely got a couple things wrong but I dont think it will make a major impact overall
I was curious the maximum amount of dust a ftp grinder can accumulate per year assuming a few things, not playing any arena, but when given free arena runs go 0-3 every time, player dusts EVERY card. Although this is silly I want to prove no matter what cards you open eventually you can obtain a large collection. I also assume you get, on average, 60 gold quests, which tends to be the average if you reroll every quest with less gold than 60. I will be adding free packs and loot based on what was given in 2017. The player will also hit legend every season in order to maximize monthly loot, this makes a minute impact so its not super important. Lastly I assume packs are worth 100 dust, which on average they are and the sample size in a year is large enough to state with great confidence this number will hold up: First we must find the amount of packs one can buy in a year grinding 30 wins daily. 160x365/100=584. Now that we have that number we can add 52 packs from weekly brawls. 584+52=636. Now we must look at all the free loot given out throughout the year. I havent played actively every single month so I am not entirely sure about every event that happened this year. We got 18 free packs each expansion a free golden rare and a free legendary in 2. Thats 900 free dust and now 654 packs. The events so far this year, that I recall, are halloween which netted 4 packs and 2 additional packs from free arena runs. 654+6=660. We are getting three more packs for feast of winter veil, but one comes from our weekly tavern brawl. 660+2= 662. We were given three free arena runs for the frost festival. 662+3=665. I cant remember any other events that happened before this, any others you can put below. Lastly we must take into account monthly ladder loot. Legend loot results in 550 dust worth of cards. We can move on to our final calculations. 550x12=6600. 6600+900=7500 dust. 550x100=55000 55000+7500=62500. Thats a lot of dust! Thats over 39 legendary cards 156 epic cards 625 rares or 1562 common cards. If I made any errors let me know! Obviously this level of grinding is unreasonable but I just wanted to show just how much stuff you can get, and this is assuming you dust every card too! If your not dusting your collection can grow exponentially. Thanks for reading! I would love to know any thoughts surrounding this.
I am ftp player and started playing about a year ago. Not sure when but i know it was a some time before ungoro. I only crafted lich king and some common cards. I also got some dust when ragnaros went to hall of fame. By my calc. I spent around 3k of dust on crafting and i only have 3k of dust now. So i think you got the math wrong somwhere.
I have not dusted any cards other then that i had 3 or more. Not even a magma rager.
by spending gold on packs instead of arena, you should be able to get about 1 legendary per month if you do your dailies and grind some wins as well. by picking 1 or 2 decks that are strong in the meta you can get rank 5 every month if you put the time in, rank 10 is still decent since its about 170 dust as a reward, though the 500-600 from rank 5 will really help. i havent played my alt f2p account too much lately, havent had the time with full time job and school, but during un'goro and KFT i was able to get to rank 5 most months, wild is easier too and you can build some very good decks for cheap.
Knowing how to manage your dust correctly is a huge factor. try not to craft commons/rares unless they are wild cards or will significantly increase your winrate so you can grind gold through 3 wins/daily quests at a much faster rate. Hunter is a great class for building your collection, you don't need a single legendary and can often win games by turn 5-9 which means you can farm gold/dust quicker. If you have a new account, look up the unlisted quests that grant gold rewards and you can get a nice little boost to speed things up. a very basic mage is also decent for grinding since your burn spells are basic class cards and most of the cards you need are common/rare. Firelands portal is also a free card from the ONiK prologue so make sure to get it. Same with the free Deathknight from KFT solo adventure, you can also get some free packs from that as well. While the bosses might seem challenging, there are lots of lists on google/youtube (hearthpwn probably too but i haven't looked) about how to beat all bosses, including lich king with f2p decks
edit: obviously my response was not towards you, but to other f2p players who might be viewing this thread. Trump was/is(?) also doing a f2p run on his website with a youtube series which would be helpful for people who are just starting. Unlike a lot of f2p runs i have seen on stream, he isnt abusing his knowledge/skill to grind arena, but playing as most people who would be starting, though he is making better players than most players who are knew will make.
You would make it so much faster though if you got a job, and worked for some extra money to spend on cards. Even if its just every saturday or something. 30 wins per day takes really much time
