Ever since i played hearthstone a couple of years ago, i have always bought packs, but this expansion i decided to try out the free to play model and try to see the game from a free to play models prospective.
Personally i think hearthstone is NOT a free to play game, every expansion i have to spend at least 100 $ on packs, to get SOME of the legendary cards i want.
This time iam starting with 1500 gold which should buy me 15 packs, and that will be it.
Anyway, i will not buy packs anymore until they change the way crafting works in this game. 1600 dust for a legendary is absurd, especially when the disenchant cost is only 400 dust... 1/4 th the cost.
Nope, I pre-ordered. With a pre-order this time, you are guaranteed 3 legendaries at a minimum - free legendary weapon that everyone gets, guaranteed legendary in the first 10 packs, and then guaranteed legendary in the next 40 as part of the pity timer.

Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.
still I think u are pretty unlucky cuz i spent an average of 15/20 € every expansion and I always got the cards i wanted, disenchanting wild ones cuz i actually love the standard rotation mechanic
i havent bought packs after i saw MSOG jades/pirates and also that awful guac commercial. i am super hyped for this expansion though, and the last 2 have been decent
I really tried not to preorder, but I couldn't resist, even having 6700 gold accumulated from last two months. By my experience, even with that amount of gold you end up missing a lot of good cards, specially epics and legendaries.
Anyway, why do you have so little gold? Dont you complete your quests?
I've been playing F2P since karazhan, and I've been doing just fine, got a pretty big collection and I'm able to play multiple decks and get legend any season
Didn't preorder, I have enough gold for about 30 packs, and the dust for a couple legendaries. I'm hoping to get lucky, Haha!
About the dust though, I might be in the minority, but I feel like it's pretty generous tbh. Maybe it's because I played magic the gathering for a long time, but if I could have traded any 4 mythics for any mythic I wanted, we'll that'd be insane to me haha.
I guess I just look at it like, certain cards are just more valuable than others, but since in hearthstone they all have the same dust value, then it's a pretty good deal to trade in your crappy cards to obtain the good ones.

It doesn't work like that lol.. An examlpe: when koft was releases i bought 35 packs with gold and got 6 legendery (2 of them was golden)..didnt count free DK.. And my friend who bought 100 packs, he got only 1 legendary +free DK.... Its not guaranteed to get legendary in your 40 packs... Its like EVERY 40th pack contains legendary!! Not the same thing lol
An example: pack 1, pack 2..... Pack 10.. (Lets say that every 10th pack have legendary) you buy 7 packs and someone else buy 5 more packs (he will get legendary cause he bought that 10th pack) and if you buy another 3 packs ( it would be your 10th pack) but actually it isnt that 10th pack with legendary but it is pack number 15. That is how i see this...every single pack have its unique code... And every 40th pack contains legendary... You could be lucky and buy 3 packs and all of them is that 40th pack with legendary but what are the odds that you will hit them?? Billions of packs and milions of players...an avrage timer if 40 packs/one legendary.. It is not guaranteed tho!! But i agree , mostly you will get that one legendary in 40 packs but you can always get more legendaries or even none :) its all about luck in the end!
I’ve been f2p for a long time and always been able to build the majority of the meta decks. I decided to preorder this set because I believe there is a fair amount of good cards and I will be able to increase my dust for the next expansion.

The game is doable as a F2P, but it becomes tough if you aren't proactive with your gold.
What I mean is that you can save plenty of gold from one expansion to another, but if you aren't saving it upfront to spend on launch day, you're immediately behind and the game becomes a little less fun. So if you've been saving your gold to spend tomorrow (and you probably have 5-8k worth depending on how you play), you can hit the ground running and 'keep up' a bit. But if you weren't saving, you'll have to play catch-up which, in turn, puts you behind for the next expansion.
So it becomes a bit cyclical.
I paid $50 for Un'Goro (plus I had about 7k gold saved up) and immediately started saving up for the next expansion (KFT). This put me in position to save up for tomorrow and hopefully I get most of what I want.
Most important advice for F2P - track your pity counters! Make sure your final purchased pack for an expansion has a legendary.

You said you think it's NOT a free to play game. I'm afraid that is not a matter of opinion, it is free to play game. Might be hard to get cards or you won't be able to make all the decks you want, but you can play it completely free, and I'm sure literally millions of people are. Can even make very high Legend ranks with fairly cheap decks, and usually the best decks are often cheap ever since Face Hunter.
Also you said you wanted to see the game from a free to play models perspective, and it's a bit too late for that since you already spent a lot on game. Now it's VERY easy to not spend money anymore and keep up with new content only with gold, but for those that do not have any cards F2P might be nightmare. But if you already have decent collection (which from your post I understand you do), it will be as you bought cards. 4 months per expansion can easily buy over 100+ packs with gold only, 20 classic packs more from brawls, some arenas maybe, this expansion 9 free packs extra, free legendary... extremely easy to have almost all cards for free except crap legendaries and some crap epics that no one needs. Problem is when you are new and F2P from the start.
As for me won't buy packs (never did) cos gold is enough for everything one might ever need. I repeat myself from other post I made but 60 gold quest say 30 gold on wins and occasionally 80g quest makes about 100 gold a day on average, slightly bit less. Once per 4 month expansion that is:
120 new packs
9 new free packs
17.2 avg Classic packs on brawl
free legendary
2000+ dust on Rank 5+
For now it was enough for literally every existing deck from tier 1 to tier 4 and beyond, and didn't even need to dust any Wild cards. Enough for all commons, all rares, half epics (many of which you make by choice), almost half legendaries (keep the good ones you made, dust crap and make couple of choice).
A single dollar spent would be ******** in my opinion... or if someone likes to complete entire set or keep golden cards.
it’s both rude/disrespectful and ignorant to call people that spend money on this game “retarded.” If everyone was like you, we would not have hearthstone. Free to play players do not supply blizzard workers with a paycheck. No paycheck no work. No work no game. Check your attitude bruh.

I am. Started saving gold months ago. Have around 6800 in gold. Over 70 packs should do me pretty good.
me too. got 2500 gold, not much but reasonable

I'm free to play every expansion. Rent is expensive.
I never spend a cent in this game and have all must have legendarys and epics for the decks.
Money is only for who wants play with anything but play only a few hours for week.

Just play arena to grind , you will be allright.

I'm just not excited by any of the cards so I am too. Gonna try the togwaggle/ explore ungoro/ geist deck though.

Well that's how value of crafting/dusting works in every game, crafting a "card" is worth triple the amount of "dusting" it
Don't mind me just passing by
If there's an option to be a free to play, I will be free to play.
