Greetings everyone and welcome to this guide that serves the purpose of helping players understand the economics of Hearthstone.
Introduction There might be hundreds of things I've missed or misunderstood. Please let me know if you have something so we can update this guide. I will update this guide whenever needed. I know that most of these facts are very well known. Please bear with me. This is a complete guide written to help as many as possible and while some of you might know it all, others might not. This guide will not include temporary economical bonuses such as log-in rewards for Kobolds & Catacombs. Only the ones that are universally true. In this article I am writing a lot of 'make sure' but don't take it as a command. It's just a way of saying that it's the optimal economical way of going about Hearthstone but everyone is free to play the game however they want. Enjoy :)
- Seasonal Card Back from playing ranked: Make sure to climb to rank 20 in either Standard Ranked or Wild Ranked each month. If you begin the season at a rank that is better than rank 20, you will still need to win at least one game in ranked mode. Doing this will reward you with the seasonal card back.
- Ranked Chest Rewards: Make sure to climb as high a rank as possible in either Standard Ranked or Wild Ranked (or both) each month. Doing this will reward you with that month's best result. Be it Standard or Wild. You will only receive one reward at the end of the month even if you play both formats. Each rank climb gives you an additional 5 dust with the exceptions of rank 15, 10 and 5 that gives you additional economical bonuses. If you want the exact details, you can find them here:
Rank 20: 1 Golden common + 5 dust Rank 19: 1 Golden common + 10 dust Rank 18: 1 Golden common + 15 dust Rank 17: 1 Golden common + 20 dust Rank 16: 1 Golden common + 25 dust -- Rank 15: 1 Golden rare + 1 golden common + 5 dust Rank 14: 1 Golden rare + 1 golden common + 10 dust Rank 13: 1 Golden rare + 1 golden common + 15 dust Rank 12: 1 Golden rare + 1 golden common + 20 dust Rank 11: 1 Golden rare + 1 golden common + 25 dust -- Rank 10: 1 Golden rare + 2 golden commons + 5 dust Rank 9: 1 Golden rare + 2 golden commons + 10 dust Rank 8: 1 Golden rare + 2 golden commons + 15 dust Rank 7: 1 Golden rare + 2 golden commons + 20 dust Rank 6: 1 Golden rare + 2 golden commons + 25 dust -- Rank 5: 1 Golden epic + 2 golden commons + 5 dust Rank 4: 1 Golden epic + 2 golden commons + 10 dust Rank 3: 1 Golden epic + 2 golden commons + 15 dust Rank 2: 1 Golden epic + 2 golden commons + 20 dust Rank 1: 1 Golden epic + 2 golden commons + 25 dust -- Rank Legendary: No further rewards except for a one-time free card back. Otherwise the same as Rank 1.
- Tavern Brawl: Make sure to win at least one game of Tavern Brawl each week. The Tavern Brawl usually goes live on EU and US servers on Wednesdays and in ASIA on Thursdays. The Tavern Brawl is usually open for four-and-a-half day. Doing this will reward you with a free Classic pack.
- Heroic Tavern Brawl Do not play the Heroic Tavern Brawl that costs 1000 gold or 7.99 $ to enter because they are one of the worst bargains in the game. They are thrilling but the opposite of economical. This game mode will only be playable rarely and only when it replaces the Weekly Tavern Brawl but when it does, you should not be playing this mode no matter how skilled you are. It is possible to win more than you pay but it is not realistic for anyone to achieve because the pay-to-reward ratio is the worst in the game.
- Daily Quests: Make sure to complete your daily quests. Doing this will reward you with free gold. You can have up to three daily quests in your quest log so postponing to complete a quest can be fine as long as you don't postpone the quests for more than three days.
Do not complete 40 gold quests. You have the option to re-roll any quest once per day and if you simply choose to not complete and re-roll all the 40 gold quests you can get lucky and 'upgrade' them to higher value than 40. You are not doing this because you don’t want the 40 gold; it is because you would rather have more. That is called opportunity cost. Doing this will make it possible to average higher than 50 gold/day.
- Winning games vs. players: Make sure to win as many games each day against other players. Doing this will reward you with free gold. Every third win gives you 10 gold. The limit for daily income is 100 gold.
-Double up on your 80 gold quests Make sure to trade your 80 gold quests with other players’ 80 gold quests. Doing this will reward you with an additional 80 gold. One way of doing that is by visiting www.hearthpwn.com and find the thread named ‘80g Quest Trading - Play A Friend!’. You can find a link to the most recent thread here:
- Friend List: Make sure to have as large a friend list as possible. Doing this will reward you with the chance of increased amount of free 80 gold challenges from friends. One way of getting a large friend list is by treating your opponents nicely, friend request them after the game and be a pleasent and polite person. Your friend list can have up to 200 players.
- Welcome Bundle: If you are ever going to spend actual money on the game, make sure to purchase the Welcome Bundle because that is the best bargain in the game.
- Preorders: If you are ever going to spend actual money on the game, make sure to spend money on pre-orders because they are better bargains than normal purchases.
- Pity Timer: Make sure you do not stop opening packs until you have opened a legendary from any given set. The pity timer is 40 packs from the same expansion and it is there to help us to open legendaries more frequently. The average number of packs it takes to open a legendary is 20 but if you are unlucky, you will guarenteed get one after 40 packs. Therefore the best economical decision is to stop opening packs as soon as you have reset the pity timer because otherwise you're already on the move for the next legendary in the set.
- Legendary in the first 10 packs: If you have not opened a pack from a new expansion yet then make sure to open packs from that expansion until you open a legendary. You are guarenteed to open a legendary in the first 10 packs each new expansion. This is also true for old expansions if you have never opened a pack from that expansion. Therefore if you are a new player you should go back and buy packs from old sets. However you do not have to buy 10 from each one. Buy one pack at a time until you open a legendary and then stop.
- Amazon Coins: Make sure to always purchase Amazon Coins before purchasing card packs in the Shop. Doing this will reward you with up to 25 % discount on all Hearthstone pack purchasing if you are playing Hearthstone on either PC, Android, iPhone or iPads and if you are a customer in either US, UK, DE, JP, FR, IT or ES. For more info, go here: http://www.hearthpwn.com/coins and here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0096E8EC2.
- Wings
Make sure to always purchase the first wing (700 gold or real money) of an adventure whenever possible. Doing this will reward you with permanent access to purchasing the remaining wings of that adventure. Otherwise you risk the adventure leaving the shop. Hearthstone’s adventures are in order: Curse of Naxxramas, Blackrock Mountain, The League of Explorers and One Night in Karazhan.
- Don't double-craft: Make sure to never disenchant cards you want to craft later. Doing this will be extremely expensive. The same is true the other way around: Don't double-disenchant. An example: It can be a bad idea to craft common and rare cards because there are much more likely to open which will leave you in a situation where you will want to dust them again.
- Hall of Fame/Nerfing: Never disenchant a card that you think could potentially get nerfed or moved to Hall of Fame. Cards that get nerfed will give you an increased amount of dust to disenchant which means you should have as many of them in your collection as possible to disenchant at that point. In other words: Don't press the mass disenchant button called "Disenchant Extra Cards"!
- Golden legendaries: If you are ever going to craft a golden legendary, make sure you craft it before you open your first pack of any given set. Hearthstone has a no-legendary-duplicate rule which means you cannot open a legendary you already own so if you want a golden version of a legendary, you should always craft it before you open it. If you forget and you open a legendary before you craft it in golden you are left with a situation where you have to disenchant the normal legendary and you have lost the dust difference between a normal legendary and a golden legendary (1600 dust)
- Playing arena is on average a better economical decision than opening packs that you've purchases for 100 gold each. If you have the patience to not buy packs as soon as a new set is being released, then playing Arena will be better economically. Arena will reward you with packs from the newest expansion so if you want Un’Goro packs, Arena is not for you.
Warning: Arena rewards are better on average but if you are a new player it is not adviced to play this mode yet because Arena rewards are based on how many opponents you beat before losing thrice.
Some people find Arena easier to play if they use supplement programs such as Hearth Arena. Link can be found here: http://www.heartharena.com/
Dungeon Runs - Do not play Dungeon Runs. They are fun but the opposite of economical. They are technically free but factoring in the opportunity cost makes them expensive. You do not need any gold to ender a Dungeon Run but because there is no reward at the end of the Dungeon Run, you are left better off playing against other players. Playing against other players rewards you with 10 gold/3 wins. Dungeon Runs do not.
-One of Everything: Collect every card in the Classic Set. Only one of each card is required, and may be golden or non-golden. This will reward you with 100 free gold.
- Recruits! Recruiting friends to play Hearthstone will give you bonus Classic Packs for each one of them that keeps on playing until they have 20 levels combined from all 9 classes. The limit for Recruit is 5 friends and the first recruit will give you the Shaman hero Morgl instead of a Classic pack.
- Tablets and Phones: The following tablets and phones will reward you with 1 Classic pack for playing a game on them: iPad, iPhone, any Android tablet, any Android phon or Samsung Galaxy S6.
It is possible to hack the system and make your PC believe it is any of the given tablets or phones.
My Personal preferences (These are not facts but only my opinions). You make take this as advice or ignore it.
- Set your own goals. Make up your mind what you want from this game (do you want to play competitive or just for fun?), how much time you want to spend on it, how much money you want to spend on it (this is a good advice for everything in life actually. Work out a budget and stick to it) and make up your mind if you want to play Wild or not. If you are a person who knows that you will never play Wild, then you can easily disenchant most Wild cards. However you should make this decision carefully because it is extremely expensive to craft cards you have already disenchanted. Also some Tavern Brawls gives you the opportunity to play with Wild cards so if you do not own the ones you want to play with in the Tavern Brawl that week, you are going to regret disenchanting them.
Good stuff, but one minor detail: as a US player it seems like Tavern Brawls usually become available on Wednesday... can anyone confirm one way or the other?
Today in my free brawl pack I got Barongeddon, then I had a cup of fresh green tea. As a result of that, I think Priest is OP because my keyboard is not a mechanical one. I hope Blizzard will address this issue.

Could I made give you homework and assign you with the job of testing this week and next week? :) The more precise you can be (exact hours) the better.
does this mean my GF doesn't actually need to hit 20 in ranked, but level the combined heroes to level 20 to get me my morgl skin?
Unless something has changed then all your GF has to do is to play Hearthstone until she has 20 levels combined over all classes. Nothing can prevent her from leveling up if she keeps playing so you should be in the clear with Morgl. Just have patience :) This means she can continue to play the Mage class until she is level 20 or play two classes until they are level 10 each.
It is not about ranked play. Rank 20 is a measurement of your skills, luck and collection while level 20 is a measurement or how much you’ve been playing.
However I will encourage her to reach rank 20 each month which should be easy even for a new player. Hitting rank 15 will be even more profitable because that is where she will get a golden rare at the start of each month.
One-Time bonuses -One of Everything: Collect every card in the Classic Set. Only one of each card is required, and may be golden or non-golden. This will reward you with 100 free gold.
I had no idea about this one. There are two cards from the classic set that can't be crafted in their golden versions so you might want to add that one up under the golden legendary crafting(Elite Tauren Chieftain and Gelbin Mekkatorque) just in case we got any collectivists.
Another one that I forgot is that winning a game with every class in Practice(expert mode) against the Innkeeper grants 100 gold, something not mentioned in the post right above me.
Never disenchant a card unless it will never see play in either Standard nor Wild or until it has been Wild-only legal for a least a year. In this way you will never accidentally disenchant a card you might want back.
I know that there are lots of cards which will very likely never find their way into any serious deck, but technically you cannot know if a given card will ever be useful, especially if you take Wild into consideration as well. I'm not even sure if there is a single card that has dramatically increased in popularity after being rotated out, but this sort of estimation cannot be done. Also, whatever "sees play" is partially up to the player. I'm sure most players would not bother to play Mill Rogue in Wild, but for those who think it's fun, you might find some use for cards like King Mukla or Nat, the Darkfisher.
I think this advice only works on premises such as "only play Standard" and "don't play weird decks". If you focus on Standard you can definitely say which cards you want to keep and make a solid prediction on which you will never use and when a card rotates out, it won't matter to you anymore. If you don't want to exclude Wild completely, you should advise players to make up their mind whether they want to play Wild, Standard or both and then act accordingly.
I don't mean to talk down to you. I apologize if it sounds that way. I just think these sort of things should be discussed briefly in your introduction.

thanks. I bought her the welcome pack and she got 3 legendaries from it, was amazed. (ala'kir, alexstraza and prophet velen) I dusted the windlord to get her some current cards though. (bonesmares, scalebanes and chaingangs) I should be able to make a half decent mage deck with what she has right now.

Oh don’t worry about it. You are not coming off as aggressive or hurtful. I see this as a collective effort to make Hearthstone easier for everyone so I thank you very much for the feedback.
The quoted part is merely my personal preferences. We could totally delete them because they are not generic facts for everyone. I feel like I personally have become quite good at evaluating cards but I make mistakes too!
Do you feel like I should delete the personal preferences so we keep the article clean and true?
You can add the link of the getting free packs with devices which is obtainable also emulators. I believe there is a topic about it in this site.
Also you can add the additional collectibles via the other Blizzard games, such as HoTS(Heroes of the Storm) card back.
Also with all new expansions 1 legendary is guaranteed in first 10 packs. So You can add a sentence below Pity Timer as "Make sure you have opened at least 10 packs with new expansions." and If i remember correct pity timer is about 30 decks. The actual count could be helpful for players who doesn't know the real count.
We have discussed about opportunity costs under a dungeon thread. I thought firstly the thread is about that. You should add a new title as "my suggestions" and tell about that a little for new players. It can help most of people who can't decide which mode they should play. Also for the players who wants a long run might want to know which mode fits their style perfect. it can be answer for questions like "which packs should i buy with gold firstly" or which cards should i d/e first to obtain more dusts.
For instance I recommend people d/e extra copies of golden cards if they have non-golden ones. It is one of the best way to colletc some extra dust for me.
or another example; My personal preference is always buying the oldest packs because I'm mostly playing wild and If i can't collect most of the cards from the packs, they will leave standard and I will have to craft them with dust. That is such a thing that i don't want because keeping dusts will be good for newer expansions.
Players should set their gaming economics according to their desires and according to the way how they are playing the game. So you can motive them in this thread. Motiving people to set their economics fits this thread properly.
Memedeck-seeker. Always tries to build new decks. Hates tournements, streamers, netdecks and poor-o players. ah, but a tournement mode could be great !!!
Arena - Playing arena is on average a better economical decision than opening packs that you've purchases for 100 gold each. If you have the patience to not buy packs as soon as a new set is being released, then playing Arena will be better economically.
While I understand that the Arena is a good way to build your collection, it isnt for brand new players just starting out. To break even you have to win 2 or 3 games. Someone with less than a month of playing likely has little game play knowledge, knowledge of addon's, or the cards themselves. They are likely to be 3 and out players and waste more than they gain. Sadly the newest players are the ones likely to search and find this post. You might want to modify this just a little to encourage learning the game before jumping into the Arena.
You might also add playing a game on an Android phone will give you a free pack.
Greetings everyone and welcome to this guide that serves the purpose of helping players understand the economics of Hearthstone.

Nice post tho, hopefully they pin it
Nice
Good stuff, but one minor detail: as a US player it seems like Tavern Brawls usually become available on Wednesday... can anyone confirm one way or the other?
#gNOmeferatu
nice list, thanks.
does this mean my GF doesn't actually need to hit 20 in ranked, but level the combined heroes to level 20 to get me my morgl skin?
Thank you! I would have loved to have this when I started.
you should also list the hidden challenges (like getting 1000 ranked wins) in the one-time rewards section, as you get gold/packs for those...

Quit complaining and just have fun with this game!
So you thought only Mage had an exodia combo eh
Hey the tavern brawl starts on Wednesday
I exist, I think.
Just one thing I want to criticise:
Great list for new and returning players. Well done OP!
Nice thread! :)
Memedeck-seeker. Always tries to build new decks. Hates tournements, streamers, netdecks and poor-o players.
ah, but a tournement mode could be great !!!
If you are in your first year of playing please read this post.
Dust does not burn a hole in the jar. Be careful what you craft, especially before and right after a rotation.
